【題目】Albert was an ordinary worker in an oil company in America. His workmates gave a nickname(綽號(hào)) “Four dollars a bucket (桶)” to him, for he was always used to leaving an advertisement of his company “Four dollars a bucket of oil” below his name whenever and wherever he wrote down his name.

As time went by, people forgot his real name. Later, when Rockefeller, the board chairman of the oil company, heard of it, he was very surprised, so he invited Albert to come to his office.

“Some people give you a nickname for ‘Four dollars a bucket’. Why aren’t you angry?” asked Rockefeller with some puzzlement in his eyes.

“Oh! Mr. Rockefeller! I like this nickname very much, because ‘Four dollars a bucket’ is our company’s advertisement. As long as someone calls me ‘Four dollars a bucket’ once, I think it’s a free advertisement for our company. I have no reason to get angry. Don’t you think so, Mr. Rockefeller?”

“Oh! What a fantastic man!” Rockefeller said excitedly when hearing Albert’s words. “Young man, work harder! You must succeed in the future! I believe in you!”

Five years later, Albert became the second board chairman after Rockefeller.

History is a record of what has happened in the past. 【1】 The really fascinating thing is that much of history has been repeated time and again. It allows us to learn from the past, both the mistakes made and the successes achieved.

One of the benefits of history is reading how other people both famous and totally unknown have overcome tremendous challenges in their life. These challenges, although particular to a person, or to a certain time in the past, or occurring in a different country or culture, all convey the same thing. 2

3 He encountered many failures while on the road to finally inventing the modern day light bulb. He could be held out as an example of a person who never gave up. 4 However, he did not let those failures stop him. He had a dream and he just kept trying different things until he did reach success.

Or, consider the story of Abraham Lincoln who managed to become President of the United States even though he suffered many setbacks and personal losses. Most of us only realize the success of Mr. Lincoln becoming President. 5 His life was not an easy one. His story is one that motivates us to keep moving forward no matter what obstacles we have in life.

A. History has a lot of influence on us.

B. Take for example the story of Thomas Edison.

C. History has some very unique qualities about it.

D. I am sure he was discouraged span>by his many failures.

E. They convey wisdom in their short stories of perseverance.

F. Few of us knew about the many challenges he had to overcome.

G. Only those with courage to face challenges can hope to live their dreams.

Perhaps you think you could easily add to your happiness with more money. Strange as it may seem, if you're unsatisfied, the issue is not a lack of means to meet your desires but a lack of desires—not that you cannot satisfy your tastes but that you don't have enough tastes.

Real riches consist of welldeveloped and hearty capacities(能力) to enjoy life. Most people are already swamped(淹沒) with things. They eat, wear, go and talk too much. They live in too big a house with too many rooms, yet their house of life is a hut.

Your house of life ought to be a mansion(豪宅), a royal palace. Every new taste, every additional interest, every fresh enthusiasm adds a room. Here are several rooms your house of life should have.

Art should be a desire for you to develop simply because the world is full of beautiful things. If you only understood how to enjoy them and feed your spirit on them, they would make you as happy as to find plenty of ham and eggs when you're hungry.

Literature, classic literature, is a beautiful, richly furnished room where you might find many an hour of rest and refreshment. To gain that love would go towards making you a rich person, for a rich person is not someone who has a library but who likes a library.

Music like Mozart's and Bach's shouldn't be absent. Real riches are of the spirit. And when you've brought that spirit up to where classical music feeds it and makes you a little drunk, you have increased your thrills and bettered them. And life is a matter of thrills.

Sports, without which you remain poor, mean a lot in life. No matter who you are, you would be more human, and your house of life would be better supported against the bad days, if you could, and did, play a bit.

Whatever rooms you might add to your house of life, the secret of enjoying life is to keep adding.

Gavin Joseph, a teenager with Asperger’s Syndrome, was beaten up by a group of people for just being different. Asperger’s Syndrome is a developmental disorder that affects a persons ability to socialize. But instead of putting them into prison for what they did to him, Gavin offered them a chance to become more tolerant and understanding.

On Thursday night, some kids were talking about how “it’s weird(怪異的) that he is always by himself, attending events alone and watching people, and it was creepy that he wanted to be friends with people he didn’t know.

On Friday night, another kid that overheard that conversation decided to take matters into his own hands and become judge and jury, and this is the result of that. He didn’t ask questions, didn’t get to know Gavin, never met him, and didn’t give him a chance to leave. He was called to meet someone, surrounded by people he didn’t know, choked, punched(用拳猛擊), and left lying on the pavement so he would “l(fā)earn his lesson”.

Gavin emerged from the attack with a concussion(腦震蕩), a fractured nose, a bruised esophagus(食道) and some damage to his eye, but thankfully, none of the injuries resulted in permanent damage.

But here’s the truly amazing part Gavin refused to press charges against the people who did this to him. Instead of wanting to see them punished, he wants to see them educated. Gavin asked that his attackers do community service that is disability-related. According to his mother, Gavin also asked “that they watch a 20 min video statement he taped while their families were present so they could see the damage they did and hear the event from his perspective.”

“If you are reading this, I hope you talk to your teens,” his mother wrote. “Tell them about disabilities you can’t see, teach them to be tolerant of people that are different, teach them that if they continuously see someone alone that maybe it is not their choice to be alone, remind them to ask questions first and get to know one another.”
