小題1: C
解析 作者的感悟“...work was about more than ____ and making a sale.”
小題2: A
解析 根據(jù)下文“His shoes were scuffed(磨損) and his one shoelace was torn. The little boy looked poor...”
解析 根據(jù)下文“...the dimple(酒窩) in his cheek stood out...”
小題7: A
解析 根據(jù)下文“The boy said he was looking for...”

take one’s time從容進行,不著急。
解析 根據(jù)下文“In his hand lay only 27 cents.”
小題15: A
解析 根據(jù)下文“Dad said as he made the sale.”
小題18: A
ring in one’s ears在耳邊回響。
小題19:C
解析 根據(jù)第二段中的“...his one shoelace was torn.”

Don’t Wait Until Flowers Fade
Each spring brings a new blossom of wildflowers in the ditches (路溝) along the highway I travel daily to work.
There is one       blue flower that has always       my eye. I’ve noticed that it blooms only in the morning hours, and the afternoon sun is too warm       it. Every day for approximately two weeks, I see those beautiful      .
This spring, I started a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the       window while doing the dishes and see the flowers. I’ve often thought that those lovely blue flowers from the ditch would look       in that bed alongside       wildflowers.
Everyday I drove       the flowers thinking, “I’ll stop on my way home and dig them.” “Gee, I don’t want to get my good clothes       ...” Whatever the reason, I never stopped to dig them. My husband       gave me a folding shovel(鐵鍬) one year to be used for that      purpose.
One day on my way home from work, I was       to see that the highway department had moved the ditches and the pretty blue flowers were gone. I thought to myself, “Way to go, you       too long. You       it when you first saw them blooming this spring.”
A week ago we were shocked and saddened to learn that my oldest sister-in-law has a terminal brain tumor(腦瘤晚期). She is 20 years older than my husband and      , because of age and distance, we haven’t been as      as we all would have liked.
I couldn’t help but see the       between the pretty blue flowers and the     between my husband’s sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time left to plant some valuable       that will bloom every year for us.
And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I'll stop and       them to my wildflower garden

Would you jump off the Great Wall of China for 300 pounds a day?
A stunt (特技表演)person is a man or woman who does all the dangerous bits of acting work in films or on TV. This can be anything from a simple fall into a swimming pool, or walking off the top of a tall building. It sounds like a job that you would have to be made to try, but there are actually lots of people who want to do it.
Sarah France, twenty-four, is one of Britain’s sixteen professional stunt women ---there are one hundred and sixty stunt men in the country. We asked Sarah how she came to be a stunt woman.
“When I was young I was trained to be a dancer, and for seven years after school I was hardly out of work. A dancer’s life is pretty short, though, and my father suggested I should think about doing stunt work after I’d given up dancing. I thought about it for the next two years and decided to have a go. For six months, I worked really hard every day. I had to learn different skills---swimming, jumping, horse -riding, etc.”
Sarah finished the course in just five months and applied to the office which decides whether you’re accepted as a professional stunt person or not. Two weeks after she was accepted, Sarah was throwing off the Great Wall of China in Superman IV.
“I was very lucky to get work so quickly. I had a small part, playing a traveler who fell off the Wall after an earthquake. The traveler’s life was saved by Superman, of course! Actually, I fell forty-five feet into a pile of cardboard boxes! You can’t use anything softer than that or you will be brought back into view of the cinema. Instead you just have to learn to fall properly. It’s quite dangerous but I enjoy it.”

My husband Jeff and I moved into our new home in Scottsbluff last year just before Christmas. I did not have the        or energy to carry out my traditional Christmas decorating and baking activities. What was the point, anyway? It was going to be a        Christmas after all.

Apparently the doorbell wasn’t working in the cold snowy weather and we had        a visit from the Browns, our across-the-street neighbors, who brought us a Christmas card and more Christmas cookies.
The        feelings brought by these thoughtful gestures lasted longer than the food.
As Jeff and I were clearing pre-Christmas        from our driveway, Ernie Guzman came over from next door to        us to dig out.
Then, we received an invitation to        a Christmas Eve meal with our neighbors, Ernie and Nancy Sommer, and their       —a 90-year-old lady, who also had no family in the immediate area with whom to spend the holiday.
Our Christmas Eve was quite merry, thanks to our       . Our Christmas morning        was special, thanks to the Smiths’ gift of bread. I was so       for these gestures of welcome, especially during the holidays.

My first full-time job after high school was selling vacation packages via the telephone for a well-known company. One day, I was put through to a man who sounded a bit out of breath. I started with my normal pitch (音高), expecting to hear the normal reply —"I don’t want any."
Instead, he spoke in a faint, weak voice and told me how he wished to take a vacation I was offering, but he couldn’t because he was dying of illness. He explained how he was lacking in oxygen then, and it took almost all his energy to answer the call. He asked if I smoked, which I did, and begged me to stop. He told me smoking was what was killing him. He told me to spend every day with my loved ones, and tell them how much I love them. At this point, I couldn’t control myself. We ended the call, but I held on my phone to prevent another call coming in so I could collect myself.
I wrote down his name and address, and sent him a card appreciating his advice and praying for him and his family. Shortly after, I received a letter from Frank, along with a picture of him and his wife. We continued to write back and forth over the next few months, and became very fond of each other. He was old enough to be my grandfather, and in many ways, I felt as if he was.
About a year later I received a letter from his wife. When I started to read, tears came to my eyes. She told me how Frank’s battle with the disease had finally come to an end, and he passed away shortly before the Christmas. She wanted to thank me for the letters to Frank, and explained how Frank touched many lives over the years. At his funeral, to show just that, they read the 1st letter I had written to Frank to show how he affected a 19-year-old he’d never met.

I was very sympathetic with world leaders burdened with resolving conflicts between nations. When my three children were young, in most days it was hard to keep my house from becoming a war zone. It got worse as they grew older. Three years ago, Zack, then 16, couldn’t make it through a day without playing tricks on his sisters, Alex and Taryn, then 11 and 9.
My husband and I tried to understand his adolescent moodiness. We begged, reasoned, punished, and left heartfelt notes on his bed about how his behavior was hurting our family. His response was a shrug and “I say it because it’s true”.
I even tried telling the girls to fight back. But it was a bad idea. Now I had three kids at war. At wit’s end, I poured my heart out to my sister in an e-mail. She wrote back, “Don’t e-mail me. E-mail him.”
Our son was online every day, mailing and instantly messaging his friends. So what if I was within shouting distance? Maybe he would actually hear me this way. There’d be no yelling or door slamming(猛然關閉). Zack wouldn’t feel under attack. And with a few simple keystrokes, he could respond. Or not. Zack didn’t reply for days. When he finally did, his entire message was four words. I expected the worst, but then smiled when I read them, ”You are right. I’m sorry.” The kids still fought, of course, but Zack scaled back the abuse (惡習). Best of all, I now have an effective way to communicate with not one but three easily annoyed teens. They don’t tune me out as much. They don’t like to listen to me nag (嘮叨) .Or as Alex says, “You’re so much nicer online.”
All I know is that the house is quiet, and we’re talking. In fact, Taryn just instantly messaged me from upstairs. It’s time to take her to softball practice.
