Dear Editor,

I'm a senior high school student named Li Hua. Now many students have iPads and think it's a fashion to use them. Using an iPad, we can listen to music, download a lot of learning materials and read them on the screen. Apparently, it's helpful to our study, especially to our English listening.

Some students, however, bring their iPads to the classroom and listen to music without earphones, which makes the teacher and other students greatly annoyed. Some of them even waste precious time in class playing video games.

In my opinion, as students, we should make good use of iPads to help achieve academic success. The classroom is a place for students to study, and therefore concentration is awfully needed for us to learn our lessons. Furthermore, the school should make a rule to guide the students to use iPads in a proper way.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

The British royal family is about to be slimmed down. The queen plans to reduce the number of real royals, as was recently announced. However, there seems little sign of the monarchy (君主) disappearing completely.

Up till the 17th century, the British king or queen was believed to rule by “divine (神的) right”, which was the idea that God chose the king or queen to rule and that he or she was therefore above the law. However, this idea ended with the English Revolution, in which King Charles I was imprisoned and then killed in 1649.

So what role does the British royal family have today?

Well, the Queen has important formal duties: as Head of State, the Queen represents the UK on visits abroad and invites other world leaders to visit the UK. As Head of the Armed Forces, only the Queen can declare when the UK is at war or when war is over. The Queen also has constitutional duties: She has to sign many government and Commonwealth documents every day.

In addition, the royal family spends a great deal of its time traveling up and down the country in support of different charity projects. But the public in Britain do not believe there should be a royal family. Sometimes, the press and media criticize the royal family as well. One criticism is that British people should not have to pay for the royal family through their taxes.

Today, the royal family works hard to be relevant in the modern world. The queen’s speech on TV is less formal every Christmas, and is now available as a podcast (播客). In 2005, after graduation from university, Prince William spent time teaching English in Uruguay, the sort of work many young British people do at some time in their lives.

1.What can be concluded from the first two paragraphs?

A. The British king or queen is no longer believed to rule by divine right.

B. The British king or queen is about to become common people.

C. The English Revolution put an end to the British royal family in 1649.

D. The royal family’s role was most important in Britain in the 17th century.

2.Which of the following is NOT among formal duties of the Queen?

A. Declaring when the UK is at war.

B. Travelling around the world for charity projects.

C. Inviting other world leaders to visit the UK.

D. Signing Commonwealth documents every day.

3.Prince William is mentioned in the passage to show that ________.

A. he is popular in the UK

B. many young British people do voluntary work

C. he has tried to win young people’s admiration

D. the royal family is trying to change their image

4.We can infer from the passage that ________.

A. British people are all in favor of the royal family

B. the British royal family are facing surviving challenges

C. the public are encouraged to oppose the royal family

D. British youths are required to teach English in Uruguay in their lives

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2014-2015學(xué)年福建長(zhǎng)汀縣第一中學(xué)高三上第四次月考英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

I used to think of myself as a person learned in books, but my bookshelves told a different story. Apart from a few Indian novels and an Australian book, my literature collection only consisted of British and American titles. Worse still, I couldn’t ever found anything in translation. My reading was limited to stories by English-speaking authors. So, at the start of 2012, I set myself the challenge of trying to read a book from every country in a year to find out what I was missing.

With no idea where to get those books, I was unlikely to find publications from nearly 200 nations on the shelves of my local bookshop, so I decided to ask the readers all over the world for help. I created a blog called A Year of Reading the World and put out an appeal for suggestions of titles that I could read in English.

The response was amazing. People all over the world were getting in touch with me, offering ideas and book lists. Some posted me books from their home countries. In addition, several writers, like Turkmenistan’s Ak Welsapar and Panama’s Juan David Morgan, sent me unpublished translations of their novels, giving me a rare opportunity to read works unavailable in Britain. Even with

such an extraordinary team of bibliophiles(愛(ài)書(shū)者) behind me, however, sourcing books was no easy task. With translations making up only around 4.5 per cent of literary works published in the UK, getting English versions of stories was tricky.

One by one, the books from the countries on the list filled my heart with laughter, love, anger, hope and fear. Lands that had once seemed exotic and remote became close and familiar to me. At its best, I learned, reading makes the world real.

1.The author realized she was not a learned person when she found ________.

A. she could do nothing but read books

B. she didn’t have any translated books.

C. she had never been to Indian and Australian

D. she could only read simple English stories

2.What was the challenge the author set for herself?

A. Looking for publications to publish her own books.

B. Creating a blog to offer help to other readers.

C. Reading books from nearly 200 countries in a year.

D. Giving some suggestions on learning English.

3.It was not easy to find the books mainly because ________.

A. the readers were unwilling to offer help

B. there were too few translations in the UK

C. the author had no time and no chance to do it

D. the writers didn’t want to publish their books

4.We can infer that by reading the books from other countries, the author feels ________.

A. satisfied and rewarded

B. thankful and pitiful

C. calm and peaceful

D. bored and regretful

The trip to the United Stated opened my eyes to the fact that there are a lot of similarities as well as differences between American youth and French youth.

The first difference is in appearance. Going around in the U.S., I found that American youth do not really care about their appearance. In the morning, they choose something in their closet and wear it with another thing, often of different colors and styles, without wondering whether their choices make them look strange. The reason behind this is that they don’t care what people look like, but are just interested in their ideas. I think it’s great, but it also causes problems. Since they don’t care about their appearance, they don’t really care about their weight. Often they get fat without realizing it.

There are differences in relationships too. When the American youth fall in love, they don’t really think of the future. Also, there are differences in the rules concerning behavior that is allowed. In some respects, the French are more accepting. For example, in America it is generally unacceptable to make physical display of love. Lovers, in theory, can’t kiss or hold each other everywhere they want. People think that not showing love in public places is a way to respect others. On the contrary, the French youth can do almost everything they want.

With regard to other types of relationships, there are also big differences. Americans act differently from French people in front of unknown people. When an American girl, for example, arrives in front of people she has never met before, she will talk with them, trying to create a kind of bond(聯(lián)系)between her and this new circle of people. The French girls will just think about rather than really do this kind of thing because they are too shy and lacking in self-confidence.

To finish, I noticed that in American classes, when pupils want to say or ask something, they just do it. In general, they don’t really care how the others will judge them. In France, it’s not the same case. If somebody wants to ask something, he/she will think about it before speaking up. I appreciate the freedom in Americans’ behavior, ideas, and ways of expressing themselves.

1.American young people _______.

A. are just interested in people’s clothes

B. show more interest in people’s ideas

C. care more about their weight

D. are more concerned about appearance

2.When American youth fall in love with each other, they _________.

A. will not hold each other

B. will always think about their future

C. will rarely display their love in public

D. will kiss wherever they like

3.When meeting with strangers, American girls will not _______.

A. try to establish a type of relationship with them

B. have faith in themselves

C. start to create a conversation

D. behave in a way similar to French girls

4.It can be inferred from the passage that French youth may think more about ______.

A. their relationship’s future

B. their public images

C. their physical displays

D. their lover’s ideas

5.The passage is mainly about the______ between American youth and French youth.

A. similarities B. friendship

C. differences D. differences and the similarities
