4.Why is it hard for many of us to do things for ourselves before we do for others?Maybe we believe the"good"woman sacrifices herself for her family and,increasingly,for her work."In terms of our relationships,women often feel they're responsible for everything-which is not a complete misunderstanding,"says nationally syndicated (為多家報(bào)刊供稿的)columnist and life coach Harriette Cole."We are the ones who usually lead the way.But somehow we get from there to the idea that the world won't work if we don't help it along.
Taking on responsibilities that might be well or even better handled by others is one of the ways we begin to lose our balance and slide down the slippery slope from generosity to martyrdom(殉道).Because women are likely to be the primary caretakers for husbands and children as well as for aging parents,we have ample opportunity to fall into the pattern of serving the people we love before we serve ourselves.But there are good reasons to be careful about that,"If you always put someone else first,there's a tendency for others to depreciate you,to lose respect,because respect for another comes from an understanding that that person has her own wishes,dreams,and desires,"says Ethel S.Person,MD,author of Feeling Strong:The Achievement of Authentic Power.Besides,why must there be only one person in first place at a time?"It's possible to have equal concerns for yourself and for loved ones,"says Person."There aren't always conflicting priorities."
In fact,being skilled at taking care of yourself may improve your ability to care for others; if you're not fulfilled,you're only able to see other people through your own needs.And studies suggest that not taking care of ourselves is unhealthy for those who depend on us.At the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston,researchers found that greater level of caregiver stress were associated with increased respiratory(呼吸的) problems among the babies in their charge.

D.Try to have equal concerns for themselves and their loved ones
34.Where does respect for another come from according to Ethel S.Person?B

D.Realizing that that person often copes with a dilemma of conflicting priorities.

14.There are two dangers to be guarded against in old age.One of these is undue(過度的) absorption in the past. There is no need to live in memories,in regrets for the good old days,or in sadness about friends who are dead. One's thoughts must be directed to the future, and to things about which there is something to be done.
It is unwise to be too attached to the youth in hopes of sucking vigor from their vitality (活力).When your children have grown up,they want to live their own lives, and if you continue to be as interested in them as you were when they were young.you are likely to become a burden to them, unless they are cold to you.
I think a successful old age is easier for those who have strong impersonal interests involving proper activities. It is no use telling children not to make mistakes, both because they will not believe you,and because mistakes are an essential part of education. But if you are one of those who are incapable of impersonal interests, and you only concern yourself with your children and.grandchildren, then you must realize that while you can still render them material services, such as making them an allowance, you must not expect that they will enjoy your company.
Some old people are afraid of death. But in fact the best way is to make your interests gradually wider and more impersonal. An individual human existence should be like a river-small at first, rushing passionately past rocks and over waterfalls.Gradually the river grows wider and the banks move back and in the end they become merged(混和)in the sea without any visible break.
The old man who can see life in this way will not suffer from the fear of growing old and death.
