As computer games get to look more lifelike, it seems that their violence is spilling over into real life. It is reported that some dozens of children have been murdered since 1997, which has been linked to all obsession (著迷) with violent video games. Recently the parents of a 14-??year-??old murder victim in the UK blamed the killer's obsession with the game Manhunt, causing a government review of legislation (立法) to protect children.

Psychologists think there may be many reasons why violent games are more harmful to children than violent movies. Firstly, players are actively involved in violence, and may begin to see using weapons as second nature. Secondly, violent games provide repetitive aggressive (侵犯的) experiences that are rewarded by more killing.

Many studies have shown that people who play violent games regularly are more likely to show high levels of aggression. For instance, in 2000, scientists in Iowa State University found that people who played violent games were more likely to admit involvement in aggressive behaviors, including assaults (侵犯人體罪) or robberies.

A study of 13 to 14-??year??-old children showed that more than half had played games recommended only for over??18s. The more violent the games they played, the more they considered physical aggression to be acceptable. Besides, children who play violent games are more prone (有做……傾向的) to arguing with teachers and fighting.

Experimental studies have also hinted at a possible link. In one, scientists asked a group of students to play a violent game, while another group played the non??violent. Those who played the violent games were faster to react to aggressive words subsequently (隨后) flashed on screen.

We may infer from the first paragraph that .

A. computer games have little to do with violence in real life

B. Manhunt has resulted in the death of one of its plays

C. lifelike computer games are forbidden in the UK

D. legislation to protect children in the UK still needs improving

Violent games are more harmful to children than violent movies because .

A. violent movies are not so attractive to children

B. the viewers can't take part in violent movies

C. violent movies are not popular with children

D. children can win awards in violent games

What will be probably discussed in the paragraph following the passage?

A. Further research on the harm of violent games.

B. Further differences between violent game and non??violent games.

C. Ways to protect children from violent games.

D. The result of more experimental studies.

What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Games and Murder

B. Should Computer Games become lifelike?

C. Legislation, effective or not?

D. Violent Games and Non??violent Games

It’s parents’ worst nightmare. Their child doesn’t come home one evening and is missing for several days.

When a 14-year-old boy from Atlanta, Georgia disappeared earlier this year, his mother turned to her Smartphone for clues using an app(應(yīng)用程序) called Family Tracker that helped track his location.

“You can see where your loved ones are without having to call or bother them. ”said Roberto Franceschetti of LogSat, the creators of the Family Tracker, which has more than 100,000 users and is available worldwide.

Parents can track the location of their child on a map, send messages, and even sound an alarm on the phone in a long distance.

“We have an option for the sender to make a very unpleasant, noisy sound. It’s a loud alarm and we repeat that sound every two minutes until the person picks it up, ”he said.

Parents don’t need to own a Smartphone to track their children. The service is also accessible through the web, as long as the phone that is being tracked is running the app.

Family Tracker has an additional service that keeps records of all data from the app for a two-week period, which the company calls GPS breadcrumbs.

“With a subscription(預(yù)定), we keep all the locations where people have been on our servers. You can see where your kid has been for the past two weeks. You can find out where someone was at a certain time or when that person was at a specific place, ”Franceschetti explained.

“When somebody gets abducted(劫持), usually whoever does this throws the phone away or takes the battery out. We were hoping that our app would at least provide information on where the person was abducted or where they had been in the past. ”

But will these types of apps let out personal secrets?

“The advantages are huge compared to the disadvantages. Let’s not forget that the person always has to give initial permission—no one can be tracked unless they allow someone to do it. ”said Franceschetti.

B. The loss of children won’t be a nightmare for parents any more.

C. The app will repeat the loud alarm continuously whenever parents track children.

D. The app can keep records of information for more than half a month.

3.Which belong to the functions of the new app?

a. track location    b. detect criminals          c. send messages

d. protect privacy           e. send remote alarm      f. record information

Annalisee Brasil, a 14-year-old girl, is one of the brightest kids of her generation. When Annalisee was 3, her mother Angi noticed that she was stringing together word cards into correct sentences. After the girl turned 6, her mother took her for an IQ text. Her IQ is above 145, placing the girl in the top 0.1% of the population. Annalisee should be the star pupil at school. She is witty and pretty, and it’s easy to imagine she would get along well at school. But Annalisee’s parents couldn’t find a school willing to take their daughter. Socially, Annalisee is finally learning to get along with others. “It’s been interesting having to deal with that and getting used to the judgments of other kinds,” she said. “We get into arguments a lot, because we’re all really smart people with opinions, and it doesn’t always turn out that great. How could we have thought so wrongly of as banana peel that it always hits the garbage? Utility of anything seems to be in the eyes of the beholder. The banana peel hasn't been an exception.

What most of us looked at as waste was converted to a thing of utility by Prithwis Mukhopadlyay, a 14-year-old prodigy. This Bengali boy, nourished in the US, Lake Junior High in Woodbury, Minnesota, has come up with an idea to convert banana peels to biogas.(生物氣).

It's well known that almost any organic waste can be converted to biogas. But why biogas from banana peel has hit the news is because it produced five times as much biogas as manure(糞), a commonly used source for producing biogas, in the experiments Prithwis conducted.

He filled two airtight containers, one with manure and the other with banana peels. Then he mixed each content with water and connected them to empty jars via pipes to collect the gas produced. He placed a heater next to each jar and measured the gas collected for 60 days. His studies proved that banana peels produced five times more biogas than manure.

This project titled 'Comparison analysis: Eco-friendly source of energy for the future,' earned him a spot in Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge. This weekend, the young whiz is to showcase his research work along with 40 other finalists at Washington. "Initially, I thought of doing a project that would reduce global warming. Things changed after I visited a biogas plant in a village in India during my summer vacations. It was an amazing experience," Prithwis says.

1.Why could Prithwis's finding receive the attention of the media?

A.Because he is a prodigy.

B.Because he is of Bengali descent.

C.Because he used an extremely rare organic waste to produce biogas.

D.Because his research proved that banana peels can produce more biogas.

2.Where did Prithwis derive his inspiration  from?

A.Lake Junior High.   B Discovery Channel.

C.  India.            D.His laboratory at home.

3.This article probably appeared in a _________ magazine.

A.gourmet          B.science           C.computer         D.fashion

Some people believe that a Robin Hood is at work, others that a wealthy person simply wants to distribute(分發(fā))his or her fortune before dying. But the donator who started sending envelopes with cash to deserving causes, accompanied by an article from the local paper, has made a northern German city believe in fairytales(童話).

The first envelope was sent to a victim support group. It contained ?10,000 with a cutting from the Braunschweiger Zeitung about how the group supported a woman who was robbed of her handbag; similar plain white anonymous(匿名)envelopes, each containing ?10,000, then arrived at a kindergarten and a church.

The envelopes keep coming, and so far at least ?190,000 has been distributed. Last month, one of them was sent to the newspaper’s own office. It came after a story it published about Tom, a 14-year-old boy who was severely disabled in a swimming accident. The receptionist at the Braunschweiger Zeitung opened an anonymous white envelope to find 20 notes of ?500 inside, with a copy of the article. The name of the family was underlined.

“I was driving when I heard the news,” Claudia Neumann, the boy’s mother, told Der Spiegel magazine. “I had to park on the side of the road; I was speechless.”

The money will be used to make the entrance to their house wheelchair-accessible and for a course of treatment that their insurance company refused to pay for.

“For someone to act so selflessly, for this to happen in such a society in which everyone thinks of himself, was astonishing,” Mrs. Neumann said. Her family wonder whether the donator is a Robin Hood character, taking from banks to give to the needy.

Henning Noske, the editor of the Braunschweiger Zeitung, said: “Maybe it is an old person who is about to die. We just do not know.” However, he has told his reporters not to look for the city’s hero, for fear that discovery may stop the donations.
