It was one of the happiest times of my life. I was 29 and had just received my bachelor’s degree, graduating with honors despite working two jobs and being a wife and mother. My parents and five-year-old son were in the audience when I walked onto the stage at Ashland University to get my diploma. I was so excited and proud to be starting a teaching career and contributing more to my family’s well-being.
But when I got home that evening, there was a note from my husband written on the back of an envelope. It basically said he had come to get his clothes and wouldn’t be back. We’d been having trouble, but the finality of that note still came as a shock. He had emptied our bank account. We were horribly in debt. I had quit my previous jobs in expectation of interviewing for a teaching position. Plus, I was eight months pregnant.
I had my son, and I was about to bring a new life into the world, so despite my deep sadness, I had to go on. The next morning, I woke up, put my feet on the floor, took a deep breath, fixed breakfast, and basically did everything I always did. I used my routine to keep me moving. After being in the military for six years, I guess you can say I relied on my training, like all good soldiers do in tough situations. One small step after one small step was the way I bounced back.
And in the seven years since, I’ve continued moving forward. I got a job as a kindergarten teacher, earned a master’s degree in education, and watched my babies grow to twelve and seven. I certainly would never have chosen to put them through this, but looking back, I’m glad it happened to me when it did. It helped me find my voice and myself a lot sooner. It helped me grow independent, confident, and strong—things I’m hopefully instilling(灌輸) now in my children.
1.After getting her bachelor’s degree, the author expected to ________.
A. become a teacher B. be a wife and mother
C. work two jobs D. get divorced
2.What do we know about the author from Paragraph 2?
A. Her husband wrote a note to congratulate her on her graduation.
B. She had just been to a job interview when her husband left her.
C. Her husband paid off all the debts from the bank.
D. She was going to have another baby soon.
3.The author’s hardships in life made her ________.
A. become confident and independent
B. work harder in the kindergarten
C. use her routine to move forward
D. feel pleased with what happened to her
4.It can be inferred from the passage that __________.
A. The author’s parents helped her a lot
B. The author received further education later
C. The author earned a master’s degree when she was 29
D. The author didn’t know how to deal with marriage
5.What helped the author to pull through her hard time?
A. The divorce with her husband.
B. Her fellow soldiers in the army.
C. Her decision to find a new job.
D. A strong mind and love for her kids.

I wasn’t surprised when I read that actress Helen Hunt recently stated that she would never allow her young daughter to become a child star. Ms Hunt is the daughter of a Hollywood technical director, and grew up in Hollywood. Now in her late 40s, she started acting and modeling when she was eight and has probably seen a lot over those years in show business.
She has had a successful career. She earned four Golden Globes and four Emmys. She also attained the top honor of her profession when she won the Best Actress Academy Award for her role in the 1992 movie, As Good As It Gets. Given those accolades, Ms Hunt is successful. There is no doubt that her early experiences as a child star prepared her for what has been an outstanding adult career. Given those achievements, why would this star declare she’ll never allow her daughter, now at the age of six, to follow in her footsteps?
Everyone familiar with the entertainment scene is aware of the reasons for her attitude. Recent tabloid (小報(bào)) news headlines featuring the troubles of former child stars, among them Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and the late Gary Coleman, may answer the question. Although Ms Hunt managed to become a successful grown-up star, she apparently believes she’s an exception.
What Ms Hunt may be suggesting is that many very young stars go through unnatural childhoods on movie and TV sets. While they’re earning big incomes, they’re so pampered (縱容) by directors and praised by fans; they may get false impressions that their lives will always be that way. Then, within a few years, when faced with reality, they’re hurt and confused. After all the overwhelming affection, they find they can’t deal with the problems. That’s often when drugs and alcohol take over their lives.
Helen Hunt has some other reasons why she doesn’t want her daughter to be in the entertainment business. Many child stars can never make a successful transition to meaningful adulthood. However, as with many Hollywood movies, I believe there are both good and bad scenes about how it can be played out in real life.
1.According to the passage, Ms Hunt _________.
A. started acting and modeling when she was a little girl
B. has been acting for about 30 years
C. is the daughter of a famous actor
D. started singing when she was eight
2.The underlined word “accolades” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_________”.
A. difficulties B. awards
C. salaries D. opinions
3.The author thinks Helen Hunt’s success is mainly due to _________.
A. her hard work
B. the help of a technical director
C. her experiences as a child star
D. her talent and good luck
4.Helen Hunt wouldn’t allow her daughter to become a child star because she thinks _________.
A. child stars often take drugs and alcohol
B. being a child star may ruin her future
C. child stars aren’t able to solve their problems
D. it is difficult to succeed as a child actor
5.From the passage we can conclude that _________.
A. few child stars will succeed in the future
B. there is no way to save the entertainment business
C. the author has a different opinion about child stars
D. meaningful adulthood only belongs to non-child stars

At 4:53 pm. on January 12, United Nations aid worker Jens Kristensen was at his desk reading documents on the third floor of the Christopher Hotel, which served as UN headquarters in Port?au?Prince, when he felt a tremor(震顫). Four seconds later, the earthquake hit.
“In a split second, I considered whether to run for the door or hide under my desk,” says Kristensen, 48. “The door was closed, and I thought that maybe it was too far and I would be caught under falling debris(雜物), so I hid under the table.” A bookshelf topped onto his desk, protecting him from being crushed by rubble and trapping him in a tiny pocket. “I was confined as if in a small coffin,” he says. Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people who worried about getting older.
Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of 50. In fact, they say by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were when they were 18 years old.
The findings came from a survey of more than 340,000 adults in the US. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85.
The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25.
The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. The people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties.
The study also showed that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.
The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Acadamy of Science.
Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be linked to changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry.
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age.
1.What does the underlined word “negative” mean?
A. 負(fù)面的 B. 積極的
C. 平和的 D. 激烈的
2.What kind of people has the highest stress levels?
A. People were between the ages of 18 and 85.
B. Those in their seventies and eighties.
C. People reached their fifties.
D. Adults between the ages of 22 and 25.
3.Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older.
B. Researchers know exactly why happiness increases as people get older.
C. Women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.
D. Levels of stress were highest among adults between the age of 22 and 25.
