【題目】There is an old saying about volunteer work that goes like this: “ No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”

Today, many people volunteer their time and energy to help others. There are a lot of ways to meet other people’s needs. For example, some volunteers provide help after a disaster. Others are happy to get dirty while repairing homes or planting trees or flowers in poor neighborhoods. Young people see suffering and loneliness around them and find ways to help. And history lovers help archeologists(考古學(xué)家) search for ancient objects to help deepen our knowledge of the past.

Volunteers work in many areas around the world, including Haiti. More than two years have passed since a 7.0 earthquake shook the nation. The exact number of people who died may never be known. Thousands of survivors of the Haitian earthquakes still live in temporary(臨時(shí)的) shelters. Last year, former American President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn joined five hundred volunteers in the town of Leogane to build houses.

Organizations do not have to be large to get volunteers. An activist group in Dharamsala, India is a good example, Jodie Underhill from England arrived in northern India several years ago. She planned to volunteer for an environmental project. She could almost not believe how much rubbish was ruining some of the area’s most beautiful sights. Jodie Underhill learned about how to deal with the rubbish while taking part in other volunteer projects. But soon enough she formed her own group, Mountain Cleaners. Jodie Underhill says the work is very hard. But she praises the group’s efforts as a wonderful experience. The young Englishwoman says the Indian media started calling her “Garbage Girl”. And she says she was pleased with the name.

Do You Have the Time? In English, this question has two different meanings. The first one is “Do you know what time it is?” While commonly, this is less frequently used than the simpler question with the same meaning “What time is it?” The other is “Do you have the time (e.g. to do this or that)?” This is a very commonly asked question, whether in American, British, or Australian English. I think the response “I don’t have the time” is most commonly used year after year. 【1】

Think about how often you (and I) have used this as an explanation of why we couldn’t do something, take on a new task, help someone, visit someone, etc. Sometimes it’s a statement of fact, and sometimes it’s just an excuse. 2 However, deep down we each have a pretty clear idea of the difference. In practical terms, the lack of available time seems to be and often is a true reason for why we cannot take something on. 3 “I just don’t have the time” is too often an escape. Once we get to a certain age, when we are generally considered to be grown-ups, we are expected to have developed time management skills. In many instances, “I don’t have the time” has the same meaning as “I am not willing to make the time”. Sure, we’re all busy, but in the end, it’s a matter of which is more important.

4 It doesn’t grow on trees or fall from the sky like raindrops. You make the time as well as most of the related decisions about what is important. 5 If you don’t decide on the use of your time, the decision will be taken away from you. It’s really up to us to decide on how to balance and manage time, and that’s a challenge.

A. No one gives you the time.

B. After all, it’s so convenient as an excuse.

C. The key is what criteria you rely on to make decisions.

D. The distinction here between them is blurry (模糊不清的) and subjective.

E. Be aware it’s the world’s most common excuse, whether you speak it out or not.

F. But it does mean we need to develop a clear approach to time management.

G. Actually if we try to rearrange our time, or make a sacrifice, we can make it.

【題目】Japanese students work very hard but many are unhappy. They feel heavy pressures from their parents to do well in school. Most students are always being told by their parents to study harder so that they can have a wonderful life. Though this may be good ideas for those very bright students, it can have very bad results for many students who are not quick enough at learning.

Unfortunately, a number of students killed themselves. Others are after comfort in using drugs. Some do bad things with trouble-makers and turn to crime. Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in the exams and have disappointed their parents. Such students feel that they are less important and leave school before they have finished their study.

It is surprising that though most Japanese parents are worried about their children, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are not able to help their children and that it is the teachers’ work to help their children. To make matters worse, a lot of parents send their children to special schools called juku-cram schools. These schools are open during the evening and on weekends, and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams. They do not try to educate students in any real sense of the real world. It thus comes as a shock to realize that almost three quarters of the junior or high school population attend these cram schools.

Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bag. Child psychologists now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society. They regard the rules as being harmful to the development of each student. They believe that no sense of moral values is developed and that students are given neither guidance nor training in becoming good citizens.

1A lot of Japanese students are unhappy at school because_______.

A. they work very hard

B. they find they can't do well at school

C. they feel unimportant

D. they are under too much pressure

2Because of their failure at school, some students take drugs to .

A. kill themselves B. seek comfort

C. disappoint their parents D. make trouble

3In juku-cram schools students_________.

A. are taken good care of by the teachers

B. feel no pressure

C. are trained to pass exams

D. can learn a lot of useful things

4In ordinary Japanese schools,______________ .

A. there are strict rules

B. students feel safe

C. students can do anything

D. learning is not important

【題目】Fear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.

Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.

Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said:“Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart.”

The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr Garfinkel said, “The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus, our hearts can also affect what we see and what we don't see—and guide whether we see fear.”

To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner(掃描儀)to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a person's feeling of fear.

“We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain ‘speak’ to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear,”Dr Garfinkel said.

“We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder.”

【1】What is the finding of the study? ________.

A. Fear is a result of one's relaxed heartbeat.

B. One's heart affects how he feels fear.

C. Fear has something to do with one's health.

D. One's fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.

2The study was carried out by analyzing ________.

A. volunteers' heartbeats when they saw terrible pictures

B. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditions

C. volunteers' reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scans

D. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication

3Which of the following is closest in meaning to “mechanism” in Paragraph 6?

A. order B. treatment C. machine D. system

4This study may contribute to ________.

A. treating anxiety and stress better

B. explaining the cycle of fear and anxiety

C. finding the key to the heart-brain communication

D. understanding different fears in our hearts and heads
