[1]Oops! In your rush to get to school, you drop a piece of toast on the floor. Do you throw it away or decide it’s still OK to eat? If you’re like most people, you eat it. Maybe you follow the “5-second rule”, which claims foods are safe to eat, if you pick them up within 5 seconds of dropping them. But you might want to think again. Scientists now say that 5 seconds are all it takes for foods to become contaminated with enough bacteria to make you sick.
[2]Bacteria can cause many kinds of illnesses. Some kinds of bacteria can grow on food. If we eat foods on which these bacteria are growing, we can become sick. One of these food-borne bacteria is Salmonella. It makes 1.4 million people sick every year. Earlier this year, 370 people became sick after eating peanut butter that had been contaminated with Salmonella at the manufacturing factory. Salmonella are often found in raw eggs and chicken. Cooking kills these bacteria, which is why it is so important to cook eggs, chicken, and other foods carefully.
[3]Being a good housekeeper is another good way to prevent infection. If household surfaces aren’t washed thoroughly, they can support Salmonella for weeks. A team of scientists at Clemson University in South Carolina have tested the 5-second rule, using sandwich ingredients. First, they placed a known amount of Salmonella cells on three surfaces: wood, tile, and carpet. They then placed a slice of bread and a slice of bologna(博洛尼亞大紅腸) on each surface for 5, 30, or 60 seconds. After just 5 seconds, both the bread and bologna picked up enough bacteria to make you sick.
[4]So forget the 5-second rule. If your toast lands on the floor, throw it away. Stick a fresh slice of bread in the toaster. And this time, be careful not to drop it!

小題1:根據(jù)第一段“Maybe you follow the “5-second rule”, which claims foods are safe to eat, if you pick them up within 5 seconds of dropping them.”可知,食物在掉落的五秒之內(nèi)被撿起時(shí),食物還是安全的,故填I(lǐng)f you pick food up within 5seconds of dropping them, they are safe to eat.
小題2:根據(jù)第二段“Bacteria can cause many kinds of illnesses. ...Cooking kills these bacteria,”可知,通過(guò)燒煮能夠殺死食物里的細(xì)菌,故填Because cooking kills bacteria.
小題3:根據(jù)最后一段“So forget the 5-second rule.”可知,第一段提到的“五秒理論”并不科學(xué),掉到地上的食物不能再食用,故填Don’t eat food that has dropped on the floor./ being a good housekeeper.
小題4:根據(jù)第三段“After just 5 seconds, both the bread and bologna picked up enough bacteria to make you sick.”可知,食物五秒鐘就充滿了細(xì)菌,這個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)的目的是為了驗(yàn)證食物滋生細(xì)菌需要多長(zhǎng)時(shí)間,故填To find out how long it takes these bacteria to attach to food.
小題5:根據(jù)第一段“Scientists now say that 5 seconds are all it takes for foods to become contaminated with enough bacteria to make you sick.”和第四段“So forget the 5-second rule.”可知,作者對(duì)“五秒理論”持否定的態(tài)度,故填Negative.

[1] Joshua Lionel Cowen,a New York inventor, was born in l 877.In 1 900,he created maybe the most popular Christmas toy of the last century —little electric trains that circle Christmas trees.More than 50 million Lionel train sets have been sold worldwide, and today Lionel produces more than 300 miles of track each year.
[2] Like many American inventors,Josh Cowen, who died in l965,was self-taught.According to history books.when he was 7 he carved a wooden toy train and tried to put a little steam engine on it.The engine blew up,but there were no complaints from his parents and eight brothers and sisters.
[3] As a 23-year-old working at an electric fan company,Cowen dreamed up putting a little battery—powered fan motor onto a wooden toy train he called the Electric Express. He took it to a toy store, and they put it in the window to replace a train you had to push around by hand.Within days,Christmas shoppers snapped up six Lionel trains, and the company business took off
[4]While there were many toy train companies—the first electric train was exhibited at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago—Cowen’s invention beat them a11.probably because he tied it to Christmas and produced the toy villages and other things to put around the tree and the train.Still, competition has not stopped.Today there are many companies making toy trains of all sizes, some on tracks using electricity, some on the floor using wind-up springs(發(fā)條).
[5] One of the best places in Washington to see a big toy train display is the U.S.Botanic Garden. The big glass building at the foot of the U.S.Capitol has a single train running in one room and a bunch of trains in another big room.____________________________ is one of the most popular holiday attractions in the city.

The 17-year-old made the record after he cleared the Panama Canal (巴拿馬運(yùn)河) and then sailed through the Caribbean and home across the Atlantic.

On the recent journey, the scariest moment for Mike came when his sailboat was hit by storms in the southern Indian Ocean.
"We were picked up by what felt like a 60-foot wave and threw down on our side at 90 degrees , "  he said.
"It felt like I was going right over.  Stuff was flying around and I just thought ' Oh no' .  "

When my father was celebrating a milestone (里程碑) birthday, I pulled together a surprise gift that he would never forget.
As he was approaching 60,1 had a firm idea: What if I could get the memories people had of him, put each one into an envelope - 60 in total - and have him open them, one by one, on his birthday? So I wrote an e-mail to family and friends, explaining my idea.
I sent the e-mail and waited. And then the replies started coming in and I was very, very surprised. There were so many memories, and they were all so lovely. They came from the '50s, '60s, '70s, from every decade(十年) between now and the day my dad was born. They came from my mother, my siblings, my grandma, my dad's friends from high school, his sister, my dad's first boss, a colleague at his first job, from people who hadn't seen my dad in 40 years, from people I myself hadn't even informed. They typed them and handwrote them. They mailed them and e-mailed them.
The night before Dad's birthday, my sister and 1 stayed up late, putting everything together with some

Empathy
【1】Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 1 0 years. That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said.Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.
【2】Jennifer Freed,a co—director of a teen program, has another explanation.Turn on the TV,and you’re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. Humans learn by example-and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.
【3】There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples.Humans are socially related by nature.Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human-and having empathy is decisive to those relationships.Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect.Besides,empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.
【4】Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact,Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things that they look for in new managers.Good social skills-including emoathy-are essential abilities that will help you succeed in many areas of life."Academics are important. But if you don’t have emotional intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,”she says.
【5】____?For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others.“One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,”Freed says.
【6】To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a“sharing circle’’with your family,or spend time caring for pets at all animal shelter.
