One morning Raman, a true master of the art of archery (箭術), invited his favorite student to watch a display of his skill. The student had 36 this more than a
hundred times before, but he still obeyed his 37.
Together, they went into a nearby wood and reached a tall 38. Raman picked a rose flower and 39 it on one of the branches of the tree. He 40 opened his bag and took out three objects: his 41, an arrow and a white handkerchief.
Raman stood one hundred paces from the spot where he had placed the 42. Facing his target, he 43 his student to blindfold (蒙住眼睛) him with the handkerchief. The student did as his teacher 44.
“How often have you seen me practice the sport of archery?” Raman asked him 45.
“Every day,” replied his student. “And you have 46 managed to hit the rose from three hundred paces away.”
With his eyes covered by the 47, Raman placed his feet firmly on the ground and 48 the bowstring (弓弦) with all his strength. Aiming at the rose on the 49, he let the arrow fly. The arrow whistled through the air, 50 it did not even hit the tree, missing the target by a few meters.
“Did I 51 it?” said Raman, removing the handkerchief from his eyes.
“No, you missed 52,” replied the student. “I thought you were going to 53 me the power of thought and your ability to perform magic.”
“I have 54 taught you the most important lesson about the power of thought.” replied Raman. “When you 55 something, concentrate only on that: No one will ever hit a target they cannot see.”

Anne and Joseph are talking about an interesting question. Why do some people change their names? There can be many reasons. Hanna changed her name to Anne because she thought it would be easier for people to remember. On the other hand, Joseph is thinking about changing his name to an unusual name because he wants to be different.
People have a lot of reasons for changing their names. Film stars, singers, sportsmen and some other famous people often change their names because they want names that are not ordinary, or that have special sound. They chose the “new name” for themselves instead of the name their parents gave them when they were born.
Some people have another reason for changing their names. They have moved to a new country and want to use a name that is usual there. For example, Li Kaiming changed his name to Ken Lee when he moved to the United States. He uses the name Ken at his job and at school. But with his family and Chinese friends, he uses Li Kaiming. For some people, using different names makes life easier in their new country.
In many countries, a woman changes her family name to her husband’s after she gets married. But today, many women are keeping their own family name and not using their husband’s. Once Dr. Mellinkoff invited me to join him at the hospital to discuss interesting cases(案例, 病例) with his  students. The case at hand was a Guatemalan man, aged 34, who had a fever and many other medical problems. His condition was not improving, and there was not much hope he would live.
Dr.: Mellinkoff asked to see the patient. He introduced himself in Spanish and, in a very gentle voice, asked how he felt. The patient smiled and said everything was all right. Then the doctor asked if he was able to eat.The patient said that he had no desire to eat.
"Are you getting food you like?"
The patient said nothing.
"Do you get the kind of food you have at home?"
The answer was no.
The doctor put his hand on the man's shoulder and his voice was very soft.
"If you had food that you liked, would you eat it?"
"Yes, yes," the patient said.
The change in the patient's appearance couldn't have been more obvious.Nothing was said, but it was easy to tell that a message had been sent and had also been received.
Later, the doctor asked why the Guatemalan man wasn't getting food he could eat.One of the students said, "We all know how difficult it is to get the kitchen to make special meals."
"Suppose," the doctor replied, "you felt a certain medicine was absolutely necessary but that our hospital didn't carry it, would you accept defeat or would you insist the hospital meet your request?"
"I would probably insist," the student said.
"Very well," the doctor said."You might want to try the same method in the kitchen. It won't be-easy, but I can help you.Meanwhile, let's get some food inside this man as fast as possible, and stay with it.Or he'll be killed by hunger.By the way, there must be someone among you who can speak Spanish. If we want to make real progress, we need to be able to talk with him."
Three weeks later.Doctor Mellinkoff told me that the Guatemalan man had left the hospital under his own power. It takes more than medicine to help sick people; you also have to talk to them and make them comfortable.

Last Sunday, I waked into the house in the afternoon to find my brother rushing around in a hurry. As soon as I took my coat off, my little brother placed a bunch of papers in my hands and asked me to fold them up so they could fit into an envelope as quickly as possible. He said it needed to get done quickly before it turned dark.
I was a little surprised that something could be so urgent on a Sunday. It wasn’t until I was halfway through that I actually looked at what I was folding. After I read it, it put the biggest smile on my face. It was a lovely letter to all the residents (居民)in my neighborhood. My brother was asking everyone to let him know if anyone needed help. He left his contact information and said that anyone that needed help should get in touch with him and he would figure something out. He also asked people to get in touch if they were able to help out.
London received an unusual amount of snow last week, and the city was completely under- prepared for it. So it was quite difficult to get anywhere. Only the major roads had been cleared, and smaller roads and pavements could be quite treacherous. There are a good number of old people in our little community. So my brother thought that the snow may have posed (造成)some difficulty for some of them, particularly because we live on a hill.
A few elderly people got in touch with him asking for help for things they needed. One of them was especially grateful because his caregiver couldn’t make it. To our surprise, he got more responses from people offering to help. Then he received help from people who wanted to help. Everyone was really touched and wrote to my brother wonderful email. One of our neighbors wrote email saying that although she wasn’t able to help, she was “very proud of having a neighbor like him who puts other people’s interests first.”
