【題目】 Sandi Patty has been a name synonymous (同義的) with Gospel music because of her singing ability since she released her first album in 1979.

Patty’s newest book. The Voice, takes a deep dive into parts of her life she’s kept private for years. Surprisingly, The Voice is not primarily concerned with Patty’s singing voice. Patty was always a talented singer. However, she struggled to find her inner voice and speak up for herself. “I was a shy kid. Words were hard for me,” Patty said.

One of the reasons why Patty found it so difficult to use her voice was a traumatic childhood experience. At age six, she was abused by a friend, an experience she opened up for the first time in the book.

She is sharing the story of her experience now, hoping it will help other people feel less alone. “Feeling alone keeps everybody silent about the tough times in our lives, so we think we’re the only ones,” Patty said. She wrote in The Voice that she felt like it was her job to make everyone feel better.

Friendships were essential for helping Patty find the courage to speak up. They reminded her that she didn’t need to make others feel better because the people she loved didn’t doubt she cared for them.

Friends and family were crucial for helping Patty confront another struggle she faced—shame. She felt unpleasant for insecurities about her weight and her divorce. “I’ve heard it explain that guilt tells us we have done something wrong and shame says we are wrong,” Patty said.

“I want people to know that their stories and their voices matter,” Patty said. “We have to figure out a way to take our pain away and put it where it needs to be, without letting it guide our lives. Pain is a part of our story. It describes us, but it doesn’t need to define us.”

【題目】 Hard work really does pay off. Scientists find that perseverance (堅(jiān)持不懈) leads to better grades and higher achievements in school.

“Being passionate (熱情的) is not enough to ensure academic success,” says researchers, who thought of “courage” as a key to success. This is also regarded as effort in reaching long-term goals, and determination to continue one's efforts in spite of hardships.

Researchers think that the finding could help create new training to help children develop the skill and help ensure their future success.

Researchers from the Academy of Finland studied more than 2,000 students from Helsinki. They were followed through their academic career from 12 to 16, the sixth grade until the ninth grade in local school years. Researchers found that the factor that best predicts courage was related to goals, with previous academic achievements playing no role in developing the skill.

Professor Katariina Salmela-Aro, who led the study, said, “Courage means a young person is really interested in his or her studies and does not give up easily. A key element of courage is high perseverance when facing difficulties and hardships. The important finding is that these factors are the key to success and well-being. Our study shows the power of courage.”

Professor Salmela-Aro also thinks it is important to develop new practices and qualities to improve courage in teenagers. She added, “Young people should see everyday school work as part of their life in a broader context and establish achievable goals for themselves. Schools must also serve as a place where it is safe to fail and learn to deal with setbacks. One must not be discouraged by setbacks, but draw strength and new energy from them!

1What can we learn about the research?

A.It takes at least three years.B.It helps students make progress.

C.It makes many discoveries.D.It follows 2,000 students abroad.

2What should students do according to the researchers?

A.Focus on former grades.B.Achieve their goals.

C.Try all their best.D.Forget sadness.

3What does the underlined word “setbacks” in Paragraph 6 mean?

A.Strengths.B.Difficulties.

C.Weaknesses.D.Efforts

4Which is the text probably taken from?

A.A picture book.B.A literature book.

【題目】 He has been called France’s youngest leader since Napoleon Bonaparte. Emmanuel Macron, age 39, swept to victory in France’s second-round of presidential election which was held on May 7, 2017. He defeated Marine Le Pen by a large margin of 62% of votes. He was inaugurated (就職) as President.

Both of Macron’s parents were doctors, and he attended one of the most prestigious (有聲望的) schools in France, Lycee Henri . From there, he became an investment banker and economy minister. Unlike the other presidential candidates, he has always worked outside of the government.

In April 2016, he created his own political movement, called En Marche! (On the Move!), recruiting (招募) more than 20,000 members. His party’s ideals were neither right-or left-winged, but more independent. As his party became more and more successful, Macron began to think about presidency, something he’d always been interested in. In November 2016, he announced his decision to run in the 2017 election.

Macron’s campaign relied on his political movement. He struggled to win votes from both parties in France, as well as from the working class. In addition, he was the only candidate that was pro-EU, or supportive of European Union.

While in office, Macron’s biggest focus will be on improving the economy. A total of 50 billion will be dedicated to job training and creating green and sustainable energy. Macron also plans to cut down on corporate taxes, improve the public education system, and lower the unemployment rate by 2.7%.

Following the election is the selection of the president’s cabinet (內(nèi)閣). The Prime Minister position was given to Edouard Philippe, mayor of Northern Le Havre. However, Macrons cabinet is surprising—one France has never seen before: a gender-balanced cabinet. Out of the 22 seats available, 11 will be taken by women and 11 will be filled by men. This percentage is much higher than other European countries.

With each change of leadership come new ideals and changes to the country. Macron needs a parliament (議會(huì)) that will support his hopes and dreams for the future of France.

1What did Macron work as before the election?

A.A manager.B.A teacher.

C.A doctor.D.A banker.

2According to the text, Macron ________.

A.founded his party for presidencyB.had no interest in politics before election

C.was on behalf of the working classD.was a supporter of EU

3What is the biggest challenge for Macron?

A.Economy.B.Politics.

C.The private education system.D.The gender discrimination.

4What is special about Macron’s cabinet?

A.Its members are all from his party.

B.It has more women members than other European countries.

C.Most of its members are men.

D.It has chosen a woman as the prime minister.
