The other day at a supermarket, I saw a naughty boy of about six crying loudly, falling to the floor and refusing to move. All the while the troubled mother was trying to persuade him to behave well but failed.A little smack on his bottom would have done the job,I thought.
Teenagers also cause discipline(紀律)problems. As a teacher, I had a 16-year-old student who had fallen in love with a waiter at a fast-food restaurant. In fact, she had left home to stay with him.So we decided to put her in the school hostel. She refused. When she heard her mother begging her to stay in the hostel she turned round and said:“Why don't you stay in the hostel if you like it so much?”
My palms were itching to slap her for being so rude but the poor mother continued to cajole her, hoping that gentle persuasion would work wonders. It did not.The last I heard, she had run away from home again.
The list goes on and on.Could it be that today's parents are softer and believe that they must not rod(棍棒懲罰)their children for fear of the bad result? Or do they actually believe that the children will get rid of the bad habits and behave well naturally as they grow older? I beg to disagree.I believe it is the parents' duty to discipline the children even at a young age.
My children who are now adults will prove the fact that I used the rod when I thought it necessary.Later when they went abroad, they related to their British university friends on how they were disciplined.Their friends abroad were filled with horror and told my daughter that I could be charged with child abuse(虐待).However,my daughter showed great respect for me when she told them that she would not be where she was today if not for my strict discipline.

When I was young,I wished for a good car and a big house. That was my idea of success. I took all the advanced classes and tried to do well in the exams with my mind set on going to a key school. I just knew that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford the car and the dream house. All the way through junior years,my mind was planning this beautiful future.
Then in the eleventh grade, many losses changed my mind. First, one of my friends died at 16. Soon after, my great-grandmother passed away followed by my beloved fourth-grade teacher. These events left me not knowing what to do or where to go. Death had never touched me so closely.
After a long period of emptiness, it finally struck me: Life is not promised and neither is future success. Though I was attempting to achieve material success, I was not enjoying my daily life. I realized that finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with me forever and that is real success.
Enjoying life's precious quirks (偶發(fā)事件) makes an ordinary person more successful than a wealthy person who isn't content and takes everything for granted. The summer before senior years, my attitude changed greatly. Instead of memorizing facts, I began learning skills. Instead of focusing on the future, I focused on today and the many blessings and successes that came with it.
I still get excellent grades, but now I devote weeks to studying instead of struggling for exams, and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. For me, being successful means truly living life each day.
68.The reason why the author changed his idea of success is ____.
A.that he can't afford his house
B.that his beloved teacher was dead
C.that he didn't know what to do or where to go
D.that he lost a few beloved persons in a short time
69.What does the author want to tell the readers?
A.The true meaning of the life.
B.The true meaning of studying
C.How to achieve success.
D.His opinion about success.
70. According to the passage which of the following is TRUE?
A.The writer thinks the success is not promised.
B.His teacher died before the death of his grandpa.
C.The writer didn’t do well in all the exams.
D.He didn’t want to take all the exams.

Computers are helpful because they offer a wide range of functions and services that are not available anywhere else. There are four main uses: word processing, Internet/ communications, digital video/ audio composition, and desktop publishing.
The word processing capabilities of computers are amazing. They can automatically correct your spelling and grammar mistakes. The cutting and pasting features are incredibly simple and very useful for revision. Having a digital backup is an added benefit. All of these things help writers get the job done. The part of the earth’s history known as the coal age began more than 250 million years ago and lasted millions of years. During that time, in the area that is now the United States, coal beds formed from Texas to the north Atlantic coast.
At that time thick forests swamps(沼澤) covered much of the earth’s surface. Great trees died and fell into the swamps. Then they rotted (腐爛)and new trees and plants grew on top of them. The process repeated itself for thousands of years. The rotted plants turned into a substance called peat(泥炭), which is still forming today in many swamps.
Meanwhile the land surface was changing. Movement in the earth’s crust (地殼) pushed up hills in some places, while elsewhere land sank. Swift rivers ran from the hills; heavy rains fell and the rivers overflowed, leaving muddy sand in the sunken wooded places and swamps. Oceans, too, poured in over the low-lying land, carrying sand that covered the peaty areas.
The pressure of water and sand pressed the oxygen and hydrogen out of the peat, leaving carbon. Under constant pressure, the rotted material, containing a high percentage of carbon, formed gradually into coal.

Funeral homes aren’t just for dead peopled . They’re for our passed–on pets too these days. Pet Angel Memorial Center in Carmel. Indiana, helps guide grieving (悲痛的)animal owners through a vast range of burial and menorial options . The staff of five, all former clients (顧客), then carries out the owner’s wishes . Perhaps the most important service the center provides, though, is an understanding to cry on .
Owner Coleen Ellis started the country’s first pet funeral home there years ago after the death of her dog Mico. It was then that she discovered her veterinarian(獸醫(yī)), like most throughout the United States, put dead animals in garbage bags and stored them in a freezer for up to one week . A disposal company then picked up the bodies and took them to a landfill(廢物埋填地)site.
Before opening Pet Anget Memorial Center, Ellis worked in human funeral homes for 15 years, helping guide families through the end of life process. Her work with pets, though, is unusual. Only a handful of animal funeral homes exist, most of which Ellis said she helped get started.

The lowest priced package starts at $ 230  and includes pick-up , as well as a keepsake(紀念品)paw print. Friends, family and surviving pets often accompany grieving owners.
The atmosphere is different from a human funeral home, where people stay their distance to give the grieving family privacy. At the center , pet owners mourn together . Expressions about water are mostly as common as water itself.
The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression. Hot water was used five hundred years ago to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle. That no longer happens. But we still get “in hot water”. When we are in hot water, we are in trouble. It can be any kind of trouble, serious or not so serious. A person who breaks a law can be in hot water with the police. A young boy can be in hot water with his mother if he walks in the house with dirty shoes.
“Being in deep water” is somewhat like being in hot water. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult position. Imagine a person who can not swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you don’t have the ability to solve. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks without knowing anything about the stock market.
“To keep your head above water” is a colorful expression that means staying out of debt. A company seeks to keep its head above water during economic hard times. A man who loses his job tries to keep his head above water until he finds a new job.
“Water over the dam” is another expression about past events. It is something that is finished, and cannot be changed. The expression comes from the idea that water has floated over a dam and cannot be brought back again. When a friend is troubled by a mistake he or she has made, you might tell him or her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.
Another common expression “to hold water” is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about . It probably comes from a way of testing the condition of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes; if it does not hold water, then, it is weak and not worth debating.
“Throwing cold water” also is an expression that deals with ideas or proposals. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems, but your wife throws cold water on the idea because she says a new car costs too much.
60. Don’t cheat in this exam! Or you’ll      if you are caught cheating by the teacher.
A. be in hot wate                  B. have to hold water
C . be in deep water                 D. keep your head above water
61.The expression using water in Paragraph       has almost the same meaning as “Things done cannot be undone.”
A. 3    B. 4   C . 5    D. 6
62. We can see from this passage that many of the expressions using water have         meanings.
A. double   B. unpleasant   C . close   D. moral
63.The best title for this passage should be         .
A. The history of water         B. Cold water or hot water
C . Water and it culture         D. Expressions concerning water
