Watching a child struggle to breathe during an asthma(哮喘) attack is frightening for any parent.So it is only natural that most moms and dads will try just about anything-including spending a lot of money-to keep an attack at (41)H.Trouble is,more than half of parents are trying strategies that simply don't work and wasting hundreds of dollars in the(42)E.
According to Dr.Michael Cabana,a pediatrician at the University of Michigan's C.S.Mott Children's Hospital,who led the study,one of the most(43)Bmistakes was to buy a mattress cover to protect against dust mites(塵螨)for a child whose asthma instead was made even worse by plant pollen.Many of those parents then (44)Jto do what would have helped a lot more:shut the windows to keep pollen out.Another was using a humidifier for a child who was allergic(過敏)to dust mites; a humidifier(45)Gto be a place where dust mites like to (46)A.With those allergies,a dehumidifier works better.
Worst of all was the number of smokers with asthmatic children who didn't even try to quit or at least(47)C themselves to smoking outdoors rather than just moving to another room or the garage.Many smoking parents(48)Fexpensive air filters that have what Cabana called"questionable utility."
Part of the problem,Dr.Cabana and his colleagues believe,is that parents are bombarded by television ads that encourage them to buy products such as air and carpet fresheners,ionizers and other remedies that are often expensive but medically (49)I.And doctors may not always take the time,or have the time,to explain to parents what will and won't work in their child's particular case.

42.E.in the process,在過程中.
43.B.common,尋常的,平常的.由下一句中的Many of those parents,可知許多夫婦都這樣做,可推出這是一個常見的錯誤.common mistakes,故選B.
44.J. 因此what would have helped a lot more,這些有幫助的事情,家長們是忽略去做的,neglect to do,忘記做某事.
46.A.breed繁殖.由a humidifier tend to be a place where dust mites like to,可知加濕器變成了螨蟲喜愛怎樣的地方,結(jié)合各選項意思可知選A.
47.C.limit限制.由smoking outdoors rather than just moving to another room or the garage,可知作者希望患有哮喘的吸煙者在室外而不是換個屋子吸煙.
48.F.purchase,花費.
49.I.unnecessary不需要的. 故選I.

10.A conflict at work is common.If you can avoid conflict,it means you will win what you want regardless of what the other person wants.Since the potential issue has not been removed,it will simply reappear later.Here are the necessary suggestions to effectively get rid of conflicts at work.
★Be aware of the fact that some conflicts are unavoidable at work.On numerous occasions,conflict and disagreement are likely to happen.But when a conflict happens it's not the end of the world.On the contrary,it can be the beginning of an interesting learning process.Conflicts mean that people care enough to disagree strongly.The trick is not to allow the conflict to go on forever.
★Deal with conflicts sooner rather than later.Solve a conflict when it starts,as it only gets worse with time going by.Conflicts at work arise not from something that was said,but from something that wasn't said!Everyone's waiting for the other to admit he's wrong and gets more unpleasant after the conflict has lasted a while.It's essential to interrupt the"waiting game"before it gets to that point.
★Ask nicely.If somebody has done something that made you angry,or if you don't understand their viewpoint or actions,simply asking nicely about it can make a world of difference.Never assume that people do what they do to annoy or hurt you.Sometimes there's a good reason why that person does what he or she does,and a potential conflict disappear right there.Do remember to make an inquiry,not an accusation of any sort.
★Appreciate.Praise the other part in the conflict.Tell them why it's worth it to you to solve the conflict.This can be difficult as few people find it easy to praise and appreciate a person they disagree strongly with,but it's a great way to move forward.

16.The world would have been so much better if we all knew to say and do the right thing at the right time.However,that is not the case,especially when it comes to instilling (逐步培養(yǎng)) proper behavior in kids.Behavior modification(BM) techniques were recently created to help in instilling proper behavior in children as well as adults.
Behavior modification refers to establishing appropriate behaviors in individuals and discouraging those that are not desirable.The techniques are used in behavior modification therapy that aims to correct and instill appropriate behavior in children.
The most commonly used behavior modification techniques are positive reinforcement,negative reinforcement and punishment.Positive reinforcement refers to reinforcing a desired behavior through the process of rewarding it.Negative reinforcement behavioral strategies are based on the removal of a negative consequence or a behavior because the desired behavior was performed.Punishment refers to subjecting(使服從于) an individual to a negative condition because of an inappropriate behavior.
The behavior modification techniques for children are mostly based on positive and negative reinforcement.However,parents should realize that these techniques can't be relied upon totally for child behavior modification.This can be done through effective communication and greater focus on the parent-child relationship.As a parent,don't make the reward a monetary one.Try to make it look more like a privilege than a reward.
Although we talk so much about the role of a parent in bringing positive behavior modification in children,both parents and teachers have equally important roles to play.Teachers play their role through preventive classroom management,teaching social problem-solving skills like alternative thinking,and continuous monitoring of a child's behavior.It is true that there are various behavior modification techniques available for encouraging proper behavior in children.However,there is nothing that can take the place of proper parenting and an affectionate environment.

Title:(71)Behavior modification techniques
I.Introduce to BM
•Definition of BM:Establishing appropriate behaviors and (72)discouraging undesirable ones
•Purpose of BM techniques:To correct and (73)instill appropriate behavior in children as well as adults.
II.Common BM techniques
•(74)Positive reinforcement:Reinforcing a desired behavior by (75)rewarding it
•Negative reinforcement:(76)Removing a negative consequence or a behavior
•(77)Punishment:Subjecting an individual to (78)a negative condition
III.BM techniques for children
For parents:
•Communicating effectively with children
•(79)Making the reward a privilege
•Sticking to the same technique
For teachers:
•Preventing problems happening in classroom
•Teaching (80)how to solve social problem
•Monitoring children's behaviors continuously.

3.New Job,Same Company:Learning the Ropes
Starting a new job means learning the ropes at an unfamiliar place, but it can be harder for those faced with a new position within the same company. It's happening more these days as companies downsize.Whether you are moving from one job in your own department to another or suddenly answering to a new boss, you need to take steps to avoid the difficulties of office politics and work overload.
•Learn the new rules. Just because you are still in the same company, doesn't mean you will be playing by the same rules.Take the time to learn how things operate in your new work situation.Do not say"It's easy to think,I know the company, and I've been here for 20 years."It's really important not to think that it's the same.
•Talk it out. When moving from one job to another, you are likely to have twice the work. You might be eager to start the new job,but who will take over your old role? What are your new job responsibilities?Besides,if you're asked to take on work in addition to what you do now,ask what you should do first and find out who you will report to for the new responsibilities.
•Stay open.Reorganization usually leads to worry among employees, whether it's a favorite co-worker whose place you'll be taking or former peers who now report to you. You'll be bringing whatever old baggage you have and dealing with the worries of new colleagues.Don't be surprised by push-back from co-workers who may see your new role as a danger to them.Be open with your colleagues about your role and how it fits into the group.
•Keep relationships. While you may have a new set of colleagues, keeping relationships with old co-workers and managers is important, particularly in such a difficult work environment. But stop by to invite a former boss to coffee. You might some day go back to work with them.
1.Who is the passage written for? Those faced with anew position within the same company.
2.How much work are you likely to have when moving from one job to another?Twice the work.
3.What does reorganization usually lead to?Worry among employees.
4.Why is it important to keep relationships with your old colleagues?Because you might some day go back to work with them..
