Endangered languages are languages that wouldn't exist any longer, much like endangered species of
plants or animals. Languages are considered to be endangered when parents are no longer teaching the
language to their children and are not using it actively in everyday life. A language is considered to nearly
disappear when it is spoken by only a few elderly native speakers.
The world faces enormous challenges in order to protect different kinds of languages. Of the more than 6,912 languages, half may be in danger of disappearing in the next several decades.
It is caused by many reasons: small numbers of speakers, the regular use of other languages, attitudes
towards their languages, moving of the younger population, government policies, and languages used in
education and so on. A language may lack important things such as a body of literature, and people who
read and write it. A language may also lack prestige (聲望) and support of its speakers.
The survival of a language is also threatened when speakers move to other areas where different
languages are spoken, or when government policies improve the use of a specific language in school,
official business and the media. These situations encourage people to learn the wider-known language and may cause them, especially the young, to stop using their mother tongue. Often those speaking
lesser-known languages will choose to learn a more prestigious language with the hope of greater
economic opportunities. Most of the world's parents are teaching their children English, French, Spanish,
Chinese, Arabic, Russian or some other main languages instead of their own languages for social and
economic reasons.

The spread of worsening international financial crisis has seriously affected world economic growth and
stability. The ongoing financial crisis is rarely seen in history. Countries and organizations have taken measures
in response, and we hope these measures will produce the desired results soon. Countries in Asia and Europe
are an important force for international financial stability and world economic growth. I suggest that we make
greater efforts in the following aspects:
First, countries should run their own affairs well. In the face of the crisis, it is important for leaders to act
in the fundamental and long-term interests of the people and use necessary monetary and regulatory tools to
regain market confidence as soon as possible and maintain economic growth.
Second, set up coordination (調(diào)和) and cooperation among governments. The financial departments,
central banks and financial regulators around the world should closely follow the development of the crisis
and study its trend and impact.
Third, strengthen regional financial dialogue and cooperation. Members of the Eurozone have reached
agreement on the basic principles to tackle the financial crisis. We in Asia are also exploring the possibility
of expanding the size of bilateral currency swap (互惠外匯信貸) arrangements under the 10+3 framework.
Fourth, push forward the reform of the international monetary and financial systems. The present crisis
has exposed the weaknesses in the existing international financial system and governance structure. It
important to do three things in this regard: first, increase the say and representation of developing countries
in international financial organizations; second, expand the space of the regulation of the international financial
system, and third, establish a reasonable global financial rescue mechanism (機(jī)制).
1. According to the passage, members of the Eurozone reached agreement on ______.

[     ]
A. to closely follow the development of the crisis.
B. to study the trend and impact of the financial crisis.
C. to do their own business well.
D. to increase the say and representation of developing countries in international financial organizations.
3. Which word has the same meaning with the underlined word maintain?

The Parthenon in Athens is a building with a long and complex history.Built nearly 2,500 years ago
as a temple celebrating the Greek goddess Athena, it was for thousands of years the church of the
Virgin Mary of the Athenians, then a mosque (清真寺), and finally a ruin. The building was changed
and the sculptures were much damaged over the centuries.By 1800 only about half of the original
sculptural decoration remained.
Between 1801 and 1805, Lord Elgin, the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, which
controlled Athens, acting with the full knowledge and permission of the Ottoman authorities, removed
about half of the remaining sculptures from the fallen ruins and from the building itself.Lord Elgin loved
Greek history and transported the sculptures back to Britain. The arrival of the sculptures in London

important representation of ancient Athenian civilization. Each year millions of visitors admire the artistry
of the sculptures and gain insights on how ancient Greece influenced-and was influenced by the other

Try to imagine what first few months of your life were like. I am sure you just spent most of your time

time to play with you and talk to you. You watched and listened curiously. You began to know that people

Five Olympic mascots were announced exactly 1000 days before the Beijing Olympic opening
ceremony. The long-anticipated mascots represent four of China's most popular animals—the fish, the
panda, the Tibetan antelope and the swallow. The fifth mascot is the brightly burning Olympic flame.
Each of the mascots has a repeated two-syllable name. This type of name is a traditional way of
showing affection for children in China. BeiBei is the fish, JingJing is the panda, HuanHuan is the Olympic
flame, YingYing is the Tibetan antelope and NiNi is the swallow. The first characters of their two-syllable
names read "Beijing Huanying Ni," or, in English, "Welcome to Beijing."
The five elements of nature, including the sea, forest, fire, earth and sky are found in the mascot's
origins and headpieces. These special headpieces also display the folk and culture of China. Each mascot
also symbolizes a different blessing —prosperity, happiness, passion, health and good luck.
It is the first time more than three mascots will share the important duty of representing their host

I was reading these intriguing stories behind a group of great logos in the world. Personally Nike is my
favorite one-it's so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things.
McDonald's, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my very
favorites.
     Nike
In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration  for  soldiers. This
logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike's logo was designed by
Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.
     McDonald's
The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler  to  resemble  the  archshaped  signs  on  the  side
of  the company's then walkup hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined
together to form the M. The McDonald's name was added to the logo in 1968.
     Apple
There  are  different  stories  behind Apple's logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious
story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year
later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir
Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn't stay long. One year later it was replaced
almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff's "rainbow apple", a rainbowcolored silhouette(輪廓)
of an  apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbowcolored apple was replaced by the
onecolored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.
     Mercedes Benz
The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a
simple description of a threepointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The
company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Marcedes is the name of Maybach's
elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie. and DMG in 1926.
     Adidas
The  Adidas  logo, which  was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents
mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. The logo
was used for the first time in 1967.

1. What does the author think of the stories of the great logos?

A. They are boring.
B. They are out of date.
C. They are attractive.
D. They are practical.

2. What does Nike's logo stand for?

A. The goddess of victory.
B. The source of inspiration for soldiers.

D. The wing of the Greek goddess.

3. We can learn that Apple's present logo is ________.

A. the religious story of Adam and Eve
B. a bitten apple with only one color
C. Newton's sitting under an apple tree
D. the rainbowcolored bitten apple
