Challenges of life are of great importance in our grow. It reminds me my days when I joined in the military training after I entered senior high school. It was the first time I have lived away from my home, so I found it difficultly to fit in. And the training officer was strict with myself. I once thought I couldn’t be stick to the end. But anyway, I made it. The trials made it easy for me to adapt to my future life, but the difficulties I came across have now become the precious memory in my life.
In short, learning to regard the challenges of life as a stepping stone to future success and make the best of them.

In a time when ivory poaching(偷獵)has gotten so bad that it threatens to wipe out several animal species,a young Dutch designer is creating "egalitarian(平等主義)jewelry" made of our very own ivory—teeth.
Lucie Majerus got the idea for her "human ivory" collection after having her wisdom teeth removed. She kept them and soon realized they would make great material for a jewelry collection."Why wouldn't we value our own material instead of the precious material from other species? And what if we mine our own ivory and turn it into pearls?"she asks.
Her own teeth became a ring, but in order to create a whole collection, she needed more material, and since having more of her teeth removed wasn't a very pleasant choice, she asked her dentist to save his patient's unwanted teeth. Most people choose not to keep their pulled teeth,so they are usually donated to dentistry schools.Majerus also received the lost teeth of two of-her teachers at Design Academy Eindhoven,so she had a nice supply of human ivory to experiment with.
To turn human teeth into attractive pieces of jewelry,Lucie Majerus first bleaches(漂白)them, and then uses a stone polishing machine to shape the teeth into various shapes.

Most people realize that fast food isn't the healthiest or best?tasting cuisine(菜肴). It is, however, expected to be fast.
Many chains like McDonald's have struggled with slower food delivery in recent years, because there are more items on the menu. But the world's largest restaurant chain, which serves 68 million customers daily in 119 countries, is trying to change that.
For several months, McDonald's has been testing what's called the “just?for?you experience”. In 200 U S restaurants (and more than 2,000 across the globe), customers are able to order directly from a self?serve kiosk(售貨亭), after which an employee brings the meal directly to the table.
McDonald's chief executive Steve Easterbrook, speaking at a McDonald's in New York's Tribeca neighbourhood on Thursday, said the company has long expected customers to adapt to its business model of ordering at the counter and then waiting to collect their own food. Now, he said, “We're adapting our business around customers.”
It showed that “test runs at more than 500 restaurants…showed an increase in foot traffic and contributed to a mid?single?digit percentage increase in restaurant sales, lifting the 5 to 6 average check by 1, on average.” Customer satisfaction scores also increased, “because families, in particular, appreciate having their food brought to them.”The company also announced the beginning of a new mobile order?and?pay app, which would allow customers to order and pay for food from their smart phones.
Mike, a common customer, said, “As a father of two small children, I'm every fast?food chain's target customer. My wife and I try to avoid McDonald's when possible, but like many parents we end up going. I've used the self?serve kiosks and like them a lot: they're easy to use, reduce the pressure of making a choice with impatient customers behind you, and make a big difference in delivery time. I just hope they don't start expecting me to tip.”

University graduates Mallorie Brodie and Lauren Hasegawa, who invented a smartphone app that tracks construction defects for commercial builders, had a tiger by the tail.
Bridgit, which they founded in 2012, launched a cloud-based communications platform that helped manage defects on construction sites, which can delay projects and result in costly repairs if left unchecked. The smartphone application lets site supervisors take photos of cracks or damaged paint, share them with employees and track the problems to solution.
More than 600 subcontractors used the pilot version in many building sites before the commercial version, called Closeout, officially launched.
Feedback(反饋)was so good that they began to wonder: Why limit their invention to a specific industry? Why not turn it into some kind of a handy tool for consumers too? This became their dilemma. In other words, should they stay the course or look for wider applications of their app?
The experts polled all agreed Bridgit should stay focused on its original goal. Ms. Hasegawa and Ms. Brodie took that advice.
As more business customers signed on, it became clear that they made the right decision. Since then, the company’s growth has been rapid.
Earlier this year, Bridgit launched Closeout, which is designed so that even the least tech-savvy can use it easily. Today, the app is being used on sites across Canada and the United States and even by top general contractors.
In October, Bridgit was named to the Canadian Innovation Exchange’s top 20 list of Canada’s most innovative (創(chuàng)新的) companies working in digital media and information and communication technology .
But Ms. Hasegawa and Ms. Brodie are not resting on their glories. They have also been collecting feedback on Closeout from customers, and they’ll launch a new version in the spring. It will target not only general contractors but developers and building owners, too.
1.What does the underlined word "defects" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Style. B. Process.
C. Drawback. D. Material.
2.What did the two graduates decide to do when the pilot version was well received?
A. Turn to the ordinary consumer market.
B. Look for wider applications of their app.
C. Turn it into a widely-used tool for consumers.
D. Continue centering on the development in construction industry.
3.Who could be their potential customers?
A. Smartphone users. B. Architects.
C. Computer programmers. D. Photographers.
4.Which of the following might be the best title?

A British friend told me he couldn’t understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds as a snack so much “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth; I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometime even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every household was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room , a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready-made dumping fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds.
Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat be-fore the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem.
It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it’s a delicacy, and it’s connected to their culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition.
1.What did the writer become aware of?
A. She had ever typed a report about seeds.
B. She are various snacks while watching TV.
C. She had a habit of cracking sunflower seeds.
D. She damaged her teeth by eating sunflower seeds.
2.What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year?
A. The traditions of celebrating it disappear.
B. Children can eat delicious food on that day
C. The families get together for it.
D. Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.
3.The writer’s to Denmark’s way of eating bread is______.
A. acceptable B. critical
C. neutral D. doubtful
4.What lesson can we learn from the story?
A. One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.
B. Eating habits come from a certain culture.
C. It is good to form healthy eating habits.
D. Changing your eating habits will change your life.
