此處動(dòng)詞wonder后面是一個(gè)賓語(yǔ)從句,賓語(yǔ)從句中的介詞like缺少賓語(yǔ),所以引導(dǎo)詞既要起引導(dǎo)作用,又要做like的賓語(yǔ),that只起引導(dǎo)作用,而what可以起雙重作用,故把that改成what

a population of意為“……的人口。故在has后加a。

consist of意為……

根據(jù)關(guān)鍵詞“many other”可知,此處應(yīng)該用名詞復(fù)數(shù)。

故把but改成and。

In the United States, the baby boomer generation(嬰兒潮一代) include those who were born in the time after World War II. Those babies have retired or are now reaching the retirement age. As these adults age, many of their adult children worry about how to take care of their aging parents. In the United States it is not common for several generations to live under one roof. Once children grow up and get married, they move out, leaving their aging parents to care for themselves. When these aging parents can no longer take care of themselves because of age or illness, it is not uncommon for adult children in the US to place their elderly parents in a nursing home.

A nursing home is a place that offers care for the elderly and ill. As the name suggests, nursing homes have professionals including nurses, doctors and social workers to help aging adults deal with the challenges of daily life. And their mental health could be guaranteed for elderly people to get relaxed, accompanied by those of the same age. Most nursing homes also have social activities for the elderly to participate in and keep active. These activities range from games to dance classes, and movie nights. Nursing homes are supposed to provide three nutritious meals for their residents.

Nursing homes are controversial, however. There have been cases across the country of staff in nursing homes treating the elderly residents badly and even robbing them. There are different states and federal agencies that are supposed to oversee(監(jiān)管) nursing homes. Some people feel that it should be the responsibility of family members, especially adult children, to care for their aging or sick parents. However, many adult children have their own children and families to take care of, and do not have the means to care for their elderly parents; others worry about medical skills needed if their elderly parents are seriously ill. And these problems of caring for parents are bothering more and more adults in the US at present.

1The first paragraph mainly about___________.

A.when the baby boomer generation in the US were born

B.whether the elderly and their children should live together

C.why Americans put their elderly parents in nursing homes

D.how Americans look after their aging parents differently

2How many advantages of nursing homes are mentioned?

A.Three.B.Four.

C.Five.D.Six.

3What’s the writer’s attitude toward sending parents to nursing homes?

A.Indifferent.B.Understandable.

C.Favorable.D.Disapproving.

4What’s the purpose of the text?

A.To discuss how to care for aging parents.

B.To ask the government to oversee nursing homes.

C.To prove nursing homes do more harm than good.

D.To show problems faced by American adult children.

We know that too much of the wrong kind of food can be bad for our health, but for some people having a food allergy, eating certain things can actually be harmful. Now it is seemingly affecting more and more of us.

An allergy is caused by the immune system fighting substances in the environment, known as allergens, that it should see as harmless. 1It means people have to spend their lives following strict dietary restrictions and worrying about the ingredients of everything they consume. We often hear about people having allergies to dairy products and to peanuts. Last year a teenager died after suffering a fatal allergic reaction from eating a baguette containing sesame seeds. 2

Research has found that this problem is particularly affecting children. 3 Dr Alexandra Santos from King’s College London says food allergy now affects about 7 percent of children in the UK, and 9 percent of those in Australia.

4 Dr Santos says, the increase in allergies is not simply the effect of society becoming more aware of them and better at diagnosing them. 5 She adds that possible factors are pollution, dietary changes and less exposure to bacteria, which change how our immune systems respond.

A.So what might be the cause?

B.It seems to be more environmental.

C.Similarly, food allergic reaction is deadly.

D.This led to a call for better food-labeling laws.

E.Besides, more adults are suffering from food allergies.

F.However, food allergies can cause life-threatening reactions.

G.More and more of them are having allergic reactions to certain foodstuffs.

One of the most efficient ways to promote peace and jump-start flagging economies is to empower girls and invest in their education. Today, girls’ lack of access to basic education is compounded when it comes to the use of digital technology, leaving them far behind boys. And because the world is ever more digital, those who lack basic Internet skills will find it increasingly more difficult to participate in the formal economy, to obtain a quality education, to access health care, information and psychosocial support, to have their voices heard.

Since 2013 the global gender gap in male and female access to the Internet has actually increased from 11 to 12 percent. Worse yet, women and girls living in the poorest countries are 31 percent less likely than men and boys to have access to the Internet. In developing countries, some 200 million fewer women than men own a mobile phone, the most common means of Internet access there. This digital divide is increasing, and should it continue at the present pace, it is projected that over 75 percent of women and girls will lack internet access and digital skills.

There are many causes for the digital gender gap. They include girls’ exclusion from basic education writ large, from specific technology education and design, high costs of both devices and Internet access, scarcity of content relevant for women and girls, and socio-cultural biases and discrimination, such as barriers to women speaking freely and privately both online and offline. Indeed, one of the most insidious reasons why girls may be discouraged from learning how to access and use digital technology is also a groundless one: that girls are simply not good at using technology.

The United Nations has affirmed that human rights online are human rights offline. These stereotypes reinforce harmful norms that keep women and girls from enjoying their human rights.

According to the International Institute for Sustainable Development, an independent, non-profit and non-governmental research organization, the gender digital divide is a major roadblock to women’s economic empowerment and participation in the economy. Without a major increase of policy effort and investment, most of the benefits of technological change will be enjoyed only by men, worsening gender inequality.

In the words of USAID Senior Gender Coordinator Michelle Bekkering, a girl’s future should be defined not by her sex, but by her commitment to hard work and ability to access the resources she needs to succeed.

Girls are left far behind boys in terms of digital technology

Bats are the only mammals that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal of their size. European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries aimed at fighting the aging process in human beings.

Last week, the group of scientists said they had identified important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied the bats’ chromosomes (染色體), a line of genes found in the nucleus of cells. The scientists were most interested in structures connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres (端粒), which protect the ends of chromosomes and shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down. They say this is what cause aging.

The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived the longest, an average of 37 years. The scientists said this and a related species, which are grouped together under the name Myotis, had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for the oldest age, reaching 41 years. The scientists’ findings suggest that these bats’ cells have the ability to maintain and repair their telomeres. This helps guard against the aging process.

Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that. The scientists found that only 19 species of mammals live longer than humans when their body size is considered. Eighteen of these are bats.

1Why are European researchers studying bats?

A.To learn the similar habits between bats and human beings.

B.To find out why the greater mouse-eared bats live a long life.

C.To try to understand why bats prefer to fly during the night.

D.To discover a good way to prevent human beings from aging.

2What does the second paragraph mainly explain to us?

A.The structures of the bats’ chromosomes.B.What causes aging biologically.

C.The functions of telomeres.D.What causes cells to break down.

3Why do the greater mouse-eared bat and another Myotis bat live so long?

A.They are grouped together under the name Myotis.

B.Their telomeres are decreasing with age.

C.Their cells are able to keep up and fix their telomeres.

D.They have more telomeres than human beings do.

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Bats live 10 times longer than other mammals.

B.Bats enjoy the longest life among mammals.

C.The greater mouse-eared bat and other bats should have lived longer.

D.Many bats live longer than human beings considering their body size.
