My friend Lucy gave me a ticket for an excited film which I want to see it very much. However, I will have to take an examination tomorrow. I believe that only when you do that you should do can you make progresses in life. In my opinion, it is waste of time going to see the film right now. That’s why I decided to give up seeing the film with him and working hard at my lessons. Lucy felt this a great pity that I couldn’t see the film with her. To make her happily, I said, “Why not going to see the film the day after tomorrow instead of today?”

【題目】A young, dark haired woman appeared in the doorway.

“Good morning, children! My name is Mrs. Murray. I am replacing your regular teacher,” she said, as she wrote her name on the blackboard. “I will enjoy getting to know each of you personally, over the next few months.”

The children in the class remained silent, as this was totally unexpected.

“Come on, someone say something,” she thought nervously. The children were too quiet.

“This probably won’t last long,” she thought, smiling kindly at them. Grade Three students were normally very lively and seldom, if ever silent. “If you have problems, please come to me. I will help you.”

The children gradually began to relax, but not one of them spoke.

“How can I get them to accept me?” she wondered. Suddenly, she had an idea.

“Your first homework will be to write a new song. To make it even more exciting, challenging and fun for everyone, it must be a new love song for Valentine’s Day. The winner will be awarded a prize, at our class party.”

The children looked amazed, but pleased.

“You may sing your new song, or play it with a musical instrument.”

As if something had suddenly awakened the children, the silence in the room ended suddenly.

“A love song?” a boy asked, smiling sweetly, at his new teacher.

“We each have to write one,” said a dark haired girl, “We never had to do that before.”

“And perform it too!” a red haired boy responded, laughing aloud. “I love it! Me, sing a love song?”

“Want to know what the first prize will be?”

Immediately, every hand in the room went up.

Mrs. Murray reached into her handbag and pulled out a harmonica(口琴).

“What do you think of this?” She waited.

“I am also a music teacher, so I will be able to help you write your new love songs.” added Mrs. Murray, smiling at her new students. Obviously, her smile and intelligent idea about the homework impressed every student in the class.

1The children remained silent at the beginning because __________.

A. they missed their former teacher

B. they didn’t accept the new-comer

2We can learn from the passage that __________.

A. most children in the class were good at performing music

B. it was the prize that made the students accept their new teacher

D. the students in this class are not as active as other Grade Three students

3Which of the following words can best describe Mrs. Murray?

【題目】 You may have heard that humans only use ten percent of their brain, and that if you could unlock the rest of your brainpower, you could do so much more. You could become a super genius, or acquire psychic powers like mind reading.

This “ten-percent myth” has inspired many references in the cultural imagination. In the 2014 movie Lucy, for example, a woman develops godlike powers thanks to drugs that release the previously inaccessible 90 percent of her brain.

Contrary to the ten-percent myth, however, scientists have shown that humans use their entire brain throughout each day.

Over the years, brain scientists have shown that different parts of the brain are responsible for specific functions, whether it’s recognizing colors or problem solving. Contrary to the ten-percent myth, scientists have proven that every part of the brain is integral for our daily functioning.

Research has yet to find a brain area that is completely inactive. Even studies that measure activity at the level of single neurons(神經(jīng)元) have not revealed any inactive areas of the brain.

Many brain imaging studies that measure brain activity when a person is doing a specific task show how different parts of the brain work together. For example, while you are reading this text on your smartphone, some parts of your brain, including those responsible for vision and reading comprehension, will be more active.

A more direct counter to the ten-percent myth lies in individuals who have suffered brain damage – like through a stroke(中風(fēng))– and what they can no longer do, or do as well, as a result of that damage. If the ten percent myth is true, then damage to many parts of our brain shouldn’t affect your daily functioning. Studies have shown that damaging a very small part of the brain may have devastating consequences.

If someone experiences damage to Broca’s area(布羅卡氏區(qū)), for example, they can understand language but can’t speak fluently.

In one highly publicized case, a woman in Florida permanently lost her “capacity for thoughts, perceptions, memories, and emotions that are the very essence of being human” when a lack of oxygen destroyed half of her brain.

1What is the passage mainly about?

A.The ten percent myth is not true.

B.Brain scientists have a long way to go.

C.Human brain is much more powerful than we imagine.

D.All parts of the brain are equally important.

2Why does the writer mention the movie “Lucy”?

A.To show the power of women.

B.To introduce an interesting story.

C.To fight against the ten percent myth.

D.To show the influence of ten percent myth.

3It can be inferred that Broca’s area is responsible for ________.

A.listeningB.writingC.speakingD.reading

【題目】(題文)Make Up Your Mind to Succeed

Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because “everyone’s winner.” And their report cards sounded more positive (正面的) than ever before. As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”

Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it. Here’s how they work:

A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent (才能) is genetic – you’re a born artist, point guard, or numbers person. The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult, it’s quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.

On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible. Because the ego (自尊) isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty, it’s quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience.

We are all born with growth mind-sets. (Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise. Dweck’s book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.

【題目】 Public Health England (PHE) is targeting pizzas, ready meals, ready meat and takeaways. The government has also required the food industry to start using healthier food and encourage the public to opt for lower calorie foods.

It is all part of an effort to cut calorie (卡路里) intake by 20% by 2024. The target will point to 13 different food groups, which are equal to about a fifth of the calorie taken by children. If action is not taken, PHE said, it would be prepared to ask the government to pass laws.

PHE would be strictly monitoring progress by looking at which products people were buying and would be prepared to punish companies which do not take their duties. The government is also organizing a program encouraging adults to consume (消耗) 400 calories at breakfast and 600 each at lunch and dinner.

At present, adults consume between 200 and 300 calories more than they should each day. PHE chief nutritionist Dr Alison Redstone said the 400-600-600 tip would make it easier for “people to make healthier choices" by being able to judge what they should be eating in each sitting.

How many calories should we eat? It is suggested that women eat no more than 2,000 calories a day, while men should limit their intake to 2,500. For children, it depends on age. A four-year-old should consume no more than 1,300, while for teens aged 17 and 18, it is about 3,000, but overweight children are eating up to 500 calories more than that.

Prof Russell Viner, of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, said it was a necessary move. He said, "Over the past 40 years, there had been a slow growth in food sizes, with pizzas and hamburgers simply much bigger than they were in our parents' time." The convenience of fast food at pocket money prices and the advertisement of unhealthy food and drinks to children add to the problem.

1What does the underlined word "opt" in Paragraph 1 mean?

A.It will be punished by customers.

B.It will be forced to stop producing foods.

C.It will be punished by Public Health England.

D.It will be asked to throw away all the food.

3Which of the following people should take in the most calories?

A.Teens aged 18.B.Babies.

C.Middle-aged women.D.Old men.

4What can be inferred from the text?

A.The government has passed laws about eating healthier food.

B.PHE is concerned about the British health problems.

C.Hamburgers are not bigger than before.

D.Men should eat no more than 2,000 calories a day.
