How to Win a High School Election
If you plan on running for student office, you want to know how to win a high school election. 1. You need to consider the following key elements (要素) of an election.
* Learn About Your School .
Before you can be an official for your class, you will need to know about your class and the school as a whole. You can’t make a difference if you don’t know what to change. 2.
* 3.
If you want to make changes to some of the rules in the school’s policy, you will have to get on the administration’s good side. Ask to join in on meetings with school officials. It’s also a good idea to get to know some of the parents of the students who will vote for you. You can do this by attending PTA meetings. While at these meetings, don’t be a passive attendee. Ask questions and voice your opinion so you stand out.
* Get to know your voters.
4. And try to make good first impressions on them. Be careful, though. You don’t want to seem fake (假裝的) because then people won’t vote for you. Simply say hello and let people know you are running for whatever office you choose. If they seem interested in you, continue the conversation. If not, back off. Being pushy is another thing that will lose your votes.
Let yourself shine
Just as confidence is essential during your presentation, it’s also important every day. 5. Have fun with your election because students want someone who is real and friendly.
A.Stand tall, smile, and be friendly.
B.Meet as many high school students as possible.
C.Get involved before winning the election
D.Get started on how to win a high school election.
E.Write a speech about what you would like to see change.
F.Read the student guidebook about the history as well as present rules for the school.
G.Putting up posters and relying on your popularity isn’t enough to guarantee you a win.

Chopsticks
Right now, millions of people are digging into their food with two sticks that have school the test of time as a utensil(烹調(diào)用具)for humans. But what’s so special about them? 1.Personally, I think they teach us the importance of:
2.
If you’re ever tried using them, you know that you can’t get what you want by just randomly stabbing at the plate. To be able to get what you want, you have to aim for it. There’s no way you can pick up everything in one go. Know what you want, and just do it. 3.
Practice
Using chopsticks doesn’t come naturally. You can’t learn to use them by just reading about them. 4.It is the same with the real life. You can read as much as you like about all the things you want to do, but it will just amount to dreams and theory if you don’t try actually doing it.
Slowing Down
5.Why? Because it allows your stomach to tell your brain you’re full before you overeat. Eating with chopsticks is a slower process, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes we need to slow down and take things one step at a time, so that we have time to think and realize that we don’t have to keep charging full speed through life.
A. Aim
B. Motivation
C. What can we learn from them?
D. You have to practice using them
E. Those who eat too fast were less successful at losing weight
F. Sometimes, a little bit of focus makes the difference between failure and success
G. A common health tip is to try to eat with chopsticks when you can

This year’s winners of the Wenjin Book Award, announced by the National Library of China on April 23, are from three main categories — children’s books, popular science and social science titles.
The annual awards announced on World Book Day are meant to build a bridge between readers, writers and publishers to create a conductive feeling for reading books and fulfill the duty of libraries to promote culture and educate the people.
Started in 2004 and first celebrated in 2005, the award’s group of judges is drawn from a pool of great scholars and journalists.
Zhang He, a senior culture reporter from the People’s Daily, says the awards are considered the most honorable in China’s book world because it fully focuses on the quality of the books.
Every year, the award selects 10 books from those published within the past 12 months, covering three areas: humanities and social science, popular science and children’s book. The judging group also makes dozens of book recommendations for the public.
From 2005 to 2014, with a break in 2012, judging groups selected 99 books and recommended some 421 others from a pool of 6,000 titles.
Critics (評(píng)論員) praised the winning books, especially Zhongguo Gudai Wuzi Wenhua, or Tangible Culture in Ancient China, published by the Zhonghua Book Company in July 2014. Based on a series of the writer Sun Ji’s lectures on Chinese culture, the book has 10 chapters that attempt to answer people’s questions about various aspects of ancient Chinese people’s lives. Chen Li, a writer and one of the judges says that the book has the “newest, most comprehensive and systematic description” on Chinese culture.

Alex Elman runs a big business --- something hard to imagine after she lost her sight in her twenties. But Elman says that losing her sight helped her focus on finding success.
Elman’s father planted a hillside vineyard in western Massachusetts in 1981. It’s where Elman fled during the darkest period of her life. When she was 27 years old, she went blind due to complications from juvenile diabetes (幼年型糖尿病) 17 years ago. She recalled, “I hid in my home. I hid in the place, to me, that was the safest place in the world.”
Elman is now the founder of Alex Elman Wines, a growing portfolio (股份) of organic wines from all around the world: Chianti from Italy, Torrontes from Argentina. Elman doesn’t work alone. Her assistant, a guide dog named Hanley, is something of a wine snob, and quite a beggar. Hanley travels to all of the wineries that Elman does, from South America to Europe.
At first, Elman resisted the idea of a seeing-eye-dog. Now it’s hard to imagine her life, or her business, without him. She said. “When someone tells me something is organic and I don’t really believe it because I taste something funny on it, I’ll put it in front of his face and if he likes the wine, he’ll actually go in and sniff it. If it’s not right, he’ll turn his head away…He gets in the dirt with me. He scratches around. He makes sure that we see earthworms and butterflies. That’s how we know that the soil is actually organic, that there are no chemicals.”
Elman told CBS News she believes the loss of her vision was a gift. She said, “It allowed me to pay attention to what I thought was important and also to be able to teach people that the broken hang nail is not a big deal, you know what I mean? Don’t sweat the small stuff. Don’t sweat the big stuff either.”
1.Elman hid herself in her father’s vineyard probably because she ________.
A. suffered from juvenile diabetes
B. was extremely painful for her blindness
C. would like to help her father with the work
D. expected to recover her sight sooner or later
2.We can learn from Paragraph 3 that Elman ________.
A. has earned a large amount of money
B. plans to operate organic wine companies
C. has become successful with Hanley’s help
D. has travelled around the world with Hanley
3.Whenever Elman couldn’t judge the wine exactly, she would ________.
A. turn to Hanley for advice
B. have another taste in person
C. order Hanley to head away
D. make Hanley to drink it
4.The underlined phrase “the broken hang nail” (in Paragraph 5) probably refers to ________.
A. a nail which is of no use
B. a disadvantage you have in your life
C. a person who is hard to deal with
D. a task that is not easy to accomplish

It’s hard to find Alice Munro in the media. Even after she won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Canadian writer just appeared for a quick interview and then dropped out of sight. On Dec 29, she still didn't seek the spotlight(聚光燈)when she was named one of the five Women of the Year by the Financial Times.
In Munro's eyes, ordinary lives always hide larger dramas. So she records what we casually think of as the everyday actions of normal people. She often focuses on life in her hometown, a small village in Ontario which she is most familiar with. She writes about the ordinary things in the village-fox forming, trees filled in the Ontario wilderness, poor country alcohol and long last illnesses. Above all, she talks about girls and women who have seemingly ordinary lives but struggle against daily misfortune. She has a special talent for uncovering the extraordinary in the ordinary. These are ordinary people, ordinary stories, but she has the magic. Her precise language, depth of detail and the logic of her storytelling have made her stories inviting.
Runaway, one of Munro’s representative works, is a good example of her writing style. One of the stories centers on the life of an ordinary woman Carla, who lives in a small Canadian town with her husband Clark. The story slowly forms a picture of Carla, trapped in a bad marriage, her unhappiness building into desperation until she decided to flee. The story of Carla is a story of the power and betrayals of love. It is about lost children and lots of chances that we can all find in life. There is pain beneath the surface, like a needle in the heart.
Since she published her first collection of short stories in 1968, Munro has won many awards, with the Nobel Prize being her biggest honor. On Oct. 10, 2013, the Nobel Prize committee named Munro the “master of the contemporary short story”.
1.We learn from Paragraph 1 that Alice Munro_________.
A. didn't get on well with the media
B. remained modest though very successful
C. didn’t value the title of Women of the Year
D. was surprised at winning the Nobel Prize
2.What makes Alice Munro’s stories fascinating according to the text?
A. Her writing techniques. B. The complicated plots.
C. The humorous language. D. Her rich imagination.
3.What is the text mainly about?
