Mark Thompson, the BBC’s director general, is expected to announce on Thursday that the BBC will quit its entire west London home -- possibly selling the land to Chelsea football club -- as part of main plans that will see more staff moved out of the capital to Salford and elsewhere.

The move is at the heart of the BBC’s long-awaiting cost-cutting strategy(策略)which will see nearly 2,000 more jobs going at the public broadcaster, and some original programming, such as daytime shows on BBC2, eliminated to save money.

Several thousand people are employed at the west London sites, including Thompson himself and the bosses of all the BBC’s television channels. The employees are expected to be relocated(重新安排)to Broadcasting House in central London, Salford, or elsewhere.

The BBC has been broadcasting at various locations in the Shepherd’s Bush area since moving into Lime Grove in 1949.It then switched to the Television Centre in 1960,and more modern offices at nearby White City. But it is now open to selling the site, and the broadcaster has had talks about attracting Premier League clubs Chelsea or Queen’s Park Rangers as buyers. Both clubs are looking for new homes.

Earlier leaks(透露)suggest that the BBC will seek to cut spending on sports where the corporation has already decided to share coverage of Formula 1 with Sky TV -- and imports, such as Mad Men and The Killing.BBC4 is expected to focus on “arts and archive(檔案)”, but Thompson has long ruled out closing any channels or radio stations.BBC1 and Radio 4 will be protected, but there are expected to be some cuts to local radio programs, which will see stations share shows outside breakfast and drive-time hours.

The corporation is already committed to remove TV Centre by 2015, but because parts of the building are listed, the football clubs have expressed an interest in the BBC’s White City offices instead, which could be knocked down. The White City building is where Thompson and the broadcaster's commercial division, BBC Worldwide, are based.

BBC sources say the 2,500 job losses being proposed(提議)include the 650 cuts to the World Service already announced, with up to l,000 coming from BBC News.It is understood that some staff who have only just made the move to Salford could see their jobs at risk. Salford is now home to Radio5 Live, children’s programs such as Blue Peter, and sports output including Match of the Day.

1.Why is the BBC planning to quit its west London home?

D. The BBC has to cut down its cost.

2.The underlined word “eliminated” in the second paragraph means“_________”.

A. Some original programmes will be adjusted.

B. All the BBC staff will have to work outside London.

C. More people will be employed for new programs.

D. Some TV channels or radio stations will be closed.

4.From the passage,we can learn that ________.

A. the BBC will cover Formula 1 on its own as usual

B. the football clubs are likely to buy some of the BBC’s offices

C. the BBC’s commercial division will be open to selling the sites

We are naturally drawn to friends and colleagues with familiar voices, scientists have found.People prefer those who have a similar accent, intonation and tone of voice to themselves , they discovered.

Previous research has focused on how masculine or feminine a voice sounds.Men with deeper voices and women with slightly higher voices were thought to sound more attractive, because they suggest a bigger or a smaller body.

But the new study,published by a linguistics(語(yǔ)言學(xué))expert in Canada,suggests there is a

more complex mechanism(機(jī)制)at play.Dr Molly Babel, from the University of British Columbia in Canada, said,“The voice is an amazingly flexible(靈活的)tool that we use to construct our identity.Very few things in our voices are changeless,so we felt that our preferences had to be about more than a person’s shape and size.’’

She recorded 30 volunteers’ voices and asked each to rate the others’ attractiveness on a scale of one to nine. Each participant was from western America, with similar accents. The people we assessed were all in the same dialect group, but they showed that dialect to different degrees.

“We seem to like people who sound like we sound,we like people who fit within what we know,”Dr Babel said. She also found that breathy voices in women-typified by the famous American actress Marilyn Monroe-were seen as more attractive.

The breathy tone, caused by younger and thinner vocal cords(聲帶),implied youthfulness

and health A creaky voice, suggesting a person has a cold,is tired or smokes, was seen as unattractive. The participants preferred men who spoke with a shorter average word length and deeper voices.

The linguist, whose work is published in the journal PLOS One,said,“Once you’re outside of a certain range of familiarity, novel and exotic sounding voices might become more attractive. We also have to keep in mind we find some accents more preferable than others because of social fixed ideas.”

1.In terms of voice preferences, the new findings highlight_______.

A.body size and shape B.shorter word length

C.thicker vocal cords D.the same social groups

2.Dr. Molly Babel mentions Marilyn Monroe in order to________.

A.evaluate a creaky voice

B.explain her new findings

C.challenge previous research

D.promote the actress’s reputation

3.According to the passage, who would most probably have a creaky voice?

A.An old lady with a silvery voice.

B.A young lady with a thin voice.

C.A deep-voiced man with a dry throat.

D.A little man with a quiet and gentle voice.

4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.People favor familiar accents when in a new place.

B.People might have a preference for different accents.

C.Voice preferences have no link to long-held belief.

D.Voice preferences are influenced by sex differences.

5.The main purpose of the passage is to________.

A.encourage men to use shorter words and talk less

B.inform readers of the findings of voices

C.a(chǎn)rgue against women’s breathy way of speaking

D.compare male voices with female voices
