Microwaves may be great at warming up food, but what about warming people?

Using microwaves to directly heat owners of a room would save much of the energy wasted by heating walls and furniture. And despite popular ideas about microwaves, this technique would be safe, according to Charles R. Burlier of the Microwave Research Center in Marlborough, New Hampshire. Low-power microwaves only penetrate (貫穿) the skin (low-power microwave penetration in a ham is about 0.2 inches, for example) and with no negative effects.

To test this idea, Buffler subjected himself to microwaves in a special room using a standard 500-watt, 2459 MHz magnetron (磁控管). He found that a person will start to feel warmth at about 20 milliwatts per square centimeter (mw. / sq. cm. ) ; a satisfactory feeling of warmth occurs between 35 and 50mw. / sq. cm. By comparison, a person standing in noonday summer sun feels the amount of 85 mw. / sq. cm. And a frozen meat pie in your microwave oven receives about 1000 mw. / sq. cm.

In houses of the future, each room could be provided with its own magnetron, says Buffler. When you stepped into the living room, for example, a motion detector (運(yùn)動(dòng)感應(yīng)器)would turn on the magnetron, filling the room with low-power microwaves. In the same way that a microwave oven heats up a hamburger, but not the plate it’s on, you would feel warmth from the microwaves without changing the temperature of your coffee table. (You could, however, make your favorite easy chair even more comfortable by treating it with a radiation-absorbing chemical.)

While it might be some time before homeowners are comfortable enough with the idea to set up whole-body microwave heaters in houses, Buffler says microwaves may attract livestock(家畜) farmers. Lambs that are born outdoors in winter, for example, are frequently lost to cold. Microwaves could warm the lambs safely and quickly.

One of the world’s richest men has taken a close interest in one of man’s most basic functionsvisiting the toilet.Bill Gates’s charitable organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,is looking for inventors to design the loo of the future, whichthey hope, would improve sanitation for millions of people around the world.

Sowhat’s wrong with the traditional flush toilet?Firstlyit wastes a huge amount of potential drinking water.Secondly, they are more likely to cause pollution. This is a real problem in many areas of the developing worldwhere, according to United Nations estimates, unsafe sanitation causes half of all hospitalizations.Younger people are particularly at risk.Illnesses which cause diarrhea are responsible for the deaths of about 1.5 million children a year.Finallystandard lavatories simply aren’t practical in remote areas.

The challenge set by Bill Gates was to come up with a latrine which works without running water, electricity or aseptic tank.It also needed to operate for less than 5 cents.28 designs were displayed at the recent Reinvent the Toilet Fair,in Seattle,USA.Among them was one which turned human waste into electricity using microwaves, another which converted human waste into charcoal, and yet another which used urine for flushing.

But the winner was a solar?powered design which generated hydrogen gas and electricity. The team from the California Institute of Technology(CIT) picked up a prize of $100,000.

But clearly Bill Gates doesn’t feel he’s flushing money down the toilet. After the Seattle event he said,“We couldn’t be happier with the response we’ve gotten.” Gates has even pledged $370 million more to the future toilet project. They hope to field test more prototypes over the next three years.

1.Why is Bill Gates paying people to invent new toilets?

ABecause he wants to test people’s sense of creativity.

BBecause he wants to improve sanitation for many people.

CBecause he thinks the traditional ones are out of fashion.

DBecause he can’t design this kind of things himself.

2.Which of the following is NOT a problem with the traditional flush toilet?

AThey waste too much water.

BThey might cause diseases.

CThey are not always practical.

DThey are too complicated to use.

3.The underlined word “l(fā)atrine” in the third paragraph might have similar meanings to the word “________” in the text.

Aloo? Bsanitation

Cdiarrhea? Dprototype

4.The team from CIT won the prize because their design ________.

Acan change human waste into electricity

Bcan turn human waste into charcoal

Ccan produce power with solar energy

Dcan use urine for flushing

When Percy Spencer invented the microwave, it changed the world greatly. People would no longer have to wait endless hours while cooking their food in an old-fashioned oven. Instead, using the microwave has allowed them to cook food in just seconds.

According to the medical website mercola.com, just about “ninety percent of Americans have microwaves in their homes”. However, is this convenient invention as perfect as it seems?

There are many reports of microwaves changing the original qualities of the food, which can cause cancer as well as changes in the body.

“Electro-magnetic (電磁的) radiation harms food, and changes substances cooked in it to dangerous products,” Dr. Lita Lee – chemist, nutritionist, author and lecturer – wrote in her book, Health Effects of Microwave Radiation – Microwave Ovens (1991).

However, the microwave is not only for food; microwaves are used in medicine as well. For example, it warms heating pads and used to warm blood used in transfusions (輸血).

Norma Levitt, a hip surgery patient in an Oklahoma hospital (1991), died after blood being heated for her transfusion was altered in the microwave. A lawsuit followed and because of this incident, blood is no longer heated in the microwave.

Regardless of what has happened, big companies still claim that microwaves are great machines that have caused trouble to “few people” and have had “few consequences”. However, people should decide if saving a few minutes is more important than preventing cancerous cells from entering the body.

Dr. Jonathan Wright, Medical Director of Tahoma Clinic in Renton, Washington, considers the microwave unhealthy and recommends some alternatives.

“Try eating a lot of your food, like vegetables, uncooked. Ideally, at least one-third of the food in your diet should be uncooked, since this is the form that will give you the maximum amount of nutrients. If you do want to cook some food or heat up leftovers, use your stove (火爐),” he said.

These alternative cooking styles may take a little time from your day, but can help you lead a healthier and more stable lifestyle. These methods will allow you to get the most nutrients from your food, as well.

Health is not valued till sickness comes. In today’s fast-paced modern world, we should have more consideration towards peoples’ health.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來源:2010-2011學(xué)年河南省高三上學(xué)期第一次月考英語(yǔ)卷 題型:閱讀理解

“Mobile phone killed my man,” screamed one headline last year. Also came claims that an unpublished study had found that mobile phones could cause memory loss. And a British newspaper devoted its front page to a picture supposedly showing how mobile phones could heat the brain.

For anyone who uses a mobile phone, these are worrying times. But speak to the scientists whose work is the focus of these scares and you hear a different story.

One of the oddest effects comes from the now famous “memory loss” study. Alan Preece and his colleagues at the University of Bristol placed a device that imitated the microwave radiation of mobile phones to the left ear of volunteers. The volunteers were good at recalling words and pictures they had been shown on a computer screen. Preece says he still can’t comment on the effects of using a mobile phone for years on end. But he rules out the suggestion that mobile phones have an immediate effect on our cognitive(認(rèn)識(shí)的)abilities. “I’m pretty sure there is no effect on short-term memory,” he says.

Another expert, Tattersall, remarked that his latest findings have removed fears about memory loss. One result, for instance, suggests that nerve cell synapses(神經(jīng)元突觸) exposed to microwaves become more — rather than less — receptive to undergoing changes linked to memory formation.

An even happier outcome would be that microwaves turned out to be good for you. It sounds crazy, but a couple of years ago a team led by William Adey at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in California found that mice exposed to microwaves for two hours a day were less likely to develop brain tumours when given a cancer-causing chemical.

“If it doesn’t certainly cause cancer in animals and cells, then it probably isn’t going to cause cancer in humans,” says William. And while there’s still no absolute evidence that mobile phone use does damage your memories or give you cancer, the conclusion is: don’t be afraid.

1. Mobile phone users are worried because ______.

A. they are not sure whether mobile phones can cause memory loss

B. it’s said that mobile phones have a lot of side effects

C. one headline reported “Mobile phone killed my man”

D. a British newspaper showed mobile phones could heat the brain

2. According to this passage, we can know that _____.

A. the mobile phone is a most wonderful invention

B. there’s no need to worry about the radiation from mobile phones

C. something must be done to stop people using mobile phones

D. mobile phone companies shouldn’t cheat customers

3. What would be the best title for this passage? ______.

A. New Mobile Phones.                         B. Special Mobile Phones.

C. New Special Investigation: Mobile Phones.      D. New Investigation.
