When you enter a crowded room or go on a picnic or to a party, who is the most attractive and appealing person? It is the person who is cheerful, has a smiling face and behaves as if he or she is enjoying every moment of the event! Such people have an optimistic opinion on life. They are the ones with a positive attitude. On the other hand, let’s see that fellow in the corner with a long face.He is most probably thinking about the time and money wasted in having fun.He is a pessimist, one with a negative attitude.

A person with a positive attitude gets on well with the job at hand.He doesn’t worry about what’s gone before or what might happen in the future. If there is a problem, he quickly thinks of ways to solve it.If the problem cannot be solved singly, he seeks help from someone else.He doesn’t feel that it’s beneath his dignity to seek assistance.

When Sonal lost her history notes days before an important examination, she sat down and cried. Then she pulled herself together, borrowed a friend’s notes, worked day and night and managed to copy down whatever she had lost.Sonal passed the exam with flying colors.

It’s just not possible, even for the greatest optimist, to smile all the time and feel good all day.Everyone has a period of blues now and then, when everything seems sad and without cheer. But once you develop a positive attitude, once you realize that life is a series of ups and downs, dark clouds and bright sunshine, in no time at all, you’ve bounced back, ready to welcome the world again with open arms and a huge smile! So from this moment on, keep your face to the sunshine and you’ll never see the shadows.

Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the websites you’ve visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

In fact, it’s likely that some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a husband or wife, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a police or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you’ve never intended to be seen.

Some experts tell us boundaries are healthy, and it’s important to reveal (暴露) yourself to your friends, family and lovers in stages, at proper times. But few boundaries could remain. The digital equipment makes it easy for strangers to know who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can even reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.

The key question is: Does that matter?

When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey shows that 60 percent of them feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.”

But people often say one thing and do another. Only a tiny number of Americans change the behaviors in an effort to protect their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths (收費(fèi)站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track your automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquits has run a series of tests, and these tests show that the majority of Americans will not keep personal secret just in order to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon (優(yōu)惠券)

But privacy does matter—at least sometimes. It’s like health: when you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone, do you wish you’d done more to protect it. So, when it comes to privacy, why do so many people say one thing and do another? And what can be done about it?

1. What would be the experts advise on the relationships between friends?

   A. Friends should open their hearts to each other.

   B. Friends should always be faithful to each other.

  C. There should be a distance even between friends.

   D. There should be fewer secrets between friends.

2. The author says “we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret” because ______.

   A. modern society has finally entered a much opened society

   B. people leave privacy around when using modern technology

   C. there are always people who are curious about others’ affairs

   D. many search engines profit by selling people’s privacy

3. According to Alessandro Acquits, most Americans _________.

   A. like to exchange their personal secret for the commercial benefit

   B. aren’t interested in the pitiful commercial benefit to keep their personal secret

   C. pay no attention to their personal secret for the commercial benefit

   D. can’t keep the balance between their personal secret and the commercial benefit

4. The best title for the passage could be _________?

   A. Is Privacy As Important As Health

   B. What Can Be Done to Protect the Privacy

   C. Does Privacy Matter

   D. Does Modern Technology Reveal Privacy

We've all heard the old saying,“Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Don't you believe it?Words are powerful, and they can hurt—a lot. In fact,if you're not careful, you can even hurt yourself,by using the wrong word in your writing.

Recently a friend sent me a copy of an e-mail she received from the customer service department of her credit card company, after she contacted them with a question about her account. She was happy with their positive response. But as I read the e-mail,one line jumped out at me:“In lieu of good customer service...”

Did they really mean they were offering her a few extra reward points instead of good customer service?I doubt it. More likely, what the customer service department meant to say was,“Because good customer service is important to us...” followed by the details of what they were doing to make sure she remained a happy customer.

So why didn't the writer say that?I can only guess that perhaps the writer liked the phrase “in lieu of”,thought it sounded more interesting than saying “because”,and so used it—without bothering to check the true meaning.

Have you ever done that?Try to impress others with a big word, only to find out you've used the word incorrectly? It's just the opposite effect, isn't it?You may impress people all right, but it's not the impression you were going for.

When you write, remember to choose your words carefully. People may still disagree with what you say,but they won't be able to dismiss you because you made careless mistakes in how you said it.

1.What's the writer's purpose in giving the saying?

A.To amuse the reader.     B.To persuade the reader.

C.To support a conclusion.  D.To lead to the topic.

2.What does the phrase “in lieu of” most probably mean?

A.Because of   B.In honour of   C.Instead of      D.In favour of

3.According to the writer, the customer service department ______.

A.didn't prefer to use familiar words to attract customers

B.didn't express what they really meant

C.didn't need to offer their customers extra reward points

    D.succeeded in impressing their customers
