As societies develop, their members start to see things not so much according to what they need, but according to what they want. When people have enough money, these wants become demands.
Now,it’s important for the managers in a company to understand what their customers want if they are going to develop effective marketing strategies(策略).There are various ways of doing this. One way at supermarkets(超市),for example,is to interview(采訪)customers while they’re doing their shopping. They can be asked what they prefer to buy and then the results of the research can be studied. This provides information on which to base future marketing strategies. It’s also quite normal for top managers from department stores to spend a day or two each month visiting stores and mixing freely with the public,as if they were ordinary customers,to get an idea of how customers act.
Another way to get information from customers is to give them something. For example, some fast food restaurants give away tickets in magazines or on the street that permit customers to get part of their meal for nothing. As well as being a good way of attracting customers into the restaurants to spend their money,it also allows the managers to get a feel for where to attract customers and which age-groups to attract.
Another strategy used at some well-known parks such as Disneyland is for top managers to spend at least one day in their work, touring the park dressed as Mickey Mouse or something like that. This provides them with a perfect chance to examine the scene and watch the customers without being noticed.

Demands for stronger protection for wildlife in Britain sometimes hide the fact that similar needs are felt in the rest of Europe. Studies by the Council of Europe, of which 21 countries are members, have shown that 45 per cent of reptile (爬行動物) species and 24 per cent of butterflies are in danger or dying out.
European concern for wildlife was outlined by Dr Peter Baum, an expert in the environment and natural resources division of the council, when he spoke at a conference arranged by the administrators of a British national park. The park is one of the few areas in Europe to hold the council’s diploma for nature reserves of the highest quality, and Dr Baum had come to present it to the park once again. He was afraid that public opinion was turning against national parks, and that those set up in the 1960s and 1970s could not be set up today. But Dr Baum clearly remained a strong supporter of the view that natural environments needed to be allowed to survive in peace in their own right.
“No area could be expected to survive both as a true nature reserve and as a tourist attraction,” he went on. The shortsighted view that reserves had to serve immediate human demands for outdoor recreation should be replaced by full acceptance of their importance as places to preserve nature for the future.
“We forget that they are the guarantee (保證) of life systems, on which any built-up area depends,” Dr Baum went on. “We could manage without most industrial products, but we could not manage without nature. However, our natural environment areas, which are the original parts of our countryside, have become mere islands in a spoiled and highly polluted land.”
59. Recent studies by the Council of Europe have declared that ____ .
 A. wildlife needs more protection only in Britain
 B. all species of wildlife in Europe are in danger of dying out
 C. there are fewer species of reptiles and butterflies in Europe than elsewhere
 D. many species of reptiles and butterflies in Europe need protecting
60. Why did Dr Baum come to a British national park?
 A. Because he needed to present it with a council's diploma.
 B. Because he was concerned about its management.
 C. Because it was the only national park of its kind in Europe.
 D. Because it was the only park that had ever received a diploma from the council.
61. The last sentence in the second paragraph implies that ____ .
 A. people should make every effort to create more environment areas
 B. people would go on protecting national parks
 C. certain areas of the countryside should be left intact (完整的)
 D. people would defend the right to develop the areas around national parks
62.Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?
 A. We have developed industry at the expense of countryside.
 B. We have forgotten what our original countryside looked like.
 C. People living on islands should protect natural resources for their survival.
 D. We should destroy all the built-up areas.

Preparing for the Next Job Market
The latest spike in the unemployment rate is being felt across the board ?in 98 percent of metropolitan areas, in high-wage and low-wage jobs, among young and old, women and men, but especially men.
This landscape means that young Americans who are trying to plan their futures right now have some hard choices.Do they go to college and take on debt without hope of getting a job? And what about high school students? Do they have any chance of securing a job without a college degree? Perhaps the education system needs to react to this rapidly moving economic crisis.
In our current economic collapse, the connection between education and employment could not be more different than it was during the Depression.Education must now hold center stage, not because of an enemy abroad but because of the global economy. The jobs of the future will demand levels of education, particularly skills in mathematics, technology and science, which exceed those now taught in high school.
A healthy society should strive for full employment. In our times, that goal cannot be realized, or even approximated by creating jobs for the unskilled. The long-term prospect for economic recovery depends on the extent to which we improve our educational system. And this is where America is now at its weakest.##
Our high schools produce graduates who do not write well enough, have limited reasoning skills and are unable to use the tools of mathematics.Their command of science is far inferior to that of their counterparts in other nations. And all too many young people drop out.We may still have the best university system, but it benefits only a minority.
We will need more engineers, scientists and service providers, particularly in the health professions, with a quality of education that cannot be obtained in the current system.Radical change, not reform, is called for.
What should be done? First, high school should be cut short and end when students are 16.Second, a new generation of two-year college programs tied to a wide range of specific skills that the economy needs should be created.Third, access to four-year colleges should be expanded, giving more Americans the chance to acquire the deep learning that makes breakthroughs in technology possible.Fourth, we need to recruit more public school teachers and train them better, particularly in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics, so that our children can be prepared to compete.
小題1:Nowadays, students graduating from high school____.
A.write well enough
B.have limitless reasoning skills
C.can't use the tools of mathematics
D.command science as much as their counterparts in other nations
小題2:What should we do to improve the quality of education?
A.Students shouldn't study in high school until 16.
B.We should create a new generation of two-year college programs tied to a wide range of specific skills the economy needs.
C.We should limit access to four-year colleges.
D.We ought to recruit more private school teachers and train them better.
小題3:What does the word "collapse" in the third paragraph mean?
A.successB.failureC.developmentD.booming
小題4:Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Young Americans planning their futures have difficult choices.
B.Education must hold center stage due to the global economy.
C.The best university system benefits a majority.
D.A health society should struggle for full employment.

Since long ago, greeting cards have been considered a time-saver.More than 150 years ago,a busy Englishman,Sir Henry, asked a friend to design a card so that he didn't have to labour to write holiday letters to his friends at the end of the year. Those paper cards are now the tradition.
But time, like sunlight,is still in short supply for December. That's why the Internet is ready to make a change in holiday greeting customs.Already, those, who are always busy, like sending video greetings by e-mail.So,don't be surprised to find a lively card in your electronic mail box at the end of the year or at any time you should have one.
A recent survey by the Shared Greetings Company found 50 percent of all the Internet users will send online cards especially during the holiday seasons.“That is a lot easier, and it is lively,”said Carol,a New Yorker, who had stopped at the Shared Greetings Company demonstration() online. With her children's help, she sent her first e-card before Thanksgiving Day.“It was the first time I had done something like this;it's quite enjoyable,”she said.
“I will send online Christmas cards to my friends,”said Marcos,a 22-year-old student.“It costs so little and you can even send numbers of greetings at a time.”But he added “the e-card also has its limits, and I don't think it is ready to replace the paper card for the more formal or traditional occasions. For some people,I would rather buy paper cards and mail them traditionally.I believe it is more personal and respectful in that way,”he said.
Well, for those who are very busy but still prefer to do a lot of greetings to different receivers in the holiday season, the Internet may have another way.“Now you can use the Net to decide and send as many as 50 beautiful cards, which allows the buyer to choose the inside saying,as well as the ink colour and typeface, only costing about 30 minutes,”said Julie,vice-president of marketing for an electronic card company-Hallmark Company.“And if you are in less of a hurry, you can spend another 30 minutes sitting in your home or office to create a photo card, showing off your kids, your pets or even your new house-anything as your favorite design for your relatives and friends.”

Stricter Traffic Law Can Prevent Accidents
From the health point of view we are living in a marvelous(不平凡的)age. We are immunized from birth against many of the most dangerous diseases. A large number of once fatal illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and surgery. It is almost certain that one day remedies will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased enormously. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible slaughter of men, women and children on the roads. Man versus the motor-car ! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen.
It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel, his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They swear, they are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-years-olds and utterly selfish. All their hidden frustrations, disappointments and jealousies seem to be brought to the surface by the act of driving.
The surprising thing is that society smiles so benignly on the motorist and seems to condone his behaviour. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost uninhabitable because of heavy tragic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is desecrated by road networks; and the mass annual slaughter becomes nothing more than a statistic, to be conveniently forgotten.
It is high time a world code were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are notoriously lax and even the strictest are not strict enough. A code which was universally accepted could only have a dramatically beneficial effect on the accident rate. Here are a few examples of some the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through stringent annual tests for safety. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can impair a person’s driving ability. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be mad much stricter. Maximum and minimum speed limits should be imposed on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications for manufacturers, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may sound inordinately harsh. But surely nothing should be considered as to severe if tit results in reducing the annual toll of human life. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars.
小題1:The main idea of this passage is
A Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists.
B Thousands of people the world over are killed each year.
C The laws of some countries about driving are too lax.
D Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents.
小題2:What does the author think of society toward motorists?
A Society smiles on the motorists.   B Huge car parks are built in the cities and towns.
C Victims of accidents are nothing.  D Society condones their rude driving.
小題3:Why does the author say:’ his car becomes the extension of his personality?’
A Driving can show his real self.      B Driving can show the other part of his personality.
C Driving can bring out his character.  D His car embodies his temper.
小題4:Which of the followings is NOT mentioned as a way against traffic accidents?
A Build more highways.       B Stricter driving tests.
C Test drivers every three years. D raise age limit and lay down safety specifications.
小題5:The attitude of the author is
A ironical        B critical        C appealing     D militant

科目:高中英語 來源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

B
This is a dangerous world we live in. The number of murders goes up every year, people are dying of cancer, more people contract HIV, more teens are using drugs, etc. You know this because you have heard all the statistics on the news and in the paper.  But do you really have an accurate idea what they mean? The numbers are growing up, but how do they compare to the growth in population? Are more cases of these diseases being reported because of better testing techniques, or are the diseases more common? The fact is that without knowing the background statistics mean very little.
This growing trend of reporting only part of the information is becoming dangerous. For example, several years ago a high school student reported the dangers of the chemical known as dihydrogen monoxide. This chemical, found in most cancerous tumors(腫瘤), is often found in the blood of people drunk on alcohol, and causes complete physical and mental dependence for those who take the chemical even once. After reading his report, more than 75% of his Advanced Placement Chemistry class voted to forbid this dangerous chemical! Every one of the above statements is true, yet this chemical is necessary to all life on earth. The students made the mistake because they voted knowing only a few statements and statistics, rather than the chemical’s full background.
The point of this article is that one should be aware of what is and is not being said. When one finds a new fact or number, one should try to consider other important information before forming an opinion with only half-truths. Always remember that the author is trying to convince you of his or her own view, and will leave out information that is different to his view. For example, look again at the statistics that suggest skiing is safe. Only 32 people may die each year when skiing, while 897 die from lightning strikes, but which is really the most dangerous? If you think about it, you realize far fewer people go skiing each year than the number of people who are in danger of a lightning strike. When you think about it, skiing is more dangerous than you might at first think when looking at statistics. If we teenagers are to be left in this world, we had better be able to think critically, and form our own views, rather than be easily persuaded by another’s. To be warned is to be prepared.
59. In the first paragraph, what problem does the writer want to warn us?
A. We are now living in a dangerous world.
B. We get a lot of false statistics from the media.
C. Statistics alone without full background doesn’t give us an accurate pictures of things.
D. There are around us more and more murders, diseases, etc.
60. Why does the writer use the example in the second paragraph?
A. To argue that high school students are easily persuaded.
B. To show the danger of reporting only part of the information.
C. To prove what is necessary to us might be dangerous.
D. To warn us of the harmful substance around us.
61. Relative information is often left out because__________.
A. Relative information is not that important.
B. too much information will make readers feel confused.
C. the author is trying to show what he or she says is true.
D. readers are not able to analyze so much information at once.
62. What can we learn from the passage?
A. We should learn to think critically and look at problems from all sides.
B. Some measures must be taken to protect our dangerous world.
C. The growing trend of reporting only half-truths is getting out of control.
D. Teenagers ought to improve their ability of telling right from wrong.
