Mr. Gray travelled a lot on business: He sold machines of different kinds to farmers.
He had a big car, and usually      driving it long distances, but he was quite satisfied to go by   sometimes too, especially when the      was bad. He was a little afraid of driving in rain or snow, and it was   tiring to sit comfortably in a train and looked out of the window without being worried about how   was going to get to the next place.
One of Mr. Gray’s problems was often     to stay when he reached some small place in the country. He did not      great comfort and wonderful food, but he found it annoying (使惱火) when he was given a cold room, and there was no hot water or food after a long and     day.
Late   winter evening, Mr. Gray arrived at a small railway station. The    by train that day had not been at all interesting, and Mr. Gray was cold and tired and   . He was looking forward to a simple   satisfying meal by a brightly burning fire, and then a hot bath and comfortable bed.        he was walking to the taxi rank, he said to a local man who was also  there.  “As this is my first visit to this   of the country and I was in too much of a hurry to    about hotels before l left home, I would very much like to know    you have here.”
The local man answered, “We have      .”
“And which would you    me to go to ?”Mr. Gray asked him.
The local man thought for a while and then answered, “Well, it’s like this: Whichever one you go to, you’ll be    you didn’t go to the other.”

[1] If you are applying for an American higher education, you probably dream of getting into an Ivy League (常青藤聯(lián)盟) university. The eight schools with the best reputations attract top students from the United States and many other countries. However, on average, the Ivy League schools accept less than 15 percent of applicants. And with the applicants growing in size year on year, it is becoming more and more difficult _________.
[2] So how can you give yourself the best chance of admission?
[3]Having a high school grade point average (GPA) in the top 10 percent of your class and being ranked among the top few students dramatically betters your chances. But although GPA and SAT scores are important, they only tell admission deans(主任)part of the story.
[4] The whole admissions process will single out (挑選出) from a large pool of academically strong applicants the unique individuals. They stand out because they have shown in their interviews a range of virtues (優(yōu)點) expected of these universities.Take Harvard for example.Although there is no guarantee of admission, the school judges applicants based on 15 additional criteria.
[5] Intellectual curiosity (求知欲) comes first tor almost all admission deans.Schools look to such students because they believe their peers find them stimulating(激勵人的)inside and outside the classroom.
[6] Leadership also weighs heavily. The school would rather see an applicant who takes on additional responsibility in one or two areas where he or she is good at, rather than one who is merely "very good" academically. This can mean the class presidency(主席職務(wù)), leading the cheerleading team or being the officer of a student union.
[7] Whether a person has personal warmth and cares about others counts a lot with the admission deans.Writing an essay on a personal experience, like a summer spent raising funds for the earthquake victims or teaching in a local school, can show that a person has qualities in addition to academic experience.

Do you want to work with people or animals or machines or tools? Do you want to work indoors or outdoors, directly serve people in need or serve people behind the scenes? These are the typical questions that a volunteer service agency would ask.
Every year, thousands and thousands of people in the west offer volunteer services. Volunteering greatly strengthens the community partly because it helps the old, the young, the weak, the sick, the disabled and the injured to overcome difficulties.
Volunteers usually help in many different ways. They may give people advice, offer friendship to the young, drive the elderly to church, counsel kids against drugs. Work as an assistant in a school or nursing home, raise funds, plant trees, help out in local libraries and do many other things.
Volunteering can be a few hours a week or a few hours a month, time during the day, evenings or weekends, either part time or full time. Anybody __________ can become a volunteer.
The art of volunteering is a process of both giving and receiving. Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people and make new friends and mix with people from all walks of life. Volunteering is an excellent way to experiment, practice and try out new techniques and skills. It is much more effective to practice a skill than to read about it or study it in a classroom. Volunteering is a great way to develop good teamwork skills, discover your individual talents and explore career choices. Being a volunteer takes individuals on a wonderful journey and helps them learn many important things beyond their school.

Many students want to find friends on the Internet as a way of practising their language skills and learning more about new cultures. Traditional pen pals were the primary source for such contacts, and students could write each other letters. With the Internet, fingding friends has become much easier, and such relationships are called key pals.
However, care and consideration should be given when finding friends on the Internet:
◎Search the Internet for reputable(有信譽的) services. Look for reviews of such sites to learn more about other students’ experiences. Don’t join a service until you have done your research.
◎Check to see if you can use a nickname, instead of __________, to protect your identity.
◎Never give personal information to anyone, including your home address, phone number, and birthday.
◎Stop contact with others if you feel uncomfortable with the topics of conversation. Again, if you protect your identity, this will be easier to do. Tell your teachers, parents, or even local law enforement if problem arise.
Try to use the language you are studying in the classroom in your communication with others.
◎Ask appropriate questions that will also help you learn about other cultures. Remember that someone’s personal experience might help you to understand a whole culture. You have to talk to many different people, and this will get you started.

After Mom died, I began visiting Dad every morning before I went to work. He was frail and moved slowly, but he always had a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice on the kitchen table for me, along with an unsigned note reading, “Drink your juice.” Such a gesture, I knew, was as far as Dad had ever been able to go in expressing his love. In fact, I remember, as a kid I had questioned Mom“ Why doesn't Dad love me!” Mom frowned. “Who said he doesn't love you!” “Well, he never tells me,” I complained. “He never tells me either,” she said, smiling. “But look how hard he works to take care of us, to buy us food and clothes, and to pay for this house. That's how your father tells us he loves us.” Then Mom held me by the shoulders and asked, “Do you understand?’’ I nodded slowly. I understood in my head, but not in my heart. I still wanted my father to put his arms around me and tell me he loved me. Dad owned and operated a small scrap(片)metal business, and after school I often hung around while he worked. I always hoped he'd ask me to help and then praise me for what I did. He never asked. His tasks were too dangerous for a young boy to attempt, and Mom was already worried enough that he'd hurt himself. Dad hand fed scrap steel into a device that chopped it as cleanly as a butcher chops a rack of ribs. The machine looked like a giant pair of scissors, with blades thicker than my father's body. If he didn't feed those terrifying blades just right, he risked serious injury. “Why don't you hire someone to do that for you?” Mom asked Dad one night as she bent over him and rubbed his aching shoulders with a strong smelling liniment. “Why don't you hire a cook? ”Dad asked, giving her one of his rare smiles.
Many years later, during my first daily visit, after drinking the juice my father had squeezed for me, I walked over, hugged him and said, “I love you, Dad.” From then on I did this every morning. My father never told me how he felt about my hugs, and there was never any expression on his face when I gave them.

Which boy hasn’t dreamed of being a cool secret agent (特工)? The wonderful fighting abilities and the world-saving adventures are much more colourful than most people’s everyday lives. Well, Cody Banks is just like any other boy, except that he is not just dreaming. He has a big secret his friends never know about. He was trained to be a spy (間諜)by a special CIA programme, which was made to look like a summer camp. He learned high-speed driving,hand-to-hand fighting and the use of high-tech tools.
After proving he could become a young hero by saving a baby from a runaway car,Banks gets his first real task. He must make friends with a popular girl at school,Natalie Connors. Then,he must spy on her father,a scientist who has developed a dangerous technology (技術(shù)).Banks must stop a group of bad people from forcing Natalie’s father into using the technology to endanger the world.
The CIA may have taught him first-class self-defence moves, but they didn’t show him how to talk to girls. Banks has zero ability when it comes to dealing with girls.
