【題目】Studies show that you may be lied to every day anywhere from 10 to 200 times. We say, “Nice song.” “Honey, you don’t look fat in that, no.” But another study showed that strangers lied three times within the first 10 minutes of meeting each other. We lie more to strangers than we lie to coworkers. Men lie eight times more about themselves than they do about other people. Women lie more to protect other people. If you’re married, you’re going to lie to your wife/ husband in one out of every 10 communications. If you’re unmarried, that number drops to three. But look, if at some point you got lied to, it’s because you agreed to get lied to. Truth about lying: lying’s a cooperative act. Not all lies are harmful. Sometimes we’re willing to get lied to for social dignity(尊嚴(yán)), maybe to keep a private secret.

Lying is complex. It exists in our daily and business lives. We’re deeply disturbed by the truth. We explain it, sometimesfor very good reasons, other times just because we don’t understand the gaps between ideals and realities in our lives. We’re against lying, but secretly we’re for it in ways that our society has practiced for centuries and centuries. It’s as old as breathing. It’s part of our culture and history. Think the stories fromDante, Shakespeare, the Bible, News of the World.

Lying has great value to the evolution of human beings. Researchers have long known that the more intelligent the species, the more likely it is to lie. We humans like to become leaders. It starts really early. How early? Well, babies will pretend to cry, pause, wait to see who’s coming and then go right back to crying. One-year-olds learn hiding truth. Five-year-olds lie outright and try to control through flattery (奉承). Nine-year-olds, masters of covering up.

So what do we do about lies? Well, there are steps we can take to guide our way through the bushes. Trained lie spotters (檢測員) get to the truth 90% of the time. The rest of us, we’re only 54% right. There are clever liars and stupid liars, but there’re no real creative liars. While lying, we all make the same mistakes, and we all use the same techniques.

【題目】At times my mom has been uncomfortable seeing these qualities in me. For example, when I was 12, I went to Puerto Rico all by myself to stay with my grandmother for the summer. My mom was extremely nervous about it. She kept telling me how things were different in Puerto Rico, to always put on sunscreen, not to wander away from my grandmother, and other warnings. She helped me pack and did not leave the airport until she saw my plane take off.

But despite her worries, she let me go on my own. As I moved into my teens, she continued to give me space to grow and learn even when it might have been difficult for her. When I reached my senior year, I decided to move away for college. Once again I found that I differed from my peers: while many of them wanted to stay close to home, I couldn't wait to be out in the world on my own. While my mom may not have been happy at the thought of me going away, she was supportive and excited for me.

One big thing I realized during my senior year, as my mom granted me more freedom, was that she actually believes in me and trusts me. That means a lot. Most of my life, and especially when I was little, the main person I tried to impress in my schoolwork or other things was my mother. I knew she expected nothing but the best from me. Sometimes it was hard to live up to her standards; getting a single B on my report card would make me feel bad because I knew she wanted me to have all A’s.

I know that her high standards have helped me stay focused on what's important, like education, and made me who I am. I am thankful for her support and involvement in my life. Most of all I respect her. She is the strongest woman I know and that's why I have turned out so strong and independent.

1When the author decided to go to Puerto Rico, his mother .

A. wanted to go with him B. worried about his safety

C. didn’t allow him to go D. asked his grandmother for advice

2The author decided to move away for college to .

A. be different from his peers B. keep away from his mother

C. be independent in outside world D. make his mother unhappy

3We can learn from the third paragraph that the author’s mother .

A. had a high expectation from him B. was too strict with him

C. used to expect nothing from him D. cared little about his learning

4In the passage, the author mainly wants to tell us .

A. his long way to becoming independent

B. his good relationship with his mother

C. his mother’s deep love for him

D. the importance of a mother’s trust and support

【題目】A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off(打瞌睡)—if it is milked from a cow at night.

Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety(焦慮).The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder(奶粉) made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.

Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.

While the effect of cow milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who have trouble falling asleep at night.

【題目】A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man--the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort.

This attitude toward manual (體力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪華地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the near- by bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.

【1From Paragraph 1 , we can know that in America

A. people tend to have a high opinion of the self--made man

B. people can always rise to the top through their own efforts

C. college professors win great respect from common workers

D. people feel painful to mention their fathers as laborers

【2According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because

A. servants in America are hard to get

B. she takes pride in what she can do herself

C. she can hardly afford servants

D. it is easy to prepare a meal with canned food

【3】The expression "wait on table" in the second paragraph means

A. work in a furniture shop

B. keep accounts for a bar

C. wait to lay the table

D. serve customers in a restaurant

【4Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?

A. A Respectable Self--made Family

B. American Attitude toward Manual Labor

C. Characteristics of American Culture

D. The Development of Manual Labor
