【題目】Microsoft Windows XP support ends: How to update? If you’re still running Windows XP what do you do now? This doesn’t mean that computers running the operating system will stop working, but it is likely that the computer will be attacked by hackers as the company stops providing security-updates and technical support for Windows XP.

Generally speaking, you have two new choices: Buy a new computer or update to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. If you’re not ready to make a change, there are things you should do if you’ll still be on XP over the next couple of months.

Firstly, make sure the software you have is as up-to-date as possible. That means having any security fixes you can’t get from Microsoft’s website and make sure that you’ve got some (non-Microsoft) antivirus software installed(安裝) from other websites. Of course, if you want to keep really safe then you’d better stay off the web altogether, though for many users this won’t even be a choice. Another choice is to change from using an administrator account to a limited account for tasks, like checking your e-mail. This means that if a hacker attacks your computer, at least they won’t have administrator-level access.

However, we have to stress that these steps are just temporary(臨時(shí)的) measures and aren’t enough to protect your computer in the long run. Whether you’re buying a new computer or simply updating your present operating system depends on yourself. You’ll have to choose between Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Whichever you go for, you’ll need to check that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for either system. For either Windows 7 or 8.1, you’ll need at least a computer with 1GB of RAM, 1GHz processor and 160GB of hard disk space. However, to run a better operating system, you’ll need a computer with over 4GB of RAM, a 2GHZ processor and 500GB of hard disk space. Buying a new computer with these functions, you may pay more than$500.

If you’re still planning on updating, Microsoft offers some great guides on their own website, meaning that you can download your new operating system and copy all your old files without leaving your computer. Windows 7 is certainly better than Windows XP, but you should be aware that it is also an ‘old’ operating system. Microsoft Company will add more updates to Windows 8.1 over time, while Windows 7 will also come to an end before long just like XP.

【1】‘Microsoft Windows XP support ends’ means that _________.

A. the operating system of Windows XP will stop working

B. Microsoft stops providing technical support for Windows XP

C. people must install other websites’ antivirus software for Windows 7.

D. people must buy a new computer and update to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

【2】To prevent a hacker from attacking your computer, you’d better NOT_________.

A. update your computer

B. stay off the web altogether

C. use an administrator account

D. install some antivirus soft wares

【3】From the fourth paragraph, ___________is a better choice in the long run.

A. buying a new computer as Windows XP support ends

B. updating your present operating system to protect your computer

C. having a new computer with at least 1GB of RAM, 1GHz of hard disk space

D. choosing a new computer with over 4GB of RAM and 500GB of hard disk space

【4】From the passage we can conclude that __________.

A. hacker attacks will happen more often in the future

B. an operating system develops quickly as time goes by

C. a new computer will be more expensive than it used to be

D. people tend to use security fixes except Microsoft Company’s

【題目】A study of more than five million books, both fiction and non-fiction, has found a marked decline in the use of emotional words over time. The researchers form the University of Bristol used Google Ngram Viewer, a facility for finding the frequency of terms in scanned books, to search for more than 600 particular words identified as representing anger, dislike, fear, joy, sadness and surprise.

They found that almost all of the categories showed a drop in these “mood words” over time. Only in the category of fear was there an increase in usage.

“It is a steady and continuous decrease,” said Dr Alberto Acerbi. He assumed that the result might be explained by a change in the position occupied by literature, in a crowded media landscape. “One thing could be that in parallel to books the 20th century saw the start of other media. Maybe these media movies, radio, drama, had more emotional content than books.”

Although both joy and sadness followed the general downwards trend, the research, published in the journal PLOS One, found that they also exhibited another interesting behaviour:the ratio (比率) between the two varied greatly, apparently mirroring historical events.

During the Roaring Twenties the joy-to-sadness ratio reached a peak that would not occur again until before the recent financial crash. But the ratio plunged at the height of the Second World War. Nevertheless, the researchers held a reserved opinion about their claim that their result reflected wider social trends. In the paper, they even argue that the reverse could be true.

“It has been suggested, for example, that it was the suppression (壓抑) of desire in ordinary Elizabethan English life that increased demand for writing ‘filled with romance and sex’… perhaps,” they conclude, “songs and books may not reflect the real population any more than catwalk models reflect the average body.”

【1The word "decline" (paragraph 1) is closest in meaning to_________.

A. increase B. rise C. decrease D. change

【2】A study of more than five million books indicated a decrease in “mood words” over time except_______.

A. in the use of the words of historical events

B. in the category of fear

C. in the category of literature

D. in the category of joy

【3What’s the main idea of this passage?

A. A study of emotional words.

B. A study about vocabulary in literature.

C. Reasons for the use of emotional words decreases in literature.

D. A study on increase in the category of fear.

【題目】Does handwriting matter? Not very much, according to many educators. However, scientists say it is far too soon to declare handwriting is not important. New evidence suggests that the link between handwriting and educational development is deep.

Children not only learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand, but they are also better able to create ideas and remember information. In other words, it’s not only what we write that matters—but how.

A study led by Karin James, a psychologist (心理學(xué)家)at Indiana University, gave support to that view. A group of children, who had not learned to read and write, were offered a letter or a shape on a card and asked to copy it in one of three ways: draw the image on a page but with a dotted outline (虛線) , draw it on a piece of blank white paper, or type it on a computer. Then the researchers put the children in a brain scanner and showed them the image again.

It was found that when children had drawn a letter freehand without a dotted outline or a computer, the activity in three areas of the brain was increased. These three areas work actively in adults when they read and write. On the contrary, children who chose the other two ways showed no such effect. Dr. James attributes the differences to the process of free handwriting: Not only must we first plan and take action in a way but we are also likely to produce a result that is variable. Those are not necessary when we have an outline.

It’s time for educators to change their minds and pay more attention to children’s handwriting.

【1】What do scientists mean by saying “it is far too soon to declare handwriting is not important”?

A. Handwriting is not very important to children.

B. Handwriting has nothing to do with education.

C. Handwriting can not be learned in a short time.

D. Handwriting should not be ignored at present.

2What does “that view” in Para. 3 refer to?

A. Children read quickly when they write by hand.

B. Children create ideas and remember information.

C. How we write is as important as what we write.

D. A group of students should know what to write.

3Which is NOT the children’s task in the experiment?

A. Put a brain scanner and show the image again.

B. Draw the image on a piece of blank white paper.

C. Type the image directly on a computer.

D. Copy the image on a page but with a dotted outline.

4According to the passage, the author obviously giving up handwriting.
