Dear Mayor

I am a student of No.3 Middle School. Here I have something to tell you. Next to a primary school stands our school, facing a main street. When it comes to traffic jams, it’s crammed with cars during the rush hours. What makes things worse is that children have to be picked up by their parents owing to their young age. As a result, it’s of great danger for the students to go through the traffic. According to the phenomenon stated above, I think it’s high time that the government took some measures such as building an overpass to make sure the students are safe when crossing the road.

I’m looking forward to you reply.

Yours

According to ,I think it’s high time that,according to把事實(shí)與分析銜接得恰到好處,而I think it’s high time that用虛擬語(yǔ)氣建議提得委婉得體。

What is language for? Some people seem to think it’s for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words---the longer the lists, the better. That’s wrong. Language is for the exchange(交流)of ideas and information. It’s meaningless knowing all about a language if you can’t use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can’t speak correctly or fluently(流利地).They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote,“Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, they also make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can’t make another people’s language. So Chinese students should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn’t overdo(做過(guò)頭)it. They should put communication(交際)first.

Advertisement is the difficult business of bringing information to great numbers of people. The purpose of an advertisement is to make people respond to make them react to an idea, such as helping prevent forest fires,or to make them want to buy a certain product or service. At the beginning of the 20th century, advertisement was described as“salesmanship in print”.If this definition were expanded to include radio and television,it would still stand today. The most effective way to sell something is through person-to-person contact. But the cost of person-to-person selling is high because it takes a great deal of time, and it increases the cost of the product or service.Advertising distributes the selling message to many people at one time. The first printed advertisement in the English language appeared in 1278,more than a century before Shakespeare’s first play was produced. This early advertisement was the work of William Caxton,England’s first printer, who used it to advertise religious books from his own workshop Caxton posted small printed notices along London’s main streets.Besides advertising his product,he identified his shop with a red-striped shield(盾形徽章)so that customers could find it easily.
This same sort of simple informational advertising is still used.Examples are the roadside signs that tell travelers that they can buy fresh corn just down the road or that there is a restaurant in the next town.
The Industrial Revolution,in the 18th and 19th centuries, brought a new kind of advertising.Large factories took the place of small workshops and goods were produced in large quantities.
Manufacturers used the newly built railroads to distribute(遞送)their products over wide areas. They had to find many thousands of customers in order to stay in business. They couldn’t simply tell people where shoes or cloth or tea could be bought---they had to learn how to make people want to buy a specific product. Thus modern advertising was born.
Advertising created new markets and helped to raise standards of living as people came to feel that they had a right to new and better products.

Limit the use of private cars, improve public transport and encourage the use of bicycles to control traffic congestion(擁擠) during the 2008 Olympics, experts from foreign countries advised Beijing on Friday.
Professor Nigel Wilson, of the civil and environmental engineering department of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said he was "supportive to the limiting of private cars during the Olympic Games", saying that in foreign countries, the method is also adopted during big events, but he was unsure about the approach.
The government planned to keep an average of more than one million cars off the roads to improve traffic flow during the Olympics, said Liu Xiaoming, deputy director of the Beijing Traffic Committee, at the China Planning Network First Urban Transportation Congress.
Sharing Wilson's view, Dr. Yoshitsugu Hayashi, dean of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies of Nagoya University, believed the reduction in car use should be achieved not by banning, but through incentives.
"Drivers who don't use their private cars could be given points," he said, "and the points could be exchanged for goods from online shopping."
Wetzel stressed limiting the use of company cars. "Governmental officials should also be encouraged to use public transportation or ride bicycles," he said, adding that he himself is a bicycle-rider in London.
Matthew Martimo, director of Traffic Engineering with Citilabs, said the bicycle was China's advantage. "Limiting private cars is an idea worth trying but it is just a temporary solution," he said. "The real cause of congestion is high density of people in Beijing and many have cars."
Beijing, with a population of 15 million, is home to more than three million automobiles, and the number is rising by 1,000 a day.
Professor Wilson said the Olympic Games was a great opportunity for Beijing to think about traffic problems and develop transportation, adding that the city had already been making public transport more efficient. Beijing has promised to stretch its 114-kilometer city railway to 200 kilometers before the opening of the Olympic Games.
“We are looking forward to borrowing Beijing's experiences and drawing from its lessons in preparation for the 2012 Olympics,” said Wetzel.
