Some jobs require employees to work night shifts. Working the night shifts often means better money, but that also comes negative side effects.

The human body is naturally inclined(傾向于)to work during the day and sleep at night. 1 Your body will be able to fully adjust to this new style of rest and work. However, according to the National Sleep Foundation, constant exhaustion(疲倦) may be part of the lifestyle of working the night shift.

In addition to exhaustion from working the night shift, sleep disturbances can occur, even when your body has the opportunity to get some shut-eye during the day. 2 Instead of getting a full eight hours of sleep, which is what most people need, it’s typical for night shift workers to only take a long nap after their shift.

Working night shifts can also cause social and relational problems. Because many social events happen during the evening, people who work the shift miss out on important relationship-building opportunities. 3 When husbands or wives rarely see one another or rarely go to bed together, this will affect their communication and their marriage life.

4 Exhaustion, sleep problems, personal and relational issues and other health issues, over time, can lead to depression if not taken care of properly.

5 According to the National Sleep Foundation, you can avoid these problems by working with others during your shifts, taking naps during your shifts and setting up a support group with other employees to discuss the problems you’re facing.

A. Working night shifts can help us a lot.

B. So working the night shift will take an adjustment.

C. Doctor and nurses often work night shifts to care for their patients.

D. In the long run, this can be harmful to relationships, especially marriage.

E. What’s worse, depression is likely to occur with all of these factors.

F. Of course, you can do something to reduce the side effects of working night shifts.

G. Many people have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep during daytime hours.

They Just Can't Help It

My theory is that the female brain is mainly built for empathy the ability to understand other people and that the male brain is mainly built for building systems. __【1】_ For example, women are more likely to read magazines on fashion and parenting, while men will choose magazines that feature computers and sport.

You may think that these preferences are influenced by the way people are taught to behave when they are growing up. However, this is not the case. A new study carried out at Cambridge University shows that newborn girls look longer at a face, and newborn boys look longer at a mobile. __【2】_ It has also been observed (that girls are better at noticing signs of changes in other people's feelings. Boys, however, seem to enjoy building toy towers and playing with toys which have clear functions. __【3】_ People whose jobs are in the construction industries are almost male. Math and engineering, which require high levels of systems-thinking, are also male-chosen disciplines. Why do men and women have the difference? Actually women have four times as many brain neurons (神經) that connect the right and left part of their brains. Because of it, women have a better ability to multitask than men. __【4】_ Men tend to focus on a limited number of problems at a time. They will separate themselves from problems and view tasks as independent from one another.

Some people may worry that I am suggesting one gender (性別) is better than the other, but this is not the case. My theory says that males and females differ in the kinds of things that they find easy, but that both genders have their strengths and weaknesses. __【5】_ It is not true. The study simply looks at males and females as two groups, and asks what differences exist, and why they are there.

【題目】The other day I heard a few local musicians talking:

“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.”

“I’m never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”

But, one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”

I’ve heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.

Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive or negative, they’re rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame others, and you play the role of victim, chances are you will start to as well. So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.

This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.

Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.

【題目】It’s an ordinary morning, like all the others. But instead of being woken up by the buzzing of an alarm clock, you’ll be roused by the smell of freshly made coffee, light entering your room as the curtains open automatically, and a gentle back massage(按摩)provided by your high-tech bed.

This is what a typical(典型的) person's life will be like two decades from now, according to The Guardian. Want to know more?

After you get up, your apartment will be like an electronic orchestra with you as the conductor. With simple moves of your hand and spoken instructions, you’ll be able to control your apartment’s temperature, humidity, music and lighting. You’ll be able to look through the day’s news on translucent screens while your breakfast waits for you in the automatic oven.

As you move into your kitchen, you might accidentally hit your toe on a cupboard. If you do, you’ll grab your cell phone and open the diagnostics(診斷) app. Inside your phone there will be a tiny microchip(芯片) that uses X-ray waves to scan your body. The scan will tell whether your toe is bruised or broken.

After breakfast, your driverless car will take you to work. While you “drive”, your central computer system will suggest a list of chores(家務事) that your housekeeping robots can do that day and it will also remind you to buy a gift for your mother’s upcoming birthday.

As you can see, with the help of advanced technology, our lives will be more efficient(有效率的). Technology will mitigate our forgetfulness and free us of many small burdens that distract us, such as buying a ticket. Our brain will therefore be able to focus on more important things like preparing for a presentation or doing “deep thinking”.

However, the development of technology might have some disadvantages as well. By 2036, we’ll be relying heavily on the virtual(虛擬的) world, which will mean that all of our data will be stored in the cloud, a remote digital storage system with near limitless capacity(容量). That will increase the possibility of someone else accessing, sharing or manipulating(操控) our personal information.

1What might be the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A. To stress the importance of developing technology.

B. To remind people not to depend too much on computers.

C. To introduce one new invention that will benefit our future lives.

D. To describe how advanced technologies will affect our future lives.

2According to the text, in two decades, ________.

A. you’ll be able to rely on an electronic orchestra to wake you up instead of an alarm clock

B. a tiny microchip in your phone will treat you when you are sick

C. you will be able to adjust the conditions of your apartment via oral instructions or simple hand gestures

D. technology will be smart enough to help us with important things like preparing for a presentation

3What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 6 mean?

A. Make up for. B. Worsen. C. Cure. D. Take advantage of.
