JANE AUSTEN(1775—1817)is often regarded as the greatest of English women novelists on the strength of her six completed novels.Known particularly for their social comedy and accurate description of human relationships, they are still as widely read today as they have ever been.
The seventh child of a country priest(牧師),Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 at Steventon in Hampshire. Her father ,the Reverend George Austen, was an intelligent and sensitive man who encouraged Jane in her love of reading. From an early age she was familiar with the works of Henry Fielding,Sir Walter Scott,Richardson,F(xiàn)rances Burney and the poet George Crabbe. Her early attempts at writing include burlesques(滑稽作品)of popular romances. When her father retired in 1801 the family moved to Bath, which was later to feature in her novel Northanger Abbey(published in 1818).After his death in 1805 the family moved first to Southampton and then in 1809 to Chawton in Hampshire.where Jane Austen is known to have written her last three novels:Mansfield Park(1814),Emma(1816)and Persuasion(also published in 1818).Although her other novels were written much earlier ,it was not until 1811 that Sense and Sensibility was first published.Pride and Prejudice, which followed in1813,features Jane Austen’own favourite hero,Elizabeth Bennet.
Surrounded by her lively and warm family and wholly buried herself in her writing and housework,Jane Austen led a life often known for its lack of events. She did, however ,attract several admirers and even accepted a proposal of marriage from one admirer-only to change her mind the following morning.Jane Austen’s independent life often seems reflected in her novels, which seem to display the world in miniature(縮影).Sir Walter Scott praised Jane Austen for‘that unique touch which makes ordinary commonplace things and characters interesting’,while Somerset Maugham claimed that she had at her command ‘the most precious gift a novelist can possess’s that of keeping the reader’s interest.Jane Austen died in 1817.

BERLIN (Reuters)—Germany’s postal service has announced plans to explore improved service and help protect the environment by getting “fetch friends”—ordinary people traveling across cities—to deliver parcels on their way.
It is hoped that the move, which will be tested in the coming months, might lessen traffic in inner cities and reduce CO2 emissions(排放). This should help DHL, a division of the German postal service, reach its target of improving the company’s carbon efficiency by 30 percent before 2020.
“As the world’s biggest logistics(物流) provider, we recognize a special responsibility to reduce the impact on the environment as much as possible,” said Frank Appel, Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Post DHL, in a statement referring to a variety of measures being considered.
The “fetch friends” find out online about parcels that need delivering to people who live or work along the way that they are planning to travel through the city. They then select the ones that they want to take.
Codes(編碼) sent to their mobile phones tell the volunteers where to pick the packages up. Parcels can be taken part of the way or passed on to another volunteer but all volunteers need to have the right code on their mobile phone so the track and trace system can be updated.
Logistics companies will be responsible for looking after the operation to make sure that the privacy of post is respected.
It’s hoped that this could be done using mobile phones but DHL says it recognizes that some security issues remain to be worked out.

I was now in my twenty third year of residence in this island and was accustomed to the place and to the manner of living. If it had not been the savages(野人)who had come to the place to disturb me, I could have been content to spent the rest of my time there, even to the last moment, till I had laid me down and died, like the old goat in the cave.
I had also arrived to some little recreations and amusements, which made the time pass more pleasantly with me a great deal than it did before.
At first, I had taught my Poll to speak. And he did it so familiarly and talked so clearly and plain that it was very pleasant to me. And he lived with me no less than twenty six years. How long he might live afterwards, I don’t know; though I know they have an idea in Brazil that they live a hundred years. Perhaps poor Poll may be alive there still, calling Poor Robin Crusoe to this day. I wish no other English man had the bad luck to go there and hear him. But if he did, he would certainly believe it was the devil(魔鬼).
My dog was a very pleasant and loving companion to me, for no less than sixteen years of my time, and then died of mere old age.
As for my cats, they multiplied to that degree that I had to shoot several of them at first to keep them from eating up all I had.
Besides these, I had two more parrots which talked pretty well and would all call Robin Crusoe, but none like my first. Nor indeed did I take the pains with any of them that I had done with him.
I had also several sea-fowls, whose names I don’t know, that I caught upon the shore and cut their wings. And the little stakes which I had planted before my castle wall being now grown up to a good thick bush, these fowls all lived among these low trees and bred there, which was very agreeable to me; so that as I said above, I began to be well content with the life I led if not worried about the threat from the savages.
小題1:What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Robin Crusoe treated animals kindly.
B.Robin Crusoe led a hard life on the island.
C.The animals raised by Robin Crusoe brought him much pleasure.
D.The savages always spoiled Robin Crusoe’s happy life.
小題2:How many parrots did Robin Crusoe mention in this passage?
A.2B.3C.4D.5
小題3:According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A.Robin’s dog may be still alive on the island.
B.Robin Crusoe lived in harmony with savages.
C.Robin Crusoe met an English man while on the island.
D.Parrots raised by Robin could talk very well.
小題4:What is the “sea-fowl” mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.A bird living on the coast.
B.A fish living in the sea.
C.A creature without a name
D.An animal feeding on tree leaves.

It is Sunday and lunch has, as usual, come to a hurried end.My wife and I are still sitting at the table. My wife likes to be        in the life of her child, but I sometimes fear she is in too deep. She has        the morning on an online student forum, asking questions about UCAS        Dick.
“A lot of people haven’t had any offers yet,” she says. “I said I already had one.”
“Wait,” Dick says. “Are you        to be me?”
“No, I have my own login details now,” she says.
“How do you know he isn’t his own mother pretending to be him?” Dick says.
Earlier, when we all sat down to lunch, Dick, who had been to parties the        evening, came back.
“Who were there?” my wife asks Dick. “What was it like?”
“It was OK.” he says.
“Not good enough,” she says. “What was the worst thing        happened?” My wife’s continued question        a deepening, boring silence. I start to eat faster. There is a long, highly        pause in the conversation.
“So,” she says       , “was it a kissing party?”
“Oh my God!” shouts Dick,        his fork. “What is wrong with you? Why are you like this?”
Surrounded by further scolds, lunch comes to a hurried end. Dick finds himself        with clearing up.       , the running of water and the sound of washing plates are the only sounds in the room.
at any time you’re prepared to apologize for being rude,” she says, “you can go and finish watching the football.”
“Are you joking?” he shouts. “No way! Why        I apologize to you?”
He pauses to look into the bottom of a pan, and a smile        across his face. “What I mean is, I’m really very sorry,” he says, dropping the pan into the sink and running from the room. “Bye!”
“You don’t have to worry,” my wife says. “In a       ’s time, you’ll be 18 and I won’t be able to do this to you any more.”
“Really?” he says.
“You’ll be a(n)       ,” she says.
The boy stops to consider the blue print that after a        set seven days from then on, his parents will be        to stop ruining his life. He looks both doubtful and a little alarmed.
I approaches my wife, whispering to her. “Dear, I agree with you—understanding and trust may        be a good way to communicate with our teen children.”
