Nearly everyone agrees that money doesn't buy as much as it used to, no matter where you want to spend it. This is certainly true of the paper money that passes so quickly through one's hands. Inflation steadily eats away at its buying power. But what about coins that seem to do very little except wearing out your purses and pockets? Unlike notes, metal money becomes more valua?ble the longer it is held, especially if it is put away where it won't get scratched or worn. Why is this? One reason is that coins, being more durable? fall more readily into a category for collectors. Naturally, the rarer gold pieces must become more valuable as the price of this metal goes up.

But, curiously, one of the rarest coins in the world is not made of gold, but of the relatively cheaper silver. In 1804, the United States mint(造幣廠) struck 19,570 silver dollars. That is what its records show. Today only six of this original number remain and these six are unlikely ever to reach the auction (拍賣)market. So what happened to some 19,564 large silver coins, not the easiest sort of things to lose? One of the more romantic theories is that they were part of the payment to Napoleon(拿破侖)for the American territory then known as Louisiana. But they never reached France. Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, the ship transporting them was sunk, either by a storm or by pirates(海盜).The probable answer to the mystery is that they were melted down since the silver value„was greater than the actual value of the coin. What really happened to the rest will probably always remain a mystery. What is known is that whoever can come up with one will find himself instantly rich.

I have often been considered strange when I tell people that I want to be a writer, because for most people, or at least teenagers in my geographic loca?tion, see writing as a difficulty. The reason why I want to be a writer is that writing gives me the power to create worlds and people out of nothing. We can create a picture in a few minutes with our minds. We have the power to influ?ence others, even people we've never met!

I have always wondered if it is the same thing that drives me, as a writer, as what drives video game creators or directors. We are all creating something out of nothing. The thing that is so amazing about writers is that we create something out of tools that don't cost more than a dollar (a piece of paper and a pencil). For writers it is all in our head. Our wonderful brain is our tool.

Some people have this simple way of writing that can sweep us off our feet. Those who have this gift often do not see the beauty in it. It is sad real?ly. Writing is such a basic element(元素)in our society that many take advan?tage of it and don't realize its greatness. It takes someone from the inside to understand and admire the art of putting words together to form a sentence; it sounds so simple and yet there is so much more to it than meets the eye.

Being a writer is a wonderful thing―something that is gifted to all of us who have the ability to form sentences on paper. Being a good writer or even great writer is the hard part. Oh! And don't even get me started on being a published writer.

5.Why do most people think "I" to be strange when hearing "Iw want to be a writer?

A.Because they consider writing as a difficulty.

B.Because writing isn't popular with the locals.

C.Because writers are very crazy and strange.

D.Because people can't make money by writing.

6.For the writer, what is the most important tool for writing?
  A. A pencil.              B. Wonderful brain.

C. A piece of paper.        D. A computer.

7.In which part of a website may the passage appear?
  A. Entertainment.                B. Hobby.

C. Life.                        D. Education.

8.Which is the best possible title of the passage?

A. Being a writer      B. A strange person
