Melissa Poe was 9 years old when she began a campaign for a cleaner environment by writing a letter to the then President Bush. Through her on efforts, her letter was reproduced on over 250 donated billboards (廣告牌)across the country.
The response to her request for help was so huge that Poe established Kids For A Cleaner Environment (Kids F.A.C.E.) in 1989. There are now 300,000 members of Kids F.A.C.E. worldwide and it is the world’s largest youth environmental organization.
Poe has also asked the National Park Service to carry out a “Children’s Forest” project in every national park. In 1992, she was invited one of only six children in the world to speak at the Earth Summit in Brazil as part of the Voices of the future Program. In 1993, she was given a Caring Award for her efforts by the Caring Institute.
Since the organization started, Kids F.A.C.E. members have distributed and planted over 1 million trees! Ongoing tree-planting projects include Kids’ Yards — the creation of backyard wildlife habitats (棲息地) and now Kids F.A.C.E. is involved in the exciting Odyssey, which is a great way to start helping.

Global warming threatens to hold back human progress, and make unachievable all UN targets to reduce poverty, according to some of the world’s leading international and development groups.
In a report published today, Oxfam, Greenpeace, Christian Aid, Friends of the Earth, WWF and 15 other groups say rich governments must immediately address climate change to avoid even “unbearable levels” of worldwide poverty.
“Food production, water supplies, public health and people’s living environment are already being damaged,” the report says. “The world must meet its promise to achieve poverty reduction and also deal with climate change.”
The report, which draws on UN predictions of the effects of climate change in poor countries over the next 50 years, says poor countries will experience more flooding, declining food production, more disease and the worsening or disappearing of entire ecosystems(生態(tài)系統(tǒng))on which many of the world’s poorest people depend.
“Climate change needs to be addressed now. The poor will bear the burden of it. The frontline experience of many of us working in international development indicates that communities are having to fight against more extreme weather conditions.”
Climate change will play havoc(浩劫)with agriculture and water supplies and will increase diseases. “By 2025 the proportion of the world’s population living in countries of great water stress will almost double, to 6 billion people. Tropical and sub-tropical areas will be hardest hit — those countries already suffering from food shortage”.
Poor countries mostly do not need high-tech solutions, but would most benefit from education, research and being shown how to farm better. The report says unchecked global warming, more than wars or political confusion, will displace millions of people and destabilize (不安定) many countries.
9. ________ should play a leading role in resisting the more extreme weather conditions according to the report.
A. International groups        B. Poor countries
C. Rich countries              D. Tropical and sub-tropical countries
10. Which of the following is not the effect of global warming according to the report?
A. More natural disasters and starvation.  B. Increasing the world’s population.
C. Making millions of people move to other places.
D. Shaking the foundation of a country.
11. Which of the following is not true according to the text?
A. Poverty and climate change are closely linked.
B. More and more people will suffer from the water stress and food shortage.
C. What the poor countries need badly is high technology.
D. International communities have to take steps to resist the bad climate.
12. What is the best title of the passage?
A. International Development Brings in Climate Change
B. Global Warming Is a Bigger Threat to Poor
C. International Groups Work Together to Reduce Poverty
D. Worldwide Poverty Shall Be Avoided

Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways.   1  Second, your notes are excellent materials to refer to when you are studying for a test. Third, note-taking offers variety to your study time and helps you to hold your interest.
You will want to take notes during classroom discussions and while reading a textbook or doing research for a report.   2  whenever or however you take notes, keep in mind that note-taking is a selective process.   3
The following methods may work best for you.
· Read the text quickly to find the main facts and ideas in it.
· Carefully read the text and watch for words that can show main points and supporting facts.
· Write your notes in your own words.
·  4
· Note any questions or ideas you may have about what was said or written.
As you take notes, you may want to use your own shorthand(速記). When you do, be sure that you understand your symbols and that you use them all the time.   5
Use words, not complete sentences.
There are three practical note-taking methods.
You must write your notes on separate paper.
Otherwise, you may not be able to read your notes later.
You will also want to develop your own method for taking notes.
That means you must first decide what is important enough to include in your notes.
First, the simple act of writing something down makes it easier for you to understand and remember it.

Have you ever noticed the colour of the water in a river or stream after a heavy rainfall? What do you think caused this change in colour? It is soil that has been washed into the river from the riverbank or from t}le nearby fields.
Components of Soft
Soil is made up of a number of layers(層),each having its own distinctive colour and texture. The upper layer is known as the litter. It acts like a blanket.limiting temperature changes and reducing water loss. The topsoil layer is made up of small particles of rock mixed with rotten plant and animal matter called humus(腐殖質(zhì)),which is black and gives the topsoil its dark colour. This layer is usually rich in nutrients, oxygen, and water.Below the topsoil is the subsoil,a layer that contains more stones mixed with only small amounts of organic matter. This layer is lighter in colour because of the lack of humus.Beneath the soil lies a layer of bedrock.
Soil forms from the bottom up.Over time bedrock is attacked by rain, wind, frost, and snow.It is gradually broken down into smaller particles in a process called weathering.Plants begin to grow, and rotten materials enrich the topsoil. Most of the soil in Eastern Canada.for example. Was formed from weathered rock that was exposed when the ice disappeared l2.000 years ag0.
Water Beneath the Soil
Surface water collects and flows above the ground in lakes.ponds.a(chǎn)nd rivers.Once in the soil or rock,it is called groundwater.Gravity pulls groundwater through the soil in a process called percolation(滲透).Eventually the water reaches a layer called the water table.Under this is bedrock through which water cannot percolate.
As water percolates downward,it dissolves organic matter and minerals from the soil and carries them to deeper layers. This causes a serious problem because plants require these nutrients for growth.
Soil pH
Soil can be acidic.neutral.or basic. The pH of the soil is determined by the nature of the rock
from which it was formed.a(chǎn)nd by the nature of t}le plants that grow and rot in it.
The acidity of rain and snow can lower the pH of the groundwater that enters the soil.By burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gasoline, humans have been contributing to higher levels of acidity in many soils. When fossil fuels are burned.gases are released into the air and then fall back to earth as acid rain.Acid soil increases出e problem of carrying nutrients to lower soil levels. As nutrients are removed, soil is less fertile.Plants grow more slowly in acidic soil, and also become easily attacked by diseases.
小題1:The layer of soil that provides necessary nutrients for plant growth is called.
A.1itterB.topsoilC.humusD.subsoil
小題2:According to the text.which of the following is NOT true?
A.Soil forms from weathered rock on the earth surface.
B.The deeper layer of soil is darker in colour than t}le surface soil.
C.Air pollution is partially responsible for acid soil.
D.Groundwater tends to carry away nutrients for plant growth.
小題3:We can infer from the passage that the water table lies      .
A.between the topsoil layer and the subsoil layer
B.in the subsoil layer above bedrock
C.between the subsoil layer and bedrock
D.in the bedrock layer beneath the subsoil
小題4:The underlined word “dissolve” is used to express the idea that organic matter and minerals from soil are         .
A.rushed away into the river
B.cleaned and purified by water
C.destroyed and carried away by water
D.mixed with water and become part of it

Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best. For example, to absorb heat from the sun to heat water, you need large, flat, black surfaces. One way to do that is to build those surfaces specially, on the roofs of buildings. But why go to all that trouble when cities are full of black surfaces already, in the form of asphalt (柏油) roads?
Ten years ago, this thought came into the mind of Arian de Bondt, a Dutch engineer. He finally persuaded his boss to follow it up. The result is that their building is now heated in winter and cooled in summer by a system that relies on the surface of the road outside.
The heat-collector is a system of connected water pipes. Most of them ran from one side of the street to the other, just under the asphalt road. Some, however, dive deep into the ground.
When the street surface gets hot in summer, water pumped through the pipes picks up this heat and takes it underground through one of the diving pipes. At a depth of 100 metres lies a natural aquifer (蓄水層) into which several heat exchangers (交換器) have been built. The hot water from the street runs through these exchangers, warning the ground-water, before returning to the surface through another pipe. The aquifer is thus used as a heat store.
In winter, the working system is changed slightly. Water is pumped through the heat exchangers to pick up the heat stored during summer. This water goes into the building and is used to warm the place up. After performing that task, it is pumped under the asphalt and its remaining heat keeps the road free of snow and ice.
小題1:Which of the following is true according to the first two paragraphs?
A.Arian de Bondt got his idea from his boss.
B.Large, flat, black surfaces need to be built in cities.
C.The Dutch engineer’s system has been widely used.
D.Heat can also be collected from asphalt roads.
小題2:For what purpose are the diving pipes used?
A.To absorb heat from the sun.B.To store heat for future use.
C.To turn solar energy into heat energy.D.To carry heat down below the surface.
小題3:From the last paragraph we can learn that __
A.some pipes have to be re-arranged in winter
B.the system can do more than warming up the building
C.the exchangers will pick up heat from the street surface
D.less heat may be collected in winter than in summer
小題4:What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?
A.What we shall do if the system goes wrong.
B.What we shall do if there are no asphalt roads.
C.How the system cools the building in summer.
D.How the system collects heat in spring and autumn

India has many festivals, with some celebrations that last for weeks. However, none of them come even close to Holi, India’s most colorful and fun festival. Celebrated on the day following the full moon, this year’s festival happens to be on March 19th.
As with most Indian festivals, this one also has many different folk stories. Most of them center around the success of good over evil. The most popular one is about a king, who hates his son Prahlada for loving the creator of the Universe—Lord Vishnu. When every attempt to stop him fails, his sister, Holika believed to be immune(免疫的) to fire, joins in the effort by inviting the young boy to sit with her inside a huge fire. Helped by the power of Lord Vishnu, Prahlada escapes safely, while the evil Holika is burned to death. To remember this event, huge outdoor fires are lit in the night before Holi in order to clean the air of evil spirits and to celebrate the death of the evil.
So what’s so great about this day? While there are some fun parades(游行) and folk songs and dance performances, the most fun of all is walking to the streets and splashing(潑灑) people with water guns and dry colors and even covering them with entire buckets of colored water. On this day, everybody is fair game, no matter how old or how young.
At about midday, the splashing comes to an end and people living close to oceans or rivers usually take a bath in the water to clean themselves before going home to a delicious home-made big dinner and a well-deserved short sleep, following this full day of fun and activities.

Who is your role model? Normally the answer to this question would be anyone around you who you find truly inspiring. It could also be someone like J. K. Rowling or Martin Luther King. Jr. , who have proven to be strong and intelligent people.
However, in today’s world, stars are regarded as role models along with the heroes listed above, despite their intentions or actions. Teens attempt to imitate their actions for two major reasons. Firstly, to be fashionable and accepted by popular culture, and secondly because stars’ actions are so well documented by the media that it seems to grab our attention and turns it to following stars’ lives. Much of the reports about stars is shocking and exhibits bad morals or lifestyles that aren’t right for teenagers. In addition, almost everything stars do is described beyond truth to make a shocking story by taking it to the next level.
However, teens must take responsibility for their actions. We can’t always blame stars for influencing us. Only you have control over yourself and only you choose to do something. Our bodies and actions are in the hands of no one else.
Now, who ever said stars are role models? Whether they choose to be or not, stars set examples as soon as they step into the spotlight. With reporters following and recording every move they make, it is impossible not to be watched and then be imitated. These people influence teens whether or not they want to. Why should someone who doesn’t want to be setting an example set one? So,should we look up to them or to people who are true and good role models? It’s our responsibility as teens to know right from wrong, and it’s time for us to take responsibility for our actions. In doing so,we will lean toward those inspiring people that want to be setting an example, and follow in their steps to be like them.
