Children model themselves largely on their parents. They do so mainly through identification. Children identify a parent when they believe they have the qualities and feelings that are of that parent. The things parents do and say---and the they do and say to them--therefore strongly influence a child's . However, parents must consistently behave like the type of they want their child to become.

A parent's actions affect the self-image that a child forms identification. Children who see mainly positive qualities in their will likely learn to see themselves in a positive way. Children who observe chiefly qualities in their parents will have difficulty positive qualities in themselves. Children may their self-image, however, as they become increasingly by peers groups standards before they reach 13.

Isolated(孤立的) events, dramatic(突然的) ones, do not necessarily have a permanent on a child's behavior. Children interact such events according to their established attitudes and previous training. Children who know they are loved can, , accept the divorce of their parents' or a parent's early . But if children feel unloved, they may interpret such events a sign of rejection or punishment.

In the same way, all children are not influenced by toys and games, reading matter, and television programs. in the case of a dramatic change in family relations, the of an activity or experience depends on how the child interprets it.

More and more people are taking their iPads to bed with them to surf the web, check facebook or send e-mails before switching off the light. But researchers are warning that the blue light their screens give off can stop users getting a good night’s sleep. That is because this type of light is similar to daylight, convincing the brain that it is still daytime. Blue light prevents the production of a brain chemical called melatonin, which helps us fall asleep. By contrast, light which is more orange or red does not prevent melatonin production, perhaps because our brains recognize it as a cue that the day ends.

Scientists have known for years that staring at screens late in the evening can affect sleep ---- they are television screens, computer screens or mobile phone screens. However, because mobiles and iPads are by nature portable ---- not to say addictive ---- more people are taking them into the bedroom. Users also tend to hold them much closer to their eyes than a computer or television screen.

Researchers are warning that looking at iPad displays for more than two hours leads to lower natural melatonin levels as the devices give off blue light. They say, “Turning off the devices at night is the final solution. But if you have to use these devices at night, dim the display to cut down irritation of the eyes and limit the time you spend on them before bed.”

They wrote in the journal Applied Ergonomics(應(yīng)用人類工程學(xué)) that iPad makers should adjust the spectral power distribution(光譜功率分布) of the devices so that they affect the sleep patterns of users less.

It is not just a good night’s sleep that could be harmed by too much late night screen time. Researchers know that long-term harm to sleep patterns can lead to an increased risk of obesity and even cancers.

A. it is the same as daylight which keeps people awake

D. it can help decrease the production of melatonin

2.The underlined phrase “dim the display” means ____.

A. keep away from the display

B. make the display less bright

C. clean the display carefully

D. turn off the display

3. In the last paragraph, the author intends to ____.

A. warn of the seriousness of long-term poor sleep

B. call on researchers to study sleep patterns

C. show the danger of obesity and cancers

D. show how sleep is harmed by using iPads too much

4.What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. Scientists are warning that blue light is bad for our health.

B. People should limit the use of electronic devices

C. Using iPads before bed can cause a poor night’s sleep.

D. Looking at screens of iPads increase chances of sleeplessness.

Finding a friend doesn’t seem like a difficult job. However, bad friends are easier to find than good friends these days. If you’re sitting there and wondering if you have a bad friend, let me define it for you.

A bad friend is someone whose jealousies and insecurities outweigh their love for someone. They night want to be a good friend but they’re too messed up in their own head to ever actually do it. They wonder if their friends are going out without them or if they’re being forgotten and left behind. People who are violently insecure don’t have what it takes to be the quality of a friend.

Bad friends are narcissistic(自戀的). They look for any opportunity to bring the conversation back to them. Worse, they might not even be aware that they’re doing it. In their mind, they might think they are the best friend ever, which is truly frightening.

Bad friends are quick-change. They’re by your side when you’re fun and you have something to give them but as soon as you’re going through a difficult time, they will become indifferent quickly. They won’t bring you cold medicine. They won’t give you a ride to the doctor, everything they do is self-serving.

If you find a friend who has these same characteristics, send them to your bad friend list immediately. Your friends are supposed to be the solution to your problems, not the source.

I believe your twenties are a time when you need positive and helpful friends. In such a time, friendships aren’t easy to maintain like they once were in school. Now we actually have to put work into it, we have to make a conscious effort to keep the friendship going. You need to ask yourself, “Is this person worth it? Do they treat me like a fool or what?” if your have doubts, try to make them clear by considering the past experiences. Toxic(有毒的) friendships do nothing but drag you down. My point is that you have to take care of yourself and stop getting in touch with your bad friends. Only surround yourself with people who bring out the best qualities in you. It may sound cruel but it’s true,.

1.The author believes that we can easily find a .

A. close friend B. poor friend

C. good friend D. bad friend

2.Bad friends give the author the following impressions EXCEPT being .

A. outgoing B.insecure

C. narcissistic D. self-centred

3.We can infer from the passage that a bad friend will when you have trouble.

A. feel worried as you do B. try hard to help you out

C. do nothing but leave you D. pay more attention to you

4.In the last paragraph, you are advised .

A. not to treat your friends like fools

B. not to keep a terrible friendship

C. not to be a bad friend of others

D. not to doubt but ask yourself

5.What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To tell us finding a friend is not an easy job for everyone.

B. To help us know about bad friends and get rid of them.

C. To encourage us to make more friends in school.

D. To advise us not to treat our close friends badly.
