16.No one knows why we sleep,but it's certain that we need to.People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effects after a few days-they think less clearly,and they fall asleep during the working hours; some may have hallucinations(幻覺).
There are no rules about sleep.Generally speaking,grown-ups sleep about 7and a half hours each night and probably more than 60per cent get between seven and eight hours.But perhaps eight per cent are quite happy with 5hours or less,and four per cent or so find that they want ten hours or more.If you feel all right,you're probably getting enough sleep.The important thing is not to worry how much other people get-their needs may be different.Exercise doesn't seem to increase the need for sleep-office workers,for example,sleep for about as long as people doing physically active work.
Children sleep more than grown-ups-perhaps 14to 18hours soon after birth,going down to grown-up levels by early teenage.Sleep patterns also tend(傾向) to be different in the elderly,who may sleep less at night than they did when younger,find sleep getting more broken,and often make it a rule to sleep during the daytime.

解答 67-70 CBDA
67題答案:C考查細(xì)節(jié)推理,根據(jù)第一段的People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effects after a few days-they think less clearly…(沒能休息的人幾天后開始遭受一些明顯的影響--他們思考不清晰…)可知本題答案為C選項.
68題答案:B考查細(xì)節(jié)推理,根據(jù)第二段的Generally speaking,grown-ups sleep about 7and a half hours each night and probably more than 60per cent get between seven and eight hours.(總的來數(shù),成年人睡眠時間大約為每晚7.5小時而且還有可能超過60%的人睡眠在7-8個小時之間).可知本題答案為B選項.
69題答案:D考查細(xì)節(jié)推理,根據(jù)第一段的they think less clearly,and they fall asleep during the working hours; some may have hallucinations(幻覺).
Children sleep more than grown-ups-perhaps 14to 18hours soon after birth,going down to grown-up levels by early teenage.出生后孩子的睡眠時間要長于成人--長達(dá)14-18個小時,等到他們青年早期(13-15歲左右)時睡眠時間降到了成人水平.故本題答案為A選項.

7.An allowance(零花錢) is an important tool for teaching kids how to make plans for the use of money,save and make their own decisions.Children remember and learn from mistakes when their own dollars are lost or spent foolishly.
How large an allowance is suitable?Experts say there is not right amount.Actual amounts differ from region to region,and from family to family.
To set an suitable allowance for your child,work up a weekly plan.Allow for entertainment costs such as movies and snacks.Next,include everyday expenses such as lunch money,bus fare,school supplies."If you make the child responsible for these bills',"says Josephine Swanson,a consumer specialist,"he or she will learn to plan for necessary costs."
Finally,add some extra money to make saving possible.If you can keep your child's allowance in line with that of his friends.A child whose buying power falls away below his peers'can feel left out.
It can be tough,but don't excuse your children when they make a mistake with their allowance.When Brooke Stephens was ten and growing up in Jacksonville,her mother gave her﹩5aweek,﹩1.75of which was for bus fare and lunch."If you lose your money,"Brooke's mother told her,"you walk home."
One week the girl spent all her allowance in a candy store,then she called home for a ride."Mom made me walk home,"recalls Stephens,now a financial planner in Brooklyn."At first I was angry.But I finally realized that she was trying to teach me an important lesson."
Experts advise that an allowance should not be tied directly to a child's daily housework at home.Kids should help around the house not because they get paid for it but because they share responsibilities as members of a family.You might,however,pay a child for doing extra jobs at home,which can develop his or her early habits.

66、Which of the following is the possible title of the passage?C
A.How to develop a child's early habits.
B.How to work up an amount of pocket money.
C.How to teach a child about money.
D.How to teach a child to save money.
67、It can be inferred from the passage that if a child is given an allowance,he or she mayC.
A.spend all the money very soon              B.fall into the bad habit of wasting money
C.feel responsible and careful about money   D.lose the money and can not return home
68、In Paragraph 4,the words"his peers"refer toB.
A.his parents              B.his friends
C.his financial experts    D.his teachers
69、Why does the writer mention Brooke Stephens?C
A.To question the opinion about pocket money.
B.To compare Stephens with other financial experts.
C.To explain that parents should be strict when children are developing good habits about money.
D.To suggest pocket money is useless in developing a child's sense of responsibility.
70、The writer implies in the passage thatC.
A.children may feel lonely if they have no pocket money
B.a(chǎn) child's early good habits can be developed if he or she is paid for all the housework
C.paying children for their housework is no good

1.The USA is a land of immigrants.Between 1815and 1914,the world witnessed the greatest peaceful migration in its history:35million people,mostly Europeans,left their homelands to start new lives in America.Why did these people risk everything by leaving their homes and families?
First,what forced emigrants to make the decision to leave?One major cause for European farmers to leave was the rise in population which in turn led to land hunger.Another was politics.There was an increased taxation(稅收) and the growth of armies,and many young men fled eastern Europe to avoid being forced to join the army.
Physical hunger provided another pressing reason.Following the collapse (衰退)of the economy of southern Italy in the 1860s,hundreds of thousands decided to start a new life in America.Religion also encouraged millions to leave the Old World.
In short,people chose to leave their homes for social,economic and religious reasons.As a result,by 1890among a total population of 63million,there were more than nine million foreign-born Americans.
But what were the attractions?First of all,there was the promise of land which was so scarce in Europe.Next,factories were calling for workers,and pay conditions were much better than back home.Men were needed to open up the West and build the long railroads,and new towns needed settlers to live in and to develop business.There was the space for religious people to practice their faith in peace.
This immigration meant that by around the 1850s Americans of non-English had started to be more than those of English.As we know,there were losers.To start with,there were those unwilling immigrants,the slaves who had been used as a source of cheap labour.Nor should we forget the equally unlucky American Indians.By 1860there were 27million free whites,four million slaves and a mere 488,000free blacks.
Nowadays,the USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land.As always,it remains an attractive place to those who think it will offer them a second chance.

31.What is not the cause for people to leave their homeland?B

34.What is the topic of this passage?B

8."There is nothing either good or bad,but thinking makes it so."-William Shakespeare,Hamlet. One of the greatest sources of unhappiness,in my experience,is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.
When we see something we don't like,we wish it could be different-we cry out for something better. That may be human nature,or perhaps it's something that's ingrained in our culture.
An example:in my recent article,A Beautiful Method to Find Peace of Mind, quite a few people thought my view was too negative because I said you should expect people to mess up,expect things to go differently than you planned, and that you should accept that willingly.
It's too negative to expect things to go wrong, they said. However,it's only negative if you see it as negative,if you judge it as bad.Instead, you could accept it as the way the world works-as the way things actually are.And try to understand why that is,and embrace it as it is.Accept these things as they are,and try to understand why they're that way.
Does it mean you can never change things and make this world a better place? Not at all.But not because the world is full of misery, but because that's the path you choose to take, because you enjoy that path and the process of change.
Try a different approach:accept, and understand. It might lead to some interesting results.

A.the world is full of misery              B.they enjoy the process of change

5.A"talking kitchen"teaches students how to cook French food and speak French at the same time.Researchers at New Castle University in the United Kingdom have developed the French Digital Kitchen.Professor Paul Seed House and Patrick Olivier led the project.Professor House tells us that it works like a satellite navigation(導(dǎo)航) system in a car, which direct us how to get to your destination.
The kitchen equipment and tools use motion sensor(動作傳感器) technology. The sensors help a computer guide the students through instructions in French.
This is how the system works. The system can tell whether you've done what you were asked to do or not.For example, the system tells you to take some butter and cut it with a knife. There's a sensor on the package containing the butter so it can tell where the butter's being moved. The sensor in the knife not only knows that the knife is moving, but it also knows what motion the knife is making. So it can know whether the knife is cutting or not.And it doesn't go on to the next step of the program unless you've done what it sense you've done.
Students can ask the computer to repeat the instructions or translate them into English. There are vocabulary lessons before and after the cooking.
Professor House says the French Digital Kitchen turns the process of learning language into a real-life experience."Here you're taking itout of the classroom and you're actually using the language to produce something that you can eat at the end of it.It's very enjoyable."
The system could be available for sale by the end of 2013.Adding the technology to a new kitchen could add about ten to twenty percent to the building costs. The researchers have also been given money to develop programs in six other languages, including English,Italian and Spanish.
