Why People Get Tattoos
Jack lay, quiet and unmoving for thirty minutes while a stranger repeatedly stabbed (刺) him with sharp needles, causing blood to pour steadily out of his leg. Jack was getting a tattoo. His friend Tony had recently gotten a tattoo, and Jack was so impressed by it that he decided to get one too. Peer pressure, media influence, and personal expression are some of the common reasons for wearing tattoos today.
The desire to be accepted by one’s friends or peers can have a great influence on what a person does. Sometimes, wearing a tattoo can be a sign that you belong to a certain group. Gangs often use special clothes and tattoos to identify their particular group. Some of these groups wear only brand – name clothes. Others wear tattoos. When a person’s friends are all doing something, that person is more likely to do the same thing.
The media is another big influence behind the popularity of tattoos in North America. A wide variety of media images(人物,圖像) show tattoos-people appearing in commercials selling expensive cars, famous sports heroes with tattoos in magazines, fashion models wearing designer clothes that show their bodies tattooed with detailed and colourful patterns. These media images link tattoos to ideas of wealth, success, and status. As a result, many people decide to get a tattoo for its fashion and status value.
Many people decide to wear tattoos in order to express their artistic nature, their beliefs, or their feelings-in other words, to show their individuality(個性). A musician in a rock band may get a tattoo of a guitar on the arm. Some environmentalists may tattoo pictures of endangered animals on their shoulders. A tattoo can be a public sign to show what is important in a person's life.
As you can see, there are many reasons why young North Americans get tattoos. A tattoo can be part of a group's uniform, a sign of fashion or an expression of individuality. The decision to get a tattoo is most often a result of the influence of friends or media or the desire to express oneself. For Jack, it was a mixture of all three.

Muhammad Yunus and the bank he founded are honored for their work to help the word’s poor. Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank he founded were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. They won the award for their efforts to help bring millions of people, especially women, out of poverty.
“Every single individual on earth has both the potential and the right to live a decent life. Across cultures and civilizations, Yunus and Grameen Bank have shown that even the poorest of the poor can work to bring about their own development,” the Nobel Committee said in its citation.
The Peace Prize is one of the biggest honors in the world. Yunus is the first Nobel Prize winner from Bangladesh, a nation of about 141 million people. In 1983, Yunus and the Grameen Bank started a now worldwide system that lets people borrow small amounts of money to start business. Through these loans, called “micro-credit”, the world’s poor have been able to buy much needed to run an egg business, or a cell phone in places where there is on other access to a phone.
Yunus said he would use part of the $1.4 million award money to create a company that will make low-cost, high-nutrition food for the poor. The rest of his share will go toward setting up an eye hospital for the poor in Bangladesh. ”I’m so, so happy, it’s really great news for the whole nation,” Yunus said after hearing of his win.
Since the bank began, it has lent $5.72 billion to more than 6 million Bangladeshis. About 97% of the borrowers are women.

A.Because they helped the rich become richer.
B.Because they helped children to finish their education.

Rescue workers at the San Jose gold and copper mine in northern Chile had reason to sing this week.A small hole drilled into the earth became a passage(通道) to freedom for thirty-three trapped miners. They spent sixty-nine days underground."Never have people been trapped for so long so deeply," says a doctor at NASA, the American space agency, which helped in the rescue.
But the chief medical officer for the miners said most are in good enough health to leave the hospital within a day or so.The first three were released from the hospital Thursday night.
For much of the day the miners relaxed with Chilean President Sebastian Pinera. The thirty-two Chileans and one Bolivian still wore special sunglasses to protect their eyes.
A partial mine collapse(坍塌) on 5th of August trapped them more than half a kilometer underground. They had to stretch a two-day food supply. For two weeks no one knew if they were alive or dead.
Later, they received supplies(供給) and a video link lowered through drill holes. That link was how Ariel Ticona watched his wife give birth to their daughter.
The miners have apparently agreed to share the money they earn from selling their story.
They have already received gifts of money and travel offers.Edison Pena has been invited to the New York City Marathon and to Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley in Memphis, Tennessee.Mr.Pena described how he ran in the mine tunnels to ease the stress. And he led the miners in singing Elvis songs.

The last miner up was Luis Urzua. He was the shift leader when his crew became trapped.
Rescuers used a metal cage to pull the miners to safety in less than twenty-four hours -- faster than expected. The rescue capsule was a half-meter wide and known as the Phoenix.

Global Positioning Systems are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellite-based systems provide turn-by-turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.
We spoke to Mr. Brown by Skype. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS-equipped car to use during his stay. Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasn’t until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of 'garbage in garbage out'.”
Mister Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment. Barry Brown: “One problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it’s going to the wrong place.”
Barry Brown formerly served as a professor with the University of California, San Diego. While there, he worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in people’s cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS.” It lists several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues related to when GPS commands are given.
Barry Brown says to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.
1.In Paragraph 2, Mr. Brown mentioned his friend in the conversation to _____________.
A.build up his own reputation
B.laugh at his stupid friend
C.prove the GPS system is only garbage
D.describe an example of human error
2.With which of the following statement would Barry Brown most likely agree?
A.GPS units are to blame for the most GPS service failures.
B.We should introduce higher standard for the driving license.
C.Cameras are urgently needed to help improve GPS systems.
D.Drivers, GPS systems and passengers should unite to improve GPS systems.
3.What is Mr. Brown’s attitude towards GPS?
A.Unconcerned B.Prejudiced C.Objective D.Critical
4.What would be the best title for the text?
A.driving with GPS can be difficult
B.driving confusions can be caused by small screen
C.driving without GPS should be much more convenient
D.GPS equipment in driving: to be deserted or improved?
