Many solutions we seek with regard to achieving sustainability(可持續(xù)性) are within our reach.
That's the lesson our school's Environment Club has learned over the past two years. We've reduced
the amount of our waste at our school by 25 per cent. 1 We have the evidence we need to
suggest we are making a difference. If you are interested in leading your school on a similar journey
of change, here are some tips.
2
Examine the garbage can to find out how much of your school's garbage could be picked out from
the waste stream and be reused. We found that more than 80 percent of our waste could have been
reused, recycled or composted(制成堆肥).
Prepare dustbins there.
3 You will find you can cover the cost of the purchase of the dustbins within a few months simply
by selling the bottles and other items you collect.
Compost the waste.
Start a composting system in your school. You may reduce your waste by as much as 50 percent.
Be sure to talk with your teachers and your cafeteria staff to get them onside.
Share your success.
Let your community know what you've accomplished. 4 Ask your teachers if you can talk to
their classes, let your parent group know what you're doing, and present a report to the president of
your school.
5
Whether you spend a few moments in a quiet place or the whole day walking along a beautiful beach,
time outdoors will remind you why the work you do for the environment is so worthwhile.
A. Dig in.
B. Reward yourself.
C. Do outdoor activities.
D. They'll feel proud of you.
E. We need to go further, and we will.
F. Invite your friends to join your cause.
G. Make sure every classroom has dustbins for recycling.

When your pet is sick, you know it needs medication. But pets, like babies, don't know the pill you want them to take will help them. 1 Here are some tips to help get your pet to take liquid medicine.
2 If the answer is yes, then your easiest path is to mix it with canned food.First give your hungry pet a small amount of canned food without the medication. It's important that the pet nibbles(一點一點地吃)at the food and sees that there's nothing wrong.
Next, while the pet is still hungry, mix the medication in a small amount food and present it.Repeat as necessary to get the entire dose(劑量)down. 3 If the pet decides not to finish the meal, the dose will be wasted.
If the chemist says the medication cannot be taken with food, you need a syringe(注射器)or a dropper(滴管)to get the liquid down your pet's throat.
4 Keep a cheerful tone in your voice so the pet doesn't sense your stress or hesitation.Position your pet where it cannot run away, perhaps having a dog sit with his back against a wall or chair-or a cat on your lap.
5 Use your other hand to insert the syringe or dropper between the cheek and back teeth.Slowly squeeze the medication so the pet won't choke.Try to keep your pet's mouth closed for approximately 30 seconds until you see it has swallowed. If your pet is being obstinate(倔強的), stroke(撫摸)its throat gently or blow on the face.
Be sure you end the session with praise and perhaps a treat so your pet will not associate medication with a bad experience.
A.Before you call your pet in, be sure to have the medication and any other materials you’ll need ready.
B.Once the pet is in position, use one hand to gently open the pet's mouth from above, tilting back the head slightly.
C.Ask the vet if the liquid medication can be given with food.
D.You should know the reason why the pet refuses to take medicine.
E.Never mix the medication with the full meal.
F.They just know it smells funny and they don't want it.
G.Don't force your pet to swallow all the medicine.

1 I've spent several weeks trying to find the perfect way to work at my computer without a chair. Now more and more people like to have a change and stand up when they are on something important.Standing up is enjoyed by more people.Medical researchers have found people standing at work tend to be more healthier than those who sit.
But I wasn't just looking for better health. 2
In the last few years, many office supply companies have begun to sell the adjustable-height desks. These so-called “sit/stand” models are equipped with an electric motor that lets them shift from chair height to person height at the push of a button. 3 Sit/stand desks tend to be expensive, hard to find and not easy to test in person.
I discovered that when I worked standing up, my mind was more excited and new ideas kept coming out.I suspect that this is because when you are standing, you feel a bit unchained from your desk.If I got stuck on a word or sentence as I wrote, I found myself shaking my arms, bouncing on my feet or stepping away from the desk for a bit-things I couldn't do in a chair. 4 .
There's one other thing about standing for a long time; I tended to get hungrier than I do when I sit on a chair. The stand-ups think you burn more calories when you stand than when you sit.For this reason alone, I'm hoping that sit/stand desks one day hit the mainstream, with mass-market furniture companies making many low-priced versions. 5
A.It takes courage to stand up at work.
B.We could do all with a bit more standing up.
C.It's been proved that standing up at work does good to people.
D.Unfortunately, they're regarded as specialty furniture.
E.Standing would also improve how I work and relax my body.
F.Researchers found people's health partly depended on whether they stood up at work.
G.Often, standing up seemed to relax my mind enough for me to get over creative obstacles.

When I was a little girl, my mom would say, “Half the fun of doing anything is sharing it with others.” 1 Friends and mates allow us to enjoy our successes and our joys, comfort us in our hard moments, and provide a mirror for us to learn more about ourselves.I’ve always looked at friends as the family we choose. They enrich our lives. As Robert Louis Steven once said, “ 2 ”
To be a good friend or partner, it's important to be a good listener.Hear what your friend or mate has to say first rather than jump to conclusions or get defensive. 3 When they hear their words repeated back to them, it can help them to realize what they said was not exactly what they meant to say.
4 You know the old golden rule, “Care for others the way you would like them to care for you.” The support of a friend during a tough time could make the difference between success and failure.Encouragement and confidence are the gifts that can help change a person's life.
Take care, though, with whom you choose to have close relationship, for they can have a great effect on yourself-respect and life path.As someone once told me “ 5 They will either take you up or down.”
A.I am afraid so.
B.It is quite true
C.Friendship is the most important factor.
D.Sometimes it is useful to be their mirror.
E.A friend is a present which you give yourself.
F.The attitudes of your friends are like the buttons on a lift.
