Poverty today is a major global issue. Although there are all kinds of definitions used to explain it, in simple words, it means the inability of a person to even get his basic needs of food, shelter, clothing, safe drinking water, health and education. Poverty can be found in each and every corner of the world, although the causes may differ from country to country. Given below are the main causes of poverty in the world today.
Overpopulation is one of the main causes behind the threatening of poverty on an individual level as well as a social level. This is simple math: If there are more mouths to feed and less income, definitely much will remain poor.
Another theory which is used as an explanation for poverty is lack of education. If you look at any of the underdeveloped countries, you will find that the level of education there is very low. Lack of education means lack of employment opportunities, thus leading to unemployment coupled with poverty in the future.
Moving away from one’s own homeland to another city or country in search of employment leads to poverty too. It may take these people a lot of time to find jobs. Meanwhile, they live in bad conditions. The cost of living in the city or country is most of the time too high for them.
There may be other causes of poverty like the change in business. For example, in America, a couple of decades ago, heavy industry flourished ,which employed a lot of African-American people. But now, the focus is more on information technology and health care, both of which employ only skilled and trained people. This has led to unemployment among African-Americans.
Poverty has many ill effects on society. That’s why steps should be taken to get rid of it!

〔1〕There are many useful suggestions and pieces of advice that can help one to improve English. Here are some useful suggestions and new tips to increase one’s English language vocabulary.
〔2〕Learning English vocabulary is about much more than just learning the right words. A broad grasp of vocabulary in the English language is based on understanding important expressions and “word combinations”, which means groups of words that often or always go together.
〔3〕Learning a word will not help very much if you quickly forget it. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary. Since most words are learned from how they are used in context (上下文), the more words one is exposed to(接觸), The easier one will find English to learn . Keep a writing pad close to you. When you read, pay close attention to the word you do not know, write the word down and try to figure out its meaning from the context. Then  _______________________  in a dictionary.
〔4〕Remember that if you do not use English words that you have just learned in conversation or writing, you will forget them very quickly. So the best way to learn new words effectively is just by trying to use them in conversation and writing. Remember also that practice is the key to fluent spoken English.
〔5〕Building vocabulary is a life-long task. Remember, “In the beginning was the word.” Your future could depend on how rich your vocabulary is. It will also determine the quality of your communication.

【1】Sometime early in the next century, human beings will move into habitats on Mars. They will live there for about a year, and then will be replaced with another set of pioneers. The establishment of this base on Mars will advance our knowledge of the solar system and aid in our understanding of the earth.
【2】We already know that Mars is like the earth in many ways: general size; presence of water; length of day; range of temperatures. These similarities have caused many people to consider a century-long project: to terraform Mars. Terraforming means changing a planet’s surface so that Earth’s life forms can survive there. This concept, previously found only in science fiction is now being seriously considered by scientists.
【3】Terraforming Mars is theoretically simple: add nitrogen and oxygen to the atmosphere; pump water to the surface; and add the earth’s plants and animals in the order in which they developed on Earth. But it will take at least 300 years.
【4】Some people think that such a project is too huge for humans to accomplish, but there are very good reasons to make the attempt. The earth now contains some 7 billion people, and no one knows how many humans the earth can support. Our very existence and numbers are threatening many other species with extinction. We also have had some experience with terraforming our own planet: changing the landscape, the atmosphere and the climate. At present, we are aware of the importance of terraforming the earth as we try to control global warming, air and water pollution, and protect some natural habitats.
【5】While the future of such a project is daunting(令人生畏的), it is not impossible. Even if earth-bound societies come and go in the next 300 years, the project can continue through the work of the Mars settlers without the need for constant backing from earth.
【6】The future existence of humanity may very well depend on our ability to terraform Mars.

[1] Everyone knows how to spend money, but not many people know how to spend it wisely. When you learn to spend wisely, you are learning the art of saving money.
[2] Spending money wisely does not mean buying cheap goods. A pair of shoes that costs two hundred dollars is probably better than a pair of shoes that costs twenty dollars. How do you know which pair of shoes is better? For one thing, you can consider how long the shoes are going to last. If the pair of twohundreddollar shoes can last (for) five years, the average cost of the shoes per year is just forty dollars. Besides, the pair of shoes that costs two hundred dollars will be more comfortable than cheaper shoes. The pair of cheaper shoes may last only a few months and cause your legs to suffer. Why should you spend money buying pain and suffering? However, some shoes that last a very long time are very cheap. If you can find this kind of shoes, you are getting very good value for your money.
[3] When you spend money on junk food, you are using your money to buy sickness and early death. No matter how much the cost of the meal is, spending money on junk food is foolish. You will spend more money on medical services later on in life. Investing (投資) in your health means you can save money on medical costs. Many people, who live more than a hundred years old, live happily in the pink. They seldom suffer from serious illnesses. They are the ones who invest in their health and save money on medical costs.
[4] When you can treat any spending as an investment, that means you are spending money wisely. It will produce returns for you in the future. Whenever you need to buy something, please ask the question, “Is this an investment or just spending?”

[1]While mankind has always been seeking beauty, standards for the abstract thing have been changing constantly throughout history.
[2]Walk around an art museum and you’re likely to see lost of fat female images in the artwork, For many centuries, being thin meant that you were ugly and poor-you didn’t have enough food to eat and you spent your days working in the fields, Being full-figured, on the other hand, was a symbol of       .Today, while plenty of experts will point out that pictures of models and famous people are beautified and Barbie has an impossible-to-achieve figure, both men and women seek to be thin, sometimes through disordered eating ,unhealthy amounts of exercise and operation.
[3] Make-up is another thing to which many women today are addicted, Ancient
Egyptians, Greeks and Romans loved make-up, However, these early civilizations were exceptions to the rule, as make-up was mostly avoided in the centuries following Queen Victorna went so far as to call all make-up rulgar(粗俗的)in a public speech, and modesty was the leading beauty trend for many years, But thanks to the introduction of movies, make-up came back in a big way .Today, it is a billion-dollar industry.
[4]Though beauty might seem like a visual thing, smells also play a big role. Just imagine this: if a supermodel didn’t shower for months at a time, would we still consider her beautiful? Being clean is essential for anyone to be considered beautiful, but that would certainly surprise the generations of people who never bathed, They were concerned that wearing no clothes was immoral and the devil(魔鬼)would catch them during their bath, Now many of us can hardly go a day without taking a shower or bath, Additionally, in an effort of appearing more attractive, many of us try to smell like baby powder, flowers and fruits with the help of perfume.

[1] The air we breathe is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. For the most part, the same air is available to everyone, and everyone needs it. Some people use the air to sustain them while they sit around and feel sorry for themselves. Others breathe in the air and use the energy it provides to make a magnificent life for themselves.
[2] Opportunity is just the same. It is everywhere. Opportunity is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet opportunity alone is not enough to create success. Opportunity must be seized and acted upon in order to have value. So many people are so anxious to “get in” on a “ground floor opportunity”, as if the opportunity will do all the work. That’s impossible.
[3] Just as                                   , you need opportunity to succeed. It takes more than just breathing in the fresh air of opportunity, however. You must make use of that opportunity.’’ That’s not up to the opportunity. That’s up to you. It doesn’t matter what “floor” the opportunity is on. What matters is what you do with it.

When older honeybees take on tasks usually handled by younger bees, aging of their brains is effectively changed, a new study finds. The discovery suggests that in humans, social involvement ought to be considered
in addition to drugs as a way to treat age-related dementia(癡呆).
“We knew from previous research that when bees stay in the nest and take care of larvae—the bee babies---they remain mentally able as long as we observe them,” explained Gro Amdam, who led the research at Arizona State University. “However, after a period of nursing, bees fly out gathering food and begin aging very quickly.”
“After just two weeks, foraging(覓食的)bees have worn wings, hairless bodies, and more importantly, lose the brain function—-basically measured as the ability to learn new things,” Amdam said in a statement.
Amdam and his colleagues wanted to find out what would happen if they “asked” the foraging bees to take care of larval babies again. To find out, they removed younger nurse bees from a nest, leaving the older foraging bees to face a choice: forage or care for the larvae. Some of the older returned to searching for food, and others switched to caring for the nest and larvae. After ten days, about fifty percent of the older bees that had chosen to care for the nest and larvae had “greatly improved their ability to learn new things.”
The researchers also discovered changes in the proteins in the brains of the bees whose learning ability had improved. One of the proteins that changed, called Prx6, is also found in humans and is known to help protect against dementia.
“Maybe social involvement is something we can do today to help our brains stay younger,” Amdam says. “Since the proteins being researched in people are the same proteins bees have, these proteins may be able to respond to specific social experiences.”
Other studies have shown several non-drug methods can help improve brainpower in older people, including going for walks and taking music lessons.
The findings, announced this week, are detailed in the journal Experimental Gerontology.
