Most drinks stating that they are fruit flavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most of the rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission.

“Shoppers need to check the labels (標(biāo)簽) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content can be nonexistent,” said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. “Food production is highly competitive. __1__ It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tricked.”

Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables, or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the contents of 28 strawberry flavored products sold in stores.    __2__  Of the 11 products that did contain strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.

__3__ Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberry flavored jam was labeled as containing no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.

__4__ Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. “Describing a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is misleading.   __5__ Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread,” Tokelove said. “It's time to take measures to protect the consumers' rights.”

A.The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.

B.Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.

C.They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all.

D.If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.

E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.

F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.

G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging.

People who are outdoors in cold weather should avoid actions like suddenly lifting a heavy basket full of snow. Even walking through heavy, wet snow can strain a person’s heart.

Many people aren’t conditioned to the physical stress of outdoor activities and don’t know the dangers of being outdoors in cold weather. Those who like winter sports can suffer accidental hypothermia if they don’t make certain preparations.

Hypothermia means the body temperature has fallen below normal. It occurs when your body can’t produce enough energy to keep the internal (內(nèi)部的) body temperature warm enough. It can kill you. Heart failure causes most deaths in hypothermia.

Children, the elderly and those with heart disease are at special risk. As people age, their ability to keep a normal internal body temperature often decreases. Elderly people can suffer hypothermia without knowing they’re in danger because they can’t notice the cold conditions as quickly as the young.

Besides cold temperatures, high winds, snow and rain can also steal body heat. Wind is especially dangerous because it removes the layer of heated air from around your body. At 30 degrees Fahrenheit in a 20-mile-per-hour wind, the cooling effect is equal to calm air at four degrees. Similarly dampness (濕氣) causes the body to lose heat faster than it would at the same temperature in drier conditions.

To keep warm, wear more clothes. This traps air between layers. Also, wear a hat or head scarf. Much of your body’s heat can be lost through your head. Keep your hands and feet warm, too, as they tend to lose heat rapidly.

Don’t drink alcohol before going outdoors or when outside. Alcohol makes you feel warm at first because blood vessels in the skin expand. But heat is then drawn away from the body’s important organs.

The underlined word “strain” in Paragraph 1 means ________.

A. injure     B. warm      C. control    D. burn

What is implied in the passage about hypothermia?

A.    It means the body temperature falls rapidly.

B.    Most heart attacks are caused by it.

C.    It is not as scary as people think.

D.    It can threaten a person’s life.

Based on the passage, one of the reasons why the elderly are at special risk of suffering from hypothermia is that _______.

A.    they like exercising outside in cold mornings

B.    they can’t notice cold conditions if they are not told

C.    their body temperature is generally lower than young people’s

D.    their ability to keep a normal internal body temperature is not so good

What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

A.    What causes the body to lose heat faster.

B.    The advantages of drier conditions.

C.    What else can steal body heat.

D.    Dangers of high winds.

Which of the following is NOT a result of drinking alcohol before going outdoors?

A.    Feeling warm at first

B.    The body’s heat is taken away

C.    Blood vessels in the skin expand

D.    The risk of hypothermia is reduced

It took firemen almost an hour to cut through the wreckage (殘骸) of the car. By the time they reached the driver,Wong,he had died. Seconds before the crash happened, the traffic on the road was flowing smoothly, and Wong was an experienced driver in a sturdy car. What could have caused the tragedy? Alcohol. The water we drink and use was running short. We all have to learn what to stop wasting water. One of the steps that we should take are to find ways of reusing it. Today in the most large cities, fresh water is used only once and then it runs in waste system. But that is possible to pipe the used water to a purifying factory, there the used water can be treated with chemical materials by the workers so that it can reused. But even if every large city purified and reused it’s water, we still would have enough water.

科目:高中英語 來源: 題型:閱讀理解

[1] As adolescents(青少年), having a meaningful effect on the world can seem like an impossible task for the simple fact of being kids.  Changing the world does not only mean finding a cure for cancer, eliminating poverty, or finding the origin of humanity, but recycling a piece of paper as well. Going Green is a practical way that adolescents can have a real, meaningful influence in the world.  There are numerous options of how individuals can change their lifestyles to be more eco-conscious(有生態(tài)環(huán)保意識(shí)的). What follows are three simple ways young adolescents can go green and change the world.

1. Recycle

[2] According to a Wire & Twine online article, 63 million newspapers come out every day and of those 44 million are thrown away; recycling the Sunday newspaper alone we could save half a million trees a week.

[3] The age of technology constantly creates new phones, iPods, or new computers.  Many will stand in line for hours if not days to get their hands on the new piece of technology, but what happens with the old ones once they are replaced?  Nothing, according to Earth911 about 75% of the old devices sit in the back of a drawer collecting dust.  By taking them to the local stores that collect them, they go to poor people which in turn removes them from landfills(垃圾填埋場(chǎng)) where the phones explode because of the lead and lithium-ion(鋰離子) the phones contain.

2. Go vegetarian one day a week

[4] Instead of breaking down the pros and cons(利弊) of the vegetarian lifestyle into a long boring paragraph, here are some astonishing facts on going vegetarian for only one day.  According to Noam Mohr, a physicist at the New York University, the United States would save 100 billion gallons of water which is enough to supply all homes in New England for about 4 months.

[5] The United States would save 70 million gallons of gas which is enough to fuel all the cars of Canada and Mexico combined and still have some to spare. The United States could prevent 3 million tons of soil erosion(侵蝕), 4.5 million tons of animal wastes, and about 7 tons of ammonia emissions (氨排放). The Environmental Defense concludes with the most interesting fact: if the entire population gives up one meal of chicken, the amount of carbon dioxide accumulated would be the same amount if more than half a million cars were taken off U.S. roads.

3. 63

[6] Most drink bottled water because of the common view that bottled water is healthier than regular tap water; actually, 25% of bottled water comes from regular tap water and all that is done extra is it going through a filter(過濾器).  Tap water has higher regulations from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration美國食品藥品管理局) than bottled water does.  Companies do not need to list where they got the water from, how they purify the water, or what chemicals their plastic water bottles contain.  Plastic bottles do not get recycled 90% of the time which results in 1.5 million tons of plastic in landfills which take thousands of years to rot.  Not only are you drinking the same water as that in your house but also paying extra.  The average 24-pack of bottled water cost $3.97 at the local Wal-Mart and a reusable water bottle cost between $4.99-$7.99; just imagine how much money could be saved if reusable water bottles replaced plastic water bottles.

[7] Changing the world for a positive has to start somewhere and while it may be hard and at times it may seem as if the small changes that are being done are not affecting the world, keep in mind what Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

60. How much of the daily newspapers are thrown away according to Paragraph 2?

  A. About 44%.         B. About 63%.             C. About 70%.            D. About 75%.
