Doctors are known to be terrible pilots. They don’t listen because they already know it all. I was lucky: I became a pilot in 1970, almost ten years before I graduated from medical school. I didn’t realize then, but becoming a pilot makes me a better surgeon. I loved flying. As I flew bigger, faster planes, and in worse weather, I learned about crew resource management(機(jī)組資源管理), or CRM, a new idea to make flying safer. It means that crew members should listen and speak up for a good result, regardless of positions.

I first read about CRM in 1980. Not long after that, an attending doctor and I were flying in bad weather. The controller had us turn too late to get our landing ready. The attending doctor was flying; I was safety pilot. He was so busy because of the bad turn, he had forgotten to put the landing gear(起落架)down. He was a better pilot — and my boss — so it felt unusual to speak up. But I had to: Our lives were in danger. I put aside my uneasiness and said, “We need to put the landing gear down now!” That was my first real lesson in the power of CRM, and I’ve used it in the operating room ever since.

CRM requires that the pilot/surgeon encourage others to speak up. It further requires that when opinions are from the opposite, the doctor doesn’t overreact, which might prevent fellow doctors from voicing opinions again. So when I’m in the operating room, I ask for ideas and help from others. Sometimes they’re not willing to speak up. But I hope that if I continue to encourage them, someday someone will keep me from “l(fā)anding gear up”.

A. They like flying by themselves.

B. They are unwilling to take advice.

2.The author deepened his understanding of the power of CRM when________.

A. he saved the plane by speaking up

B. he was in charge of a flying task

C. his boss landed the plane too late

D. his boss operated on a patient

3.In the last paragraph “l(fā)anding gear up” probably means ________.

A. following flying requirements

B. overreacting to different opinions

C. listening to what fellow doctors say

D. making a mistake that may cost lives

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. CRM:A New Way to Make Flying Safe

B. Flying Makes Me a Better Doctor

C. The Making of a Good Pilot

The Rockford police chief and some city officials want to install video cameras in all 100 police cars. They think this will reduce the number of lawsuits(訴訟) against the city. In the last five years, Rockford has paid out more than five million dollars to settle about 40 lawsuits.

The chief said, “If cameras had been in those cars, we wouldn’t have had to pay one penny. We’re always pulling over drunks or drug users who try to fight the policemen or shoot them. Then they always say that the police started beating them first or started shooting at them first. What nonsense!”

The cost of installing cameras will be about $500 per car. The city council(委員會(huì)) will vote on the plan next Monday. Ten of the 13 council members, when asked about the plan, said that they liked the idea. One member said that it made good financial sense and common sense. If the cameras are supported, they can be installed in all the cars within six weeks.

The police officers gladly support camera use. One officer said that too many people thought the police were liars; cameras would show citizens that the police told the truth.

Citizen reaction to the idea of police car cameras is mixed. One person said that the police should have started doing this years ago when video cameras were invented. But an elderly man said that cameras were against privacy. “These police are trying to stick their nose into everything,” he said. He was going to attend the council meeting to fight the plan. He hoped that other citizens would join him.

3.What are the public’s attitudes towards the plan?

A. They will attend the council meeting.

B. They strongly support the elderly man.

C. They hold different opinions about it.

D. They think highly of video cameras.

4.What would be the best title for this passage?

A. Cameras in Police Cars.

B. A Plan Against the City.

C. All the Citizens, United!

D. Shooting at the Police.

Different colours can affect us in many different ways, according to Verity Allen. In her new series ‘ Colour me Healthy’, Verity looks at the ways that colours can influence how hard we work and the choices we make. They can even change our emotions and influence how healthy we are.

“Have you ever noticed how people always use the same colours for the same things ?” says Verity. “ Our toothpaste is always white or blue or maybe red. It’s never green. For some reason we consider green products as being a bit unacceptable. It’s the same for businesses. We respect a company writing its name in blue or black, but we don’t respect one that uses pink or orange. People designing new products can use these ideas to influence what we buy.”

During the four-part series, Verity studies eight different colours, two colours in each programme. She meets people who work in all aspects(方面) of the colour industry, from people designing food packets(小包), to people naming the colours of lipsticks(口紅). Some of the people she meets clearly have very little scientific knowledge to support their ideas, such as the American “ Colour Doctor” who believes that serious diseases can be treated by the use of coloured lights. However, she also interviews real scientists who are studying the effects of green and red lights on mice, with some surprising results.

In a word, it’s an interesting show, and anyone who watches it will probably find out something new. But because Verity goes out of her way to be polite to everyone she meets on the series, it’s up to the viewers to make their own decisions about how much they should believe.
