A new collection of photos brings an unsuccessful Antarctic voyage back to life.

Frank Hurley’s pictures would be outstanding----undoubtedly first-rate photo-journalism---if they had been made last week. In fact, they were shot from 1914 through 1916, most of them after a disastrous shipwreck(海灘), by a cameraman who had no reasonable expectation of survival. Many of the images were stored in an ice chest, under freezing water, in the damaged wooden ship.

The ship was the Endurance, a small, tight, Norwegian-built three-master that was intended to take Sir Ernest Shackleton and a small crew of seamen and scientists, 27 men in all, to the southernmost shore of Antarctica’s Weddell Sea. From that point Shackleton wanted to force a passage by dog sled(雪橇) across the continent. The journey was intended to achieve more than what Captain Robert Falcon Scott had done. Captain Scott had reached the South Pole early in 1912 but had died with his four companions on the march back.

As writer Caroline Alexander makes clear in her forceful and well-researched story The Endurance, adventuring was even then a thoroughly commercial effort. Scott’s last journey, completed as be lay in a tent dying of cold and hunger, caught the world’s imagination, and a film made in his honor drew crowds. Shackleton, a onetime British merchant-navy officer who had got to within 100 miles of the South Pole in 1908, started a business before his 1914 voyage to make money from movie and still photography. Frank Hurley, a confident and gifted Australian photographer who knew the Antarctic, was hired to make the images, most of which have never before been published.

1.What do we know about the photos taken by Hurley?

A. They were made last week

B. They showed undersea sceneries

C. They were found by a cameraman

D. They recorded a disastrous adventure

2.Who reached the South Pole first according to the text?

A. Frank Hurley B. Ernest Shackleton

C. Robert Falcon Scott D. Caroline Alexander

3.What does Alexander think was the purpose of the 1914 voyage?

A. Artistic creation

B. Scientific research

C. Money making

D. Treasure hunting

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

Henry Ford, the famous U.S. inventor and car manufacturer, once said, “The business of America is business.” By this he meant that the U.S. way of life is based on the values of the business world.

Few would argue with Ford’s statement. A brief glimpse at a daily newspaper vividly shows how much people in the United States think about business. For example, nearly every newspaper has a business section, in which the deals and projects, finances and management, stock prices and labor problems of corporations are reported daily. In addition, business news can appear in every other section. Most national news has an important financial aspect to it. Welfare, foreign aid, the federal budget, and the policies of the Federal Reserve Bank are all heavily affected by business. Moreover, business news appears in some of the unlikeliest places. The world of arts and entertainment is often referred to as“the entertainment industry”or“show business.”

The positive side of Henry Ford’s statement can be seen in the prosperity that business has brought to U.S. life. One of the most important reasons so many people from all over the world come to live in the United States is the dream of a better job. Jobs are produced in abundance because the U.S. economic system is driven by competition. People believe that this system creates more wealth, more jobs, and a materially better way of life.

The negative side of Henry Ford’s statement, however, can be seen when the word business is taken to mean big business. And the term big business—referring to the biggest companies, is seen in opposition to labor. Throughout U.S. history working people have had to fight hard for higher wages, better working conditions, and the fight to form unions. Today, many of the old labor disputes are over, but there is still some employee anxiety. Downsizing—the laying off of thousands of workers to keep expenses low and profits high—creates feelings of insecurity for many.

1.The United States is a typical country ________.

A. which encourages free trade at home and abroad

B. where people’s chief concern is how to make money

C. where all businesses are managed scientifically

D. which normally works according to the federal budget

2.The influence of business in the U.S. is evidenced by the fact that ________.

A. most newspapers are run by big businesses

B. even public organizations concentrate on working for profits

C. Americans of all professions know how to do business

D. even arts and entertainment are regarded as business

3.Henry Ford’s statement can be taken negatively because ________.

A. working people are discouraged to fight for their fights

B. there are many industries controlled by a few big capitalists

C. there is a conflicting relationship between big corporations and labor

D. public services are not run by the federal government

4.A company’s efforts to keep expenses low and profits high may result in ________.

A. reduction in the number of employees

B. improvement of working conditions

C. fewer disputes between labor and management

D. a rise in workers’ wages

閱讀下列短文,選出最佳選項。

When I was about ten years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee. I knew I could see Mr. Lee any time around the neighborhood, so I didn’t pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee, my mother stopped me and said something that has stuck with me from that day until now. She said seriously, “You let that be the last time you’ve ever walked by somebody and not opened up your mouth to speak, because even a dog will wag its tail when it passes you on the street.” Mother’s words sound simple, but it’s been a guidepost for me and the foundation of who I am.

It’s not just something I believe in; it’s a way of life. I believe that every person deserves to feel someone acknowledge their presence, no matter how humble (卑微) they may be.

At work, I always said hello to the founder of the company and ask him how our business was doing. But I also spoke to the people who cleaned the buildings and asked how their children were doing. After a few years of greeting the founder, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting. We had a great talk. At a certain point I asked him how far he thought I could go in his company. He said, “If you want to, you can get all the way to this seat.”

I’ve become vice president, but it hasn’t changed the way I approach people. I still follow my mother’s advice. I speak to everyone I see, no matter where I am. I’ve learned that speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it allows them to come into mine, too.

1.What did the author do when he met Mr. Lee?

A. He talked with somebody else.

B. He was attracted by a dog.

C. He greeted him politely.

D. He ignored him.

2.What kind of person is the author’s mother?

A. Optimistic. B. Kind-hearted.

C. Strict. D. Open-minded.

3.How did the company founder reply to the author?

A. He inspired him. B. He played a joke.

C. He invited him to coffee. D. He gave him the seat.

4.What does the author think of saying hello to people?

A. It’s a way to show sympathy to people.

B. It can build connections with others.

C. It’s a must to become a president.

D. It can bring him what he wants.

閱讀下列短文 ,從每題所給的四個選項 (A 、B 、C 和 D )中 ,選出最佳選項。

Last year my summer holiday was ruined by my bringing along a modern convenience that was too convenient for my own good: the iPad. Instead of looking at nature, I checked my e-mail. Instead of paddling a small boat, I followed my Twitter feed(推特簡訊). Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading four newspapers each morning. I was behaving as if I were still in the office. My body was on vacation, but my head wasn’t.

So this year I made up my mind to try something different: avoiding the Internet. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, since I’m bad at self-control. But I was determined. I started by giving the iPad to my wife.

The cellphone signal at our house was worse than in the past, making my attempts at cheating an experience in defeat. I was trapped, forced to go through with my plan. Largely breaking away from e-mail, Twitter and my favorite newspaper websites, I had few ways to connect to the world except for the radio—and how much radio can one listen to, really? I had to do what I had planned to do all along: read books.

This experience has had a happy ending. With determination and the strong support of my wife, I won in my vacation struggle against the Internet, realizing finally that it was I, not the iPad, that was the problem. I knew I had won when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi. “I don’t need it,” I said.

However, as we return to post-vacation life, a harder test begins: Can I continue when I’m back at work?

There are times when the need to know what’s being said right now is great. I have nointention of giving up my convenience completely. But I hope to resist the temptation to check my e-mail every five minutes, which leads to checking my Twitter feed and a website or two.

I think a vacation is supposed to help you rest your brain to become more productive. Here I hope this one worked.

1.What do we know about the author’s last summer vacation?

A. He was determined to enjoy the beautiful view.

A. He cut off his cellphone signal.

B. He handed his iPad to his wife.

C. He refused to cheat in his house.

D. He listened to the radio most of the time.

3.When back at work, the author will probably choose to ________.

A. keep control of when and how to use the Internet

B. continue to read more and more books

C. stay away from the Internet for ever

D. stop checking what is being said right now completely

4.What is the author’s opinion of a great vacation in the passage?

A. A vacation is having nothing to do but read all day.

B. A vacation proves that a life of pleasure is overvalued.

C. A vacation is a period of time to do whatever one wishes to.

D. A vacation means a change of pace to make one more creative

科目:高中英語 來源:2016屆福建漳州高三畢業(yè)班高考模擬(一)英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

Wildlife conservationists in Kenya are trying to save a rare kind of rhinoceros (犀牛). So many northern white rhinos have been hunted and killed that they are almost dying out. There were only five northern white rhinos left. So the workers hoped they could save the rhinos by helping them produce young.

Three northern white rhinos lived at The Ol Pejeta Conservancy (保護區(qū)) in Kenya. Workers with military weapons guarded the rhinos as they walked, played and ate over a large area of natural grass and trees. The three rhinos were brought to the conservancy in 2009 from a zoo in the Czech Republic. Workers hoped they would have a better chance of survival in a more natural habitat.

But breeding has not been as successful as they had hoped. And the number of northern white rhinos continues to decrease. One of the rhinos at the conservancy died in October. Another died at a zoo in the US city of San Diego, California earlier this month. The San Diego zoo still has one northern white rhino left. The zoo in the Czech Republic also has one.

The last wild northern white rhinos were hunted and killed during conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the past ten years. Rhinos are killed because many people in Asia want the animals’ horns (角). They believe the horns will help with medical problems. But researchers say there is no medicine in the horn, just a kind of hair.

The last male northern white rhino is 41 years old. He has been unsuccessful in producing young with a female rhino. So conservationists will use artificial methods to make a young female become pregnant. If that is not successful, they will try to fertilize a northern rhino egg and put it into a southern white rhino, who will act as a surrogate(代孕) mother. The last solution would be cross-breeding between the northern and southern white rhino species. If cross-breeding is successful, there is hope that some part of the northern white rhino species may still live on.

1.Why were the three northern white rhinos brought to the conservancy in Kenya?

A. To protect them from being killed by the armed guards.

B. To ensure that they live better in a natural environment.

C. To keep the conservation a good balance of nature.

D. To attract more visitors to come to this area.

2.In Paragraph 3, it’s inferred that the number of the rhinos falls down to .

A. 1 B. 3

C. 5 D. 7

3.People hunted and killed rhinos because .

A. they wanted to get rhinos’ horns for medical use

B. rhinos ate natural grass and trees on their farmland

C. get rid of the threat of rhinos from their life

D. they wanted to do researches on producing young for rhinos

4.From the last paragraph, we can learn that .

A. other measures will be taken to breed rhinos

B. the conservationists lead a busy life in Congo

C. breeding a baby white rhino is quite an easy job

D. cross-breeding is an effective way to produce young
