13.If you watched the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, you might have noticed that several athletes, including US swimmer Michael Phelps, had circular bruises on their bodies. These bruises were the results of"cupping therapy"(拔罐療法)a traditional Chinese medical practice that has been around for more than 2,000 years.Cupping therapy involves attaching circular cups to the skin using suction.(吸出)The suction is created either by heating the cup inside or by using a handheld pump. This suction pulls the skin upward into the cup.Sometimes it can leave dark red bruises, other times there is no mark at all.
Many athletes say that they have benefited from the therapy.Phelps used the therapy in the fall of 2014 and has used it about twice a week since, reported ABC News.Another US swimmer,Dana Vollmer, also believes that"it really helps with blood flow, and helps pull swelling out of different areas."
To figure out whether cupping has many physical effects, last year researchers from Germany carried out a test in which a sham treatment was provided. In the study, the same type of cups was used in the real treatment and the sham treatment. But in the sham treatment, the cups had a hole at the top so that they cou ldn't create the proper suction.
The tested patients, who suffered from a disorder that causes a lot of pain, were told that they would receive either a traditional cupping of"soft cupping".But they were not informed that the so-called"soft cupping"was a sham treatment.
It turned out that most patients correctly guessed which kind of cupping they had received. In both groups, patients also experienced about the same reductions in pain. The results suggest the effects of cupping therapy might come from factors that are not necessarily part of the treatment itself, probably resulting from people feeling that the treatment works, the researchers told the LiveScience Website.
The question of whether cupping therapy works still needs to be answered. But because the treatment is relatively safe and it could be helpful for some people,"The therapy can be used as a part of a comprehensive treatment program involving other exercises, nutritional choices and life-style interventions",Dr Brent Bauer, director of the US'Mayo Clinic Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program, told LiveScience.

17.It's said that you don't know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes.And you also don't know what it's like for older people to travel until you accompany one on a trip.
After flying with my elderly father from Washington,D.C.,to L.A.in July,I began to realize that a companion has important tasks that can make a journey easier for older people.I booked nonstop tickets on JetBlue to avoid tiring,confusing connections,and we flew directly into small,manageable Long Beach Airport.Even though my father could walk,I arranged with the airline for wheelchair assistance,which meant we got on board first.
When I took him back to the airport for his return flight to Washington,I got permission from JetBlue to wait with him at the gate instead of saying goodbye at the security checkpoint.I wished he'd had a first-class seat and access to a comfortable airline club.Better yet,I wish I had flown with him both ways.As I watched the attendant wheel him to the lift that took him from the tarmac(飛機(jī)跑道)to the plane,I felt like an anxious mom sending her child to school for the first time.
Things can go awry on a plane trip.And then there is the horrifying story about Joe and Margie.When they landed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport,a wheelchair attendant met them to help with a connection.But somehow Margie,who had Alzheimer's disease,disappeared.
I didn't need to worry about my father wandering away; at 82,his mind was sharper than mine.But his hearing was poor,so I worried about what would happen if he missed an important announcement.Fortunately,everything went just fine.Careful planning made the trip successful.
Next time I travel with a senior,I'll know better.I hope there will be a next time.

25.Why did the man buy nonstop tickets?C
A.His father was tired of flights.
B.He had important tasks to do.
C.He cared about his father.
D.His schedule was tight.
26.How did the author feel when seeing his father off?C
A.Disappointed.
B.Delighted.
C.Worried.
D.Sad.
27.What does the underlined part"go awry"probably mean?D
A.be amused.
B.carry on as usual.
C.live up to one's expectation.
D.be away from the correct course.
28.What can we learn from the passage?D
A.taking a trip does great good to seniors.
B.it is a pleasant experience to travel with seniors.
C.to have a long journey with seniors is unpractical.

8.A new study finds that our brains are wired to make music-color connections depending on how the music makes us feel.Mozart's"Flute Concerto No.1in G Major"is most often associated with bright yellow and orange,whereas his"Requiem in D Minor"is linked to bluish gray,the findings revealed.
US researchers from the University of California,Berkeley,enlisted nearly 100subjects for a study on music and color.With 37colors,the UC Berkeley study found that people tend to pair faster-paced music in a major key with lighter,more vivid,yellow colors,whereas slower-paced music in a minor key is more likely to be teamed up with darker,grayer,bluer colors.
"Surprisingly,we can predict with 95percent accuracy how happy or sad the colors people pick will be based on how happy or sad the music is that they are listening to,"said lead author and UC Berkeley vision scientist Stephen Palmer.
In three experiments,the subjects listened to 18classical music pieces that varied in pace (slow,medium,fast) and in major VS minor keys.In the first experiment,participants were asked to pick five of the 37colors that best matched the music to which they were listening.Separately,they rated each piece of music on a scale of happy to sad,strong to weak,lively to dull,and calm to angry.
Next,the research team plans to study particiapants in Turkey where traditional music employs a wider range of scales than just major and minor."We know that in Mexico and the US the responses are very similar,"Palmer said."But we don't yet know about China or Turkey."
