Though the political field is still ruled by men, we can still see another splendid scene — those women with high heels and makeup are playing an active role on the political stage.
Theresa May — the Iron Lady who cleans up the mess
She is the second female Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader after Margaret Thatcher. The mess left by men is finally for women to clean up. After the worldwide–shocking “Brexit”, Cameron has successfully thrown Theresa into trouble. A remain campaigner as she was, Theresa insists that “Brexit means Brexit”. Since taking office, she has already shown her calmness, humbleness, efficiency and powerful leadership.
Merkel — the unquestioned “Big Sister”
From a PhD in physics to a role on the political stage, she is Merkel, the first female chancellor(總理)in German history. Facing the European migrant crisis, she advocated the policy of “Open the Door” and put forward the slogan “We are able to manage it”. However, the coming of refugees not only caused serious social security problems but also brought terrorism and political tsunami.
Hillary — a woman’s presidential dream
Born in a wealthy business family and graduating from Law School of Yale University, Hillary struggled for thirty years on the US political stage and was once the First Lady, Federal Senator and Secretary of State. She is an outstanding but controversial woman in this day and age, since she is rich in not only political experience but also scandals. Hillary, early 70 years old now, ran for the US president twice, only ending up with a broken dream.
Park Geun-hye — a woman who married the country
In December, 2012, the 60-year-old Park Geun-hye was elected the first female president of South Korea. She once pledged: “I don’t have parents, nor do I have a husband and children, and the country is the only one I wish to serve.” Yet the “confidante(紅顏知己)scandal” was undoubtedly a political earthquake for her, ending her presidency and forcing her out of office in March, 2017.
1.What does Theresa May mean by saying Brexit means Brexit?
A. She will carry on Brexit. B. She will postpone Brexit.
C. She will oppose Brexit. D. She will think twice about Brexit.
2.Who ran for presidency twice but in vain?
A. Merkel B. Theresa May
C. Hillary D. Park Geun-hye
3.What can we infer about the four women?

C. Hillary is the most successful First Lady.
D. Park Geun-hye was in office for not more than five years.

I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn’t want me for the film - it wanted somebody as well known as Paul - he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技藝)and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other - but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core(核心)of our relationship off the screen.
We shared the brief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back - he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.
I last saw him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn’t talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn’t need a lot of words.
1.Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to author at first?
A.Paul Newman wanted it. B.The studio powers didn’t like his agent.
C.He wasn’t famous enough. D.The director recommended someone else.
2.Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship?
A.They were of the same dge. B.They worked in the same theater.
C.They were both good actors. D.They han similar charactertics.
3.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Their belief. B.Their care for chileden.
C.Their success. D.Their support for each other.
4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the test?
A.To show his love of films. B.To remember a friend.
C.To introduce a new movie. D.To share his acting experience.

There are many superstitions(迷信) in Britain, but one of the most widelyheld is that it is unlucky to walk under a ladder—even if it means stepping off the pavement into a busy street!
①Walking under a ladder
If you must walk under a ladder you can avoid bad luck by crossing your fingers and keeping them crossed until you've seen a dog. Alternatively, you must lick your finger and make a cross on the toe of your shoe, and not look again at the shoe until the mark has dried.
②Umbrella
Another common superstition is that it is unlucky to open an umbrella in the house—it will either bring misfortune to the person that opened it or to the household. The superstition could date from the old time when its purpose was to act as a sunshade. If opened indoors, it might be considered to be an attack on the sun. Anyone opening an umbrella indoors in fine weather is unpopular, as it inevitably brings rain!
③Number 13
The number 13 is said to be unlucky for some, and when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday, anyone wishing to avoid an inauspicious event had better stay indoors.
④Seven years bad luck
The worst misfortune that can befall you is caused by breaking a mirror, as it brings seven years of bad luck! The superstition is supposed to have originated in ancient times, when mirrors were considered to be tools of the gods.
⑤Black cat
In the UK, black cats are generally considered lucky in the UK, even though they are connected with witchcraft(巫術(shù)):You are said to be lucky if a black cat crosses your path.
1.Which experience is considered to be lucky according to the passage?
A. walking under a ladder
B. opening an umbrella in the house
C. breaking a mirror
D. a black cat crossing your path
2.Which of the followings is RIGHT in UK according to the passage?
A. Opening an umbrella in the rain is not acceptable or unpopular.
B. Black cats are generally considered unlucky because they have something with witchcraft.
C. Bad luck brought by walking under a ladder cannot be avoided using certain ways.
D. If you are to open a clothes store on May 13 in Britain, you had better change the date.
3.Which two superstitions are related to history?
A. ①② B. ②④

The most exciting storms are the ones with flashes of lightning.Unfortunately, those are scarce, unless you are near the Catatumbo River in Northwestern Venezuela. Here, nature's grandest sound and light show is often seen, because it happens about 160 nights a year. And it lasts for as long as 10 hours at a time. And unlike other lightning storms that cause just one or two flashes, this one is with as many as 280 per hour.It is the highest in the world. Besides, each one of them is so powerful that each can power every light bulb in South America. Not surprisingly, they can be seen for almost 250 miles.Fishermen and sailors often use them to guide them across the waters during dark nights.
What's even more surprising is that the lightning has been happening above the same spot where the Catatumbo River meets Lake Maracaibo for thousands of years. The best part is that the show is different every night. That's because the color of the lightning changes, depending on the amount of water in the atmosphere. On dry nights, the lightning appears white. When the air is not dry,it helps split up the bright light into red, orange and even purple.
Strangely enough, though this has been going on for centuries, scientists have still not been able to figure out the cause of this phenomenon. Some say that the storms are the result of the interaction of the area's unusual topography(地貌),wind and heat.Others, however, believe that the storms are caused by a kind of gas in the area. The locals simply think that it is the "spirit of Catatumbo" that lights up the night sky.
1.According to Paragraph 1,if we say something is scarce,we probably mean .
A. it is far away B. it is very terrible
C. it can be hardly seen D. it can be very dangerous
2.We know that in Northwestern Venezuela, .
A. people daren't go out at night
B. it rains heavily almost every day
C. lightning is used to power light bulbs
D. storms with flashes of lightning are common
3.What has the greatest influence on the colors of the lightning?
A. The spot of the lightning
B. The air of the lightning spot
C. The color of the environment
D. The level of water in the Catatumbo River
4.From the last paragraph,we learn that .
A. scientists will no longer study the lightning storms there
B. locals know about the lightning storms better than scientists
C. heat in Northwestern Venezuela is different from any other place
D. the reason why such lightning storms happen there is still unknown

A buld-it-yourself solar still(蒸餾器) is one of the best ways to obtain drinking water in areas where the liquid is not readily available. Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only components required, though, are a 5’ 5’ sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container— perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.
To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole.
Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down with a rock. The plastic should now form a cone(圓錐體) with 45-degree-angled sides. The low point of the sheet must be centered directly over, and no more than three inches above, the cup.
The solar still works by creating a greenhouse under the plastic. Ground water evaporates (蒸發(fā)) and collects on the sheet until small drops of water form, run down the material and fall off into the cup. When the container is full, you can suck the refreshment out through the tube, and won’t have to break down the still every time you need a drink.
1.What do we know about the solar still equipment from the first paragraph?
A.It’s delicate. B.It’s expensive.
C.It’s complex. D.It’s portable
2.What does the underlined phrase “the water catcher” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The tube B.The still
C.The hole D.The cup
3.What’s the last step of constructing a working solar still?
A.Dig a hole of a certain size B.Put the cup in place
C.Weight the sheet’s center down D.Cover the hole with the plastic sheet
4.When a solar still works, drops of water come into the cup form .
A.the plastic tube B.outside the hole
C.the open air D.beneath the sheet
