About ten years ago when I was an undergraduate in college. I was working as a practice student at my University's Museum of Natural History. One day while working at the cash register in the gift shop, I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in a wheelchair.
As I looked closer at this girl, I saw that she was kind of set on her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and main body. She was wearing a little white dress with red dots.
As the couple wheeled her up to me, I was looking down at the register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink(眨眼). As I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the cutest(可愛(ài)的), largest smile I have ever seen.
All of a sudden her handicap (殘疾)was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melted me and  gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about. She took me from a poor, unhappy college student and brought me into her world--- a world of smiles, love and warmth.
That was ten years ago. I'm a successful business person now and whenever I feel down and think about the troubles of the world, I think about that little girl and the remarkable lesson about life that she taught me.

Making friends can be difficult, especially these days with so much peer pressure(同齡人之間的壓力). If you want to develop a more pleasing personality and make friends, become  genuinely(真誠(chéng)地) interested in other people. Show kindness. You may be wearing the latest  designer label clothes, the hottest brand shoes, and the coolest jewelry, but if you display sourness  and selfishness, you'll have a battle ahead of you to make good friends.Smile, smile and continue to smile. It costs nothing, enriches those who receive it, and  happens in a flash but the memory lasts forever, it creates happiness in the home and classroom. A smile can not be bought, begged or borrowed; it comes from the heart. If you want other people to   like you, make the other person feel important - and do it sincerely!Choose your friends carefully. If others try to persuade you to smoke, take illegal drugs, steal, gamble, fight etc. dare to say NO. Doing the wrong thing is the quickest way to lose friends, especially honest, good and upright friends.
Being mentally strong is not always easy, but let me assure you that the more you practice it,__________. Soon those who thought they were trendy will want to dress like you, talk like  you and be with you, because you have a personality which is different. People like being different!By being an individual with your own personality, you can achieve the very best experiences in   your life.
You may not ever have many friends, but let me tell you that it is better to have one good  friend than ten dishonest friends who will stab(傷害)you in the back at the very first opportunity  that arises.

Close your eyes and imagine you are living in the next two centuries or more. You’ll be living in a world filled with smart robots, which will be helping you to take care of your children, or your elderly parents in your home. You’ll live much longer thanks to the medicine made by genetic (基因的) science. And mankind may be going farther in space than ever before ––you will be living on the moon or Mars.
How should we view the changes that wait for us in the future? Should we be optimistic about the years ahead, or worried about what the future holds? Some scientists and experts are having a discussion about how technology, science and society will develop in the future.
“I’m looking forward to the day when more technology will come to my life,” says John Searle, a professor at the University of California Berkeley Philosophy, “because I think further research in such areas as genetics, physics, chemistry and medicine will help us to overcome poverty, improve health, and
make life longer.”
Hugh Herr, at MIT’s Biomechatronics Group, considers very powerful weapons (武器) as concern (擔(dān)心) over the future. Another is the growing role of technology in our lives. “Machines taking over what humans do is not a good thing,” Herr says.
That is a similar concern shared by Daniela Cerqui, a social and cultural scientist. “I am afraid that the long-term future we are building will have no space left for human beings,” says Cerqui. “The main values of our society are related to information that must progress as quickly as possible, and computers are much better than humans in these tasks.”
60. The first paragraph mainly tells us ________.
A. how science will develop in the next two centuries
B. how people will live in a modern society
C. what life would be like in the future
D. what computers will bring to our society
61. What is John Searle’s attitude towards the future of technology?
A. Worried.    B. Optimistic.   C. Uncertain.   D. Disappointed.
62. The underlined word “That” in the last paragraph refers to______.
A. the poverty problem in the future
B. machines taking over what humans do
C. the technology of weapons
D. the health problem of humans
63. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The future––full of hope or concern?
B. Great changes will take place in the future
C. The relationship between technology and humans
D. The role of robots and computers in the future

There was once a captain who loved money so much that he cheated his sailors at the end of every voyage and took their wages.
On the last day of one voyage, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors, “ If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages.(工資)”
The sailors had heard about the captain’ cheating, so they didn’t trust him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. 科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

There was room for all of us, and the sleeping bags kept the night coldness away. We would listen to the sound of the river, and hear the coyotes (土狼) howling along the hills not far away.
Those were the cool summer nights of the mid-nineties in Southern Alberta, Canada, when the four children were young and we would lie on the trampoline (蹦床) in the backyard late at night, for the sun would not set till late in July and August. We would look at the stars up above and never grow tired of it.
These were the times when I would tell the stories of my own childhood and teach the kids life’s lessons that have been remembered to this day. I chuckle (輕聲地笑), as I recall the time when we heard a coyote not far away, and then I started a story about a bear approaching the trampoline. The bear came close (in the story), and the kids snuggled up to mom and me, until suddenly I’d let out a howl and grab all the kids and they would be frightened and jump up and then all laugh, “Daddy, you scared us!”
Now the children are in their mid and late teens, but they fondly remember the starry nights on that trampoline. Recently my oldest daughter on her wedding day sang a song for her parents, entitled “I’ll always be your little girl”. She wrote the music and words and yes indeed: it included a memory of those starry nights.
I have learned as a parent that one of the greatest gifts we can give our children as they are growing up is the time to tell them stories, or if telling stories is not that simple, perhaps read them a story. They can read their own books, but telling or reading them a story will create a close relationship with pleasant memories such as those late summer nights under the starry sky.
56. The passage is mainly about _____.
A. coyotes’ effects on children         B. the relationship between children
C. the author’s unforgettable experiences    D. the author’s memories of starry nights
57. The underlined part “snuggled up” probably means _____.
A. lay down     B. got close     C. gave in        D. struggled forward
58. How do the children feel about their childhood?
A. Very enjoyable. B. A bit regretful.     C. Rather busy.       D. Sort of dull.
59. In the last paragraph, the writer mainly wants to express _____.
A. it is easy to tell stories to children     B. kids should read stories themselves
C. it is important to tell or read stories to kids
D. it’s necessary to spend summer nights with kids

Long ago, near the village of Hedley, there lived a strange and playful trickster(騙子), known as the Hedley Kow. Sometimes it looked like an ordinary object. Sometimes it looked like a donkey or a goat.
One evening, as an old woman went along the path, she saw an old iron pot lying in the ditch. “Fancy that.”she said. “Nobody seems to want this old pot. I will take it home and plant pretty flowers in it.”
When she tried to lift it, she saw that it was full of gold pieces. “Well, now, if that doesn’t beat all,” she said. “I’m rich! I can buy a fine house and fancy cloths.”
The pot was heavy, so she tied her shawl around it and began to drag it home. After a while, she stopped to rest. When she looked in the pot, she was amazed to see that it was full of silver pieces!
“Oh, my!” she said. “Aren’t I the lucky one! If it were gold, thieves would have been after me. My friends might have been jealous. But I can hide these silver pieces, take out a few at a time, and live like a queen.”

“Fancy that!” said the old woman. “I believe I have seen the Hedley kow! Not many folks can say that, and that’s a fact. I’ll just sit up by my fire tonight thinking about how lucky. I was to see it for myself. I truly must be the luckiest person in the world!”
