【題目】Last night’s meteor (流星) shower left many people in the community dissatisfied and demanding answers. According to Gabe Rothschild, Emerald Valley’s mayor, people gathered in the suburbs of the city, carrying heavy telescopes, expecting to watch the brightly burning meteors passing through the sky. What they found instead was a sky so brightened by the city’s lights that it darkened the light of the meteors passing overhead.
“My family was so frustrated,” admitted town resident Duane Cosby, “We wanted to make this an unforgettable family outing, but it turned out to be a huge disappointment.”
Astronomers---scientists who study stars and planets----have been complaining about this problem for decades. They say that light pollution prevents them from seeing objects in the sky that they could see quite easily in the past. They call on people and the government to take measures to fight against it.
There is yet a population besides professional and amateur star observers that suffers even more from light pollution. This population consists of birds, bats frogs, snakes, etc. For example, outdoor lighting severely affects migrating (遷徙的) birds. According to the International Dark-Sky Association, “100 million birds a year throughout North America die in crashes with lighted buildings and towers.”
Countless more animals casualties(傷亡)result from the use of artificial lighting. Clearly, people enjoy the benefits of lighting their evenings, but some scientists think it can be harmful for humans, too. They worry that exposure to light while sleeping can increase person’s chances of getting cancer.
Emerald Valley is only one community that is becoming aware of the negative effects of light pollution. For years, Flagstaff, Arizona, has enforced lighting regulations in its city in order to assist astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. Similar efforts have been made worldwide, and a movement is underway to remind us to turn off lights when we are not using them, so that other creatures can share the night.

【題目】The temperature of the sun is over 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit at the surface, but it rises to perhaps more than 16 million degrees at the center. The sun is so much hotter than the earth that matter can exist only as a gas, except at the core(核心). In the core of the sun, the pressures are so great against the gases that, despite the high temperature, there may be a small solid core. However, no one really knows, since the center of the sun can never be directly observed.
Solar astronomers do know that the sun is divided into five layers or zones. Starting at the outside and going down into the sun, the zones are the corona, chromosphere, photosphere, convection zone and finally the core. The first three zones are regarded as the sun’s atmosphere. But since the sun has no solid surface, it is hard to tell where the atmosphere ends and the main body of the sun begins.
The sun’s outermost layer begins about 10,000 miles above the visible surface and goes outward for millions of miles. This is the only part of the sun that can be seen during an eclipse (日食) such as the one in February 1979. At any other time, the corona can be seen only when special instruments are used on cameras and telescopes to shut out the glare(刺眼的強(qiáng)光)of the sun’s rays.
The corona is a brilliant, pearly white, filmy light, about as bright as the full moon. Its beautiful rays are a sensational sight during an eclipse. The corona’s rays flash out in a brilliant fan that has wispy spikelike (一束束穗狀) rays near the sun’s north and south poles. The corona is thickest at the sun’s equator.
The corona rays are made up of gases streaming outward at tremendous speeds and reaching a temperature of more than 2 million degrees Fahrenheit. The rays of gas thin out as they reach the space around the planets. By the time the sun’s corona rays reach the earth, they are weak and invisible.
【1】Matter on the sun can exist only in the form of gas because of the sun’s ______.
A. size B. age
C. location D. temperature
【2】With what topic is the second paragraph mainly concerned?
A. How the sun evolved.
B. The structure of the sun.
C. Why scientists study the sun.
D. The distance of the sun from the planets.
【3】All of the following are parts of the sun’ s atmosphere EXCEPT the _______.
A. corona B. chromosphere
C. photosphere D. core
【4】The paragraph following the passage most likely discusses which of the following?
A. The remaining layers of the sun.
B. The evolution of the sun to its present form.
C. The eclipse of February 1979.
D. Scientists will cost more money on researching the corona.

Advertising
We live in a world of advertising. Advertising is any means of bringing information to the public. 【1】 What is being presented to the public is usually a product or service, such as a car or camera. Yet it may also be an idea, as in “Vote for Jones”, or an event, as in “Watch the World Series on this channel tomorrow!” Without advertising, people would have a difficult time knowing where goods could be bought or even certain goods or services existed.
Advertising began with town criers in ancient Greece, who called out the name of items available in the market. 【2】 The first printed ads appeared in England in 1480, and newspaper ads began in 1648. In the twentieth century extensive new fields for advertising opened up with the invention of radio and television.
【3】 Fro example, radio and television ads are costly. But they reach a vast audience. This makes them worthwhile and cost-effective for the advertisers. Newspaper ads can feature coupons(贈券) or information that can be clipped and saved. Magazines often appeal directly to special groups, such as sports fans or teenagers. Other forms of advertising include direct mail, e-mail, billboards…
【4】 For the most part, they hire qualified agencies to create their advertising. An advertising agency plans a company’s ads. It also does research. It surveys the market and tests different approaches to determine the most effective way to sell the greatest amount of the product.
How can we be sure that an ad is accurate? Two government agencies, the Federal Trade Commission and the Food and Drug Administration, check ads against false claims. The Postal Service watches for fraudulent(欺騙性的) ads sent by mail. State and local governments also have watchdog agencies. 【5】
A. Its purpose is to sell something.
B. Printed ads are found in newspapers and magazines.
C. Ancient Egyptians carved announcements on stones.
D. Do business owners themselves think up all those ads?
E. Advertisers who trick the public face heavy fines or other punishment.
F. Advertisers use whichever means, or media they think will work best for them.
G. Advertising developed with the rise of mass production in the late 19th century.
