9.There's no place in the world like Venice,Italy.Called the City of Water,Venice was built about 1,500 years ago. It's made up of 118 tiny islands in the Adriatic Sea.The area, however, may be in over its head. But now scientists have a new plan to save the city.
Because the city was built on soft soil,it has been sinking under the pressure of its own weight.Scientists estimate that Venice sinks at a rate of nearly 2 inches every 100 years.Rising sea levels could make Venice go under even faster, some experts say.Earth's temperature is slowly increasing. That is causing sea ice to melt, which makes the world's waters rise, they say.
To keep the city afloat, experts want to pump about 40 billion gallons of sea water beneath Venice. The liquid would expand the sand under the city, which would help support the islands, explains lead scientist Giuseppe Gambolati.
Experts are rushing to save Venice because of its rich history. The city was once a strong sea power."Many famous artists and opera singers have come from Venice. Some of the world's greatest paintings can be found on the city's museum walls,"explains Melissa Conn, who is a director of Save Venice Inc.
While scientists work to get their water-pumping plan approved,Venice's residents go about their normal routines. When the tide rolls in,the locals have ways of keeping everyone dry.Cafe owners move tables to higher ground, and hotels pass out high boots to guests.
Still, dealing with the rising water does not give the city's residents a sinking feeling, just ask Erla Zwingle. She has lived in Venice for 17 years."There has always been high water in Venice."Zwingle told WR News."If high water really were a serious problem, people wouldn't be still living here."

11.In the fall of 1985,I was a bright-eyed girl heading off to Howard University,aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere.Twenty-one  years later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.
My grandma,an amazing woman,graduated from college at the age of 65.She was the
first in our family to reach that goal.But one year after I started college,she developed cancer.I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her.It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.
Then I got married with another dream:building my family with a combination of adopted(收 養(yǎng)的) and biological children.In 1999,we adopted our first son.To lay eyes on him was Fantastic and very emotional.A year later came our second adopted boy.Then followed son No.3.In 2003,I gave birth to another boy.
You can imagine how fully occupied I became,raising four boys under the age of 8!Our
home was a complete zoo-a joyous zoo.Not surprising,I never did make it back to college full-time.But I never gave up on the dream either.I had only one choice:to find a way.That meant taking as few as one class each semester.
The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit, but I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.
In 2007,I graduated from the University of North Carolina.It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!
I am not special,just single-minded.It always struck me that when you're looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you're in the midst of it,it just seems normal.Everything you want won't arrive in your life on one day.It's a process.Remember:
little steps add up to big dreams.

3.Successful people in international business understand the cultures of other countries and learn to change their practices in different cultures.They understand the importance of avoiding business decisions based on misconceptions--mistaken ideas.
One cause of misconceptions is ethnocentrism,the belief that one's own culture's way of doing things is better than the way of other cultures.It's ethnocentrism that leads to failure in international business.To avoid ethnocentrism,it's necessary to study the different elements(組成部分) of culture:language,values and attitudes,and customs and manners.
Language
A knowledge of the local language can help international business people in four ways.First,people can communicate directly.Second,people are usually more open in their communication
with someone who speaks their language.Third,an understanding of the language allows people to infer meanings that are not said directly.Finally,knowing the language helps people to understand the culture better.
Values and Attitudes
Values are people's basic beliefs about the difference between right and wrong,good and bad.An attitude is a way of thinking or acting.Values and attitudes influence international business.For
Example, many people in the United States believe that chocolate from Switzerland is better than chocolate from other countries, and they buy a lot of it.
Customs and Manners
Customs are common social practices.Manners are ways of acting that the society believes are polite.For example,in the United States,it is the custom to have salad(色拉) before the main course at dinner,not after.It's not acceptable to talk with food in mouth at table.Failure to understand the customs and manners of other countries will bring difficulty selling their products.Orange juice as a breakfast drink of an American company in France doesn't sell well because the French don't usually drink juice with breakfast.

32.A knowledge of the local language allows international business peopleB.
A.to be more open with their customers
B.to communicate without outside help
C.to express their thoughts indirectly
D.to have a better idea of their own culture
33.The act of many people buying chocolate of Switzerland shows the role ofC.
A.manners  B.values   C.a(chǎn)ttitudes  D.customs
34.What would be the best title for the text?C
A.Misconceptions in Business    B.Basic Beliefs in Business
C.International Business Culture   D.Successful International Business
35.The author's purpose of writing this article is to tell peopleB.
A.how to take a right attitude in business

D.how to act politely and properly in business.
