Instead of sending her away or    30   with her, he said to her, “Fetch me a mustard (芥末) seed from a home that has never    31   sorrow. We will use it to drive the sorrow out of your life.” The woman went off at once in    32   of that magical mustard seed.
She came first to a splendid apartment,    33   at the door, and said in a (n)    34   voice, “I am looking for a home that has never known sorrow. Is this such a (n)    35   that I want? It is very important to me.”
36  , she didn’t get what she wanted, even without a single word of    37  . They told her that she had come to the wrong place. And they began to    38   all the tragic things that recently had happened to them.
The woman said to herself, “Who is better able to help these poor,   39   people than I, though I also have had misfortune of my own?” She    40   to comfort them till they    41  . Then she went on searching for a home that had never known sorrow. But    42   she turned up, in small cottages or in other places, she found one    43   after another of sadness and misfortune. She became so    44   in helping other people out of their sorrow that finally she forgot about her quest for the special mustard seed, in fact, never    45   that it had driven the sorrow out of her life.

Number sense is not the ability to count. It is the ability to recognize a    1   in number. Human beings are born with this ability.   2   , experiments show that many animals are, too. For example, many birds have good number sense. If a nest has four eggs and you remove one, the bird will not    3  .However, if you remove two, the bird    4   leaves. This means that the bird knows the    5   between two and three.
Another interesting experiment showed a bird's    6   number sense. A man was trying to take a photo of a crow(烏鴉)that had a nest in a tower, but the crow always left when she saw him coming. The bird did not    7   until the man left the tower. The man had an    8  .He took another man with him to the tower. One man left and the other stayed, but they did not    9   the bird. The crow stayed away until the second man left, too. The experiment was    10   with three men and then with four men. But the crow did not return to the nest until all the men were    11  .It was not until five men went into the tower and only four left that they were    12   able to fool the crow.
How good is a human's number sense? It's not very good. For example, babies about fourteen months old almost always notice if something is taken away from a    13   group. But when the number goes beyond three or four, the children are    14   fooled.
It seems that number sense is something we have in common with many animals in this world, and that our human    15   is not much better than a crow's.

One morning Mrs Smith was driving home after she had done shopping. When she drove near a rubbish dump, she noticed a microwave oven(微波爐) not far from the side of the road.“John is a good electrician!”she said to herself.“Perhaps he can repair this. I'll take it home and let him try.”She picked up the oven and put it in the boot of her car. Then she drove on happily. A few kilometers later, she heard the siren (警報器)of a police car behind her. She looked in the driving mirror and saw a policeman waving to her to tell her to pull over and stop.
Mrs Smith was very puzzled. She slowed down at the side of the road. A traffic policeman got out of the police car and walked up to her.
“Can I see your driving license and insurance certificate(保險證),please? ”he asked her. He copied down details of her name, address and the number of the car.“What's wrong, officer?” Mrs Smith asked. The policeman did not reply. He looked in the car and then at the back.      “Open the boot, please.”he said to Mrs Smith.
Mrs Smith was still puzzled. She opened the boot and pointed to the microwave oven. "I found this old microwave oven a few minutes ago," she said. "I'm just taking it home to see if my husband can repair it." The policeman stared at her for a moment to see if she was telling the truth. "That's not a microwave oven." he said at last. "That's our radar set(雷達裝置). It was the start of a speed trap. Do you mind if we have it back?"   Mrs Smith's face turned red. "Oh", she said," I'm very sorry. I wouldn't have touched it if I'd known what it was."
