I will never forget the lesson about my window. Four years ago, I moved to a house in a large town. One of my new neighbors’ house was only a few feet away from mine. There lived a woman. Through one of my windows, I could see her reading by her window every afternoon.
Several months later, I found I couldn’t see the woman clearly. I thought her window was too dirty. I said to myself, “Why doesn’t she clean her window? It looks terrible!”
One afternoon, I decided to clean my house including the window. I felt tired after three hours of hard work. So I sat down by the window for a rest. What a surprise! I could see the woman reading there clearly again! By that time, I realized that my own window was too dirty, not hers! I really felt ashamed for myself. I had been watching her through my dirty window in the past days!
The experience is very important for me. So I try to clean the window of my heart before judging others

It was a cold winter morning. Half asleep at the train station, I stared into the distance,   31   for the train to take me to my   32   in Boston. The world was quiet. The very few people on the street kept to themselves,   33   their steaming cups of coffee.

Reaching into my pocket as the   34   was approaching, my numb hand searched for the $ 20 bill to pay my fare. The pocket was   35  ! I searched through my bag and then I felt   36  . Unless the money dropped from the sky, I’d be   37   there.

“What’s the matter?” A short, elderly man stood before me.

“Oh, nothing…Well, I   38   my money and now I can’t pay for the ticket. I’m going to   39   my math class and the train is leaving.”

“Here, use this.”

The man held a $ 20 bill. I looked up,   40  . People just didn’t do that any more. Everyone worried about their own   41  , rarely stopping to think about others, especially teenage strangers.

“Thank you, but no, I can’t.”

42   it—go!” The man pushed me   43   the train. I bought a round-trip ticket, and he refused the change I   44   to give him back. I did not know what to say — a million thoughts raced through my mind, yet I stood   45  .

For the train ride I was silent. I began to see the world through   46   eyes. That man made a difference with such a simple   47  .

A week later I was at the train station again, with an extra $20   48   I saw the man. And there he was.

“Excuse me, sir, I believe I owe you this.” I   49   the money into his hand.

Failing to refuse, he said, “Just remember to do the same for someone in your shoes some day.” I smiled,   50  .

The elderly man is my hero. For many, heroes are famous, but my hero is a giving stranger who taught me a lesson in life. I will never forget his kindness.

It was a hot summer day. My dad and I were getting ready to go out for a ride on the boat with my friend Katie and the dog when the phone call came, the call that made that bright, beautiful day a cold, dark, gloomy one.
I had just put on my suit, shorts, and tank top, and packed my bag with sunscreen and everything else I would need for the day. I ran into my parents’ room to find Dad. When I saw him on the phone, he was crying. I’d never seen my dad cry before. My heart sank. What possibly could have happened?
"Max, I’m so sorry," I heard him say. That’s when it hit me. I knew that Suzie had died. Max has been my dad’s best friend for years. Suzie, his daughter, had a rare disease that mainly affected her body. Her brain was OK. She knew what was going on; she knew that she had problems and was different from other kids. Once she told her dad that she wished she could die and be born in a different body. Yet although she couldn’t live a normal life ,she was still happy.
When Suzie and I were little, we spent quite a bit of time together. As we grew up, we grew apart. She lived in New York, and I lived in the Midwest. When Suzie was ten she had to live in a hospital in Virginia. About eight months before she died, Max gave us her number at the hospital and we talked at least twice a week until the end. Suzie was always so excited to talk to us and wanted to know every detail about my life. She wanted to know everything I did and every thing I ate. In a way, she lived through me.
After we found out about her death, we made our plans to go to New York for the funeral. When she was alive, I sent her a Beanie Baby and she sent one back to me. I had bought her another one but never had the chance to send it to her, so I took it to put in her casket(棺材).
Her funeral was very different from any funeral I’d ever been to. After they lowered her casket, each one of us put a shovelful of dirt over her. I remember crying so hard, I felt weak. My cheeks burned from the tears. My whole body was shaking as I picked up the shovel, but I’m glad I did it.
When Suzie and I first started calling one another, I thought it would be more of a burden on me, but I was completely wrong. I learned so much from her. She gave me more than I could ever give to her. I will never forget her or the talks we had. I now know that I must never take anything for granted especially my health and the gift of life.
【小題1】What does the underlined part “In a way, she lived through me.” mean?

A.Suzie got to know what life outside hospital was like by sharing my experience.
B.Suzie was financially dependent of me.
C.Suzie managed to pull through her illness with the help of my family.
D.Suzie was too weak to live her own life.
【小題2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.Suzie was the only person helping the author with difficulties.
B.The author feared that she might also get the same disease as Suzie.
C.The author benefited a lot from talking on the phone with Suzie.
D.The author didn’t understand Suzie was her true friend until Suzie’s death.
【小題3】What is the most important lesson the author learned from Suzie’s death?
A.Never let go of a friend even if you are apart.
B.Be thankful for what we have in our life.
C.Talking with a friend can cure your illness.
D.We can learn more from our friends than they do from us.

The island Fiji has always been around me in my life. My parents met in Fiji when my father was a teacher as a Peace Corps volunteer and my mother a student. They taught me about its people, culture, foods and religious beliefs.

At the age of two, I made my first trip across the Pacific Ocean to Fiji. My mother and I made that trip unexpectedly because my grandma was ill and longed to see her American granddaughter. Although I have few memories of that first trip, I do remember grandma braiding (編辮子)my hair every day. The brush gliding through my hair is a feeling I will treasure forever because she passed away soon. I returned to America when I was five years old. This time I had a brother, Martin, who was two.

I resisted my third trip to Fiji when I was 15, being a teenager who did not want to spend the summer away from friends. It was this trip, however, that made me realize that Fiji is not just a place to visit but a part of who I am. The smells and sounds and sights came back to me, but the best part was getting to know my relatives.

Vishal was one cousin I quickly bonded with. Born two days before me, I had only known him through pictures before. Though raised oceans apart in different cultures, we talked and laughed about everything from American sports to Fijian dancing. I was able to form close ties with all my cousins, and when I talk about them now, it’s as if I have known them my whole life. Spending time with them helped me understand the traditions and values my mother grew up with. Hospitality and care and respect for family members are central values in Fijian culture.

I truly enjoyed learning about my roots during this trip. Fiji is just like a second home, and I will never forget the time I have spent there.

A.she didn’t want to separate from her brother

B.she didn’t know her cousins there very well

C.she didn’t want to separate from her American friends

D.her grandma had passed away

3.Which of the following is TRUE about Vishal?

A.He is younger than the author.

B.The author had met him on her first trip to Fiji.

C.He and the author had lots of common interests.

D.He and the author held different opinions about Fijian culture.
