【答案】Dear Jim,

I’m delighted to hear that you’ll be a senior student. Now, I’d like to share my study tips with you.

First, you’d better communicate with your teachers regularly. In this way they may offer some great advice on both your study and life. Second why not involve yourself in each class actively, listen to the teacher attentively and take notes carefully so that you can review later? Third, its a good idea to do your homework on time soon after school, which will help you practice what you have learned and make it fresh in your mind.

I sincerely hope my advice can be helpful to you and that you can enjoy your new school life.

Best wishes!

Yours

Li Hua

The event was swimming. I watched a man dive off the blocks and knew right away that something was wrong. I'm not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle.

I heard the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he made his turn to start back. It was pitiful. Some even began to stand and yell things like, "Come on, you can do it!" He did. The crowd went wild.

Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to take part in the event. 【題目】I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.

I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.

One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Now I’ve got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren’t top of the class at school.

1When staying with the two girls’ family, the author __________.

A. took a day off every other week

B. often worked long hours

C. was paid for extra work

D. got much help from her boss

2Why did the author leave her first job?

A. She was fed up with children.

B. She found a full-time job.

C. She needed a rest after working extra hours.

D. She decided to attend a part-time course.

3What has the author learned from her own experiences?

A. One must choose the job she likes.

B. Less successful students can still have a career.

C. Hard work makes an excellent student.

D. Qualifications are necessary for a career.

【題目】The weather is getting hotter. You are thirsty playing basketball or riding home from school. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you are drinking. Something that looks cool may not be good for your health.

There are plenty of "energy drinks" on the market. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. The lists on them tell you they are helpful to your health. Sounds great!

But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine(咖啡因) in them. These drinks are especially aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much.

Caffeine makes your heart beat fast. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited(限制) its use. Caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as strong as that in a cup of coffee or tea. Possible health dangers have something to do with energy drinks. With the cold weather season rapidly approaching, caring for dry skin may become more challenging. Here are some tips on how to protect your skin and keep it healthy throughout the colder months of the year.

【1】

Avoid harsh(刺激性的) cleansers containing sulfates or alcohol, and choose a gentle cleanser. Harsh cleansers may disrupt the PH balance of your skin and cause dryness.

Switch to a face oil

2 In order to avoid dryness, rub about 3 to 5 drops of oil the palm of your hands and then gently pat it into the skin. Face oils offer the benefit of conditioning the skin and protecting it from the cold air.

Exfoliate(去死皮)

Exfoliating is very important because it helps to get rid of dead skin cells and encourages skin cell renewal. 3 However, especially when the skin is feeling extra dry, it is important to use a gentle product and not to overdo it.

4

If you don’t feel thirsty and struggle with taking in enough liquids, try to drink tea, sweetened with a little raw honey. Dehydrated skin cells have a slower turnover rate, which results in dull skin and more visible fine lines.

5 The most advantage is that you will spend the cold season with comfort and confidence.

A. Drink plenty of water

B. Eat homemade soups

C. Use mild facial cleansers

D. Follow the above tips, you may own nice skin and look better.

E. Here are three of the most common example of skin discomfort.

F. After cleansing your face, your skin still takes the risk of dryness.

G. Moreover, dead skin cells won’t allow your face oil to enter the skin deeply.

How To Study English In China

English is obviously not the native language in China. Although many Chinese want to improve their English level to the amount needed in daily work, it’s very hard when only a few people speak English around them. 【1】 Here are a few tips that might help.

Join a school with native teachers to guide you.

2】The more exposure you can get to these foreign teachers, the faster and better you’re going to learn English. If a school doesn’t give students maximum exposure to native English speakers’ classes, find one that does.

Read English daily.

This means using websites that are permitted in China, accessing English texts, newspapers and books. Read short stories in English. When you come across words you don’t know write them down immediately. 3

Find some English speakers.

Spend time with them and share conversations. There is nothing better for learning any language than finding native speakers of the language to practice with. When you speak, you are practicing every aspect of the language(except writing) in the most efficient way possible.

Memorize vocabulary.

Write new words in a notebook every week, with English definitions and a sample sentence, not a Chinese translation. 【4】 Carry it with you everywhere you go. Even if you have a question about something that you see and you don’t know the English word, write it down in your own language with the plan to look it up later and learn that word in English.

5】English is not well controlled by grammar rules. For every rule, there is an exception to that rule. Your time will be better spent in watching movies and learning from them than studying grammar for long hours. Find someone to write emails in English to or write a dairy every day.

There are many other ways to improve your English. Come on!

A. Learn to write.

B. Watch an English film once a month.

C. What can you do to study more English?

D. There are many English speakers in China.

E. You can do this by writing in your notebook.

F. Follow a soap opera, comedy or radio program or TV drama.

G. You should be carrying a notebook with you everywhere you go just to write down something important.
