Art is considered by many people to be little more than an ordinary means of giving pleasure. This is not always the case; however at times, art may be seen to have a medical side as well. Such could be said of the sandpaintings of the Navaho Indians of the American Southwest; they have a medical as well as an artistic purpose.

According to the Navaho traditions(傳統(tǒng)), one who suffers from either a mental or a physical illness has in some way disturbed (干擾) or something to do with the supernatural perhaps a certain animal, a ghost (幽靈), or the dead. To get rid of this bad connection, the sick person or one of his relatives will ask a medicine man called a “singer ” to perform a treating ceremony(儀式) which will attract a powerful supernatural being. During the ceremony, which may last from 2 to 9 days, the “singer” will produce a sandpainting on the floor of the Navaho house. On the last day of the ceremony, the patient will sit on this sandpainting and the “singer” will rub (揉擦) the sick parts of the patient's body with sand from a certain figure in the sandpainting. In this way the patient absorbs (吸收) the power of that particular supernatural being and becomes strong like it. After the ceremony, the sandpainting is then destroyed so its power will not harm anyone.

The art of sandpainting is handed down from old “singers” to their students. The materials used are easily found in the areas of the Navaho area; brown, red, yellow, and white sandstone, which is made by being crushed (壓碎) between two stones much as corn is ground (磨碎) into flour. The “singer” holds a small amount of this sand in his hand and lets it flow between his thumb and forefinger onto a clean, flat surface on the floor. With a steady hand and great patience, he is thus able to create (創(chuàng)造) designs of some people, snakes and other creatures that have power in the Navaho allow reproduction of sandpaintings, since he believes the supernatural powers that taught him the art have forbidden this ; however, such reproductions can in fact be bought today in tourist shops in Arizona and New Mexico. These are done by either the Navaho Indians or by other people who wish to keep this art.

A fad diet is a diet that suddenly becomes popular, usually because it promises people that they will lose a lot of weight overnight. Although dieters may really show weight loss from a fad diet, they will almost certainly get back the weight if their usual eating habits (習(xí)慣) remain unchanged. Moreover, fad diets continuously call for special products of questionable value or for “health foods” that may cost twice as much as supermarket(超市) foods. Worse yet, certain fad diets don't include nutrients(營(yíng)養(yǎng))good for health. People have been known to become very ill as a result of following medically unhealthy diets.

How far would you be willing to go to satisfy your need to know? Far enough to find out your possibility of dying from a terrible disease? These days that’s more than an academic question, as Tracy Smith reports in our Cover Story.
There are now more than a thousand genetic tests, for everything from baldness to breast cancer, and the list is growing. Question is, do you really want to know what might eventually kill you? For instance, Nobel Prize-winning scientist James Watson, one of the first people to map their entire genetic makeup, is said to have asked not to be told if he were at a higher risk for Alzheimer’(老年癡呆癥).
“If I tell you that you have an increased risk of getting a terrible disease, that could weigh on your mind and make you anxious, through which you see the rest of your life as you wait for that disease to hit you. It could really mess you up.” Said Dr. Robert Green, a Harvard geneticist.
“Every ache and pain,” Smith suggested, “could be understood as the beginning of the end.” “That ’s right. If you ever worried you were at risk for Alzheimer’s disease, then every time you can’t find your car in the parking lot, you think the disease has started.”
Dr. Green has been thinking about this issue for years. He led a study of people who wanted to know if they were at a higher genetic risk for Alzheimer’s. It was thought that people who got bad news would, for lack of a better medical term, freak out. But Green and his team found that there was “no significant difference” between how people handled good news and possibly the worst news of their lives. In fact, most people think they can handle it. People who ask for the information usually can handle the information, good or bad, said Green.
【小題1】Which of the following is true about James Watson?

A.He doesn’t want to know his chance of getting a disease.
B.He is strongly in favor of the present genetic tests.
C.He believes genetic mapping can help cure any disease.
D.He is more likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease.
【小題2】The first paragraph is meant to__________.
A.a(chǎn)sk some questionsB.satisfy readers’ curiosity
C.introduce the topicD.describe an academic fact
【小題3】According to Paragraphs 3 and 4, if a person is at a higher genetic risk, it is__________.
A.necessary to remove his anxietyB.impossible to hide his disease
C.better to inform him immediatelyD.a(chǎn)dvisable not to let him know
【小題4】The underlined part “freak out” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to“_________”.
A.leave offB.break downC.drop outD.turn away
【小題5】The study led by Dr. Green indicates that people__________.
A.can accept some bad newsB.tend to find out the truth
C.prefer to hear good newsD.have the right to be informed
