A

The West is full of fast food and large amounts of food which contribute to many women's being fat. While many are fat, thin women are admired and seen as healthier. This has led to a culture of gym-going, strange die?ting methods and, frequently, eating disorders. In the East, women tend to be smaller and many women take pills to keep their slim figures as they get older. However, you're mistaken if you think thinness is the beauty stand?ard all over the world. The BBC reports that in Mauritania, Africa, the op?posite is true.

In Mauritania, mothers force their daughters to eat a lot of food so that they get as fat as possible. The fatter they are, the more likely they are to marry well. Fat is also considered healthy, because in a country where HIV/AIDS is a very real problem, thin people are often sick and dying. However, "healthy" fat women are suffering from some problems of their own and many are dying in their 40s of weight-related diseases.

The Mauritanian government is trying to warn its people of the dangers of being overweight but it's not easy to change cultural views. Many women worry that if they lose weight, their husbands will leave them for fatter, more attractive women.

It seems that while education about the dangers of being too thin and too fat is very important, what the world really needs is to become less pre?occupied with the size, shape and weight of women's bodies. The promotion of healthy practices is easy but changing cultural beauty standards takes more time, imagination and effort.

It's really true what people say about English politeness: it's every?where. When squeezing (擠)past someone in a narrow aisle (通道),people say "sorry". When getting off a bus, English passengers say "thank you" rather than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things.

After all, squeezing past others sometimes can't be avoided and the bus driver is merely doing his job. I used to think the same way, without ques?tioning it, until I started travelling to the British Isles and came to appreci?ate some more polite ways of communicating with people.

People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customers and retail assistants in most ca?ses thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be exceptional to hear more than one "thank you" in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, as opposed to Germans, who would normal?ly think that paying their workers money is already enough.

Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers stressed several times but none, of their explanations were intended as criticism. It has been my impression that by avoiding criti?cism, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is shown in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat women to meals than German men. However, I do need to point out here that this applies to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men. Yes, the latter are a bit tight-fisted.

8.  What is the author's attitude towards English politeness?

A. He appreciates it.           B. He gives no personal opinion.

C.  He thinks it is just an act.   D. He thinks it goes too far.

9.  What can we learn about customers and retail assistants in Germany?

  A.  It's always retail assistants who say thank you.

B.  Customers never say thank you to retail assistants.

C.  They always say thank you to each other.

D.  They may say thank you only once.

 10.  We can learn from the last paragraph that Scottish men___ .

 A.  are more likely to be involved in a fight !

 B.  are not so willing to spend money for women

C.  are more polite than English men

D.  treat women in a polite way

11.     The author develops the text through the method of____ .

A. giving comments              B. telling stories

C. making comparisons           D. giving reasons

In April 2014, the world's oldest known message in a bottle was dis?covered floating in the Baltic Sea. It had spent 101 years lost in the ocean! The message was finally sent to the author's granddaughter.

A German fisherman named Konrad Fischer found the brown boltle near Kiel* Germany. He said he nearly threw the bottle back into the water after pulling it out of a fishing net. Then he noticed something inside.

The bottle in good condition contained a Danish postcard with two Ger?man stamps, dated May 17, 1913. Although dampness had made most of the writing illegible(字跡模糊的),the readable part of the message asked whoever found it to return it to an address in Berlin. It even contained two stamps lo pay for postage.

From the address, researchers found that the postcard was written by a man named Richard Platz, who was 20 years old when he wrote the mes?sage. While he was hiking on the Baltic coast with a nature appreciation group, he threw the bottle into the sea. Then the researchers began a re?search for any living relatives of his. Sure enough, they were able to find his 62-year-old granddaughter, Angela Erdmann, who still lives in Berlin.

"It was almost unbelievable*" Erdmann said upon being presented with her grandfather's bottle and message. "That was a pretty moving moment. Tears rolled down my face."

Erdmann never knew her grandfather, who died in 1946, but says that the discovery of the bottle has made her want to learn more about him.

The bottle remained on display at the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg until May 1.
