Georgia was waking up to a new president Monday but it was also getting as its first lady a green?eyed linguist from Holland who has already managed to cast a spell over the little Caucasus nation. Sandra Roelofs is seen by some as the secret weapon which enables her husband Saakashvili to win in this presidential election.

She runs an investment consultancy(投資咨詢公司), speaks six languages and some believe she is the real brains behind her husband’s rise to power.

Roelofs, who is a year younger than her husband, met him in 1993 when he was studying an international law programme in Strasbourg, France. She planed to go from there to Somalis as an aid worker but Saakashvili persuaded her to go with him instead to New York, where he had got a scholarship. They married soon after and when Saakashvili returned to his native Georgia to begin a career in politics, she went with him.

She has enchanted(使人心醉) many of her adopted countrymen. The mention of her name sends women swooning(神魂顛倒), and melts the tough expressions of strong Georgian men.“You can really tell that she cares about people,” says a resident of the capital, Tbilisi.“She runs a hunitarian organization. She is smart and pretty and kind and did you hear the way she speaks Georgian? Perfectly!”

The new first lady’s looks and intelligence play a large part in her appeal. But Georgians are especially taken by her simple manner. She has said that she plans to keep living in the family’s modest flat, even though they have the right to move into a luxurious government residence. “She doesn’t care about fancy houses and cars.” said Malika, a 29?year?old civil servant in Tbilisi.

For many years, no one could communicate with people who had been born without hearing. These deaf people were not able to use a spoken language.

But, beginning in the 1700s, the deaf were taught a special language. Using the language, they could share thoughts and ideas with others. The language they used was a language without sound. It was a sign language.

How did this sign language work? The deaf were taught to make certain movements using their hands, faces and bodies. Their movements stood for things and ideas. A man might move his forefinger across his lips. This meant, “You are not telling the truth.” He might tap his chin with three fingers. This meant, “my uncle.” The deaf were also taught to use a finger alphabet. They used their fingers to make the letters of the alphabet. In this way, they spelled out words. Some deaf people could spell out words at a speed of 130 words per minute.

Sign language and finger spelling are not used as much as they once were. Today the deaf are taught to understand others by watching their lips. They are also taught how to speak.

A. the deaf must have special teachers

B. there is still no way to communicate with the deaf

C. deaf people make signs to make a living

Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.

Recite and repeat in conversation(談話,交往).

When you hear a person’s name, repeat it. Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial(矯揉造作的,不自然的).

Ask the other person to recite and repeat.

You can let other people help you remember their names. After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort(努力) you’re making to learn their names.

Admit you don’t know.

Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say, “I’ m working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?”

Use associations(聯(lián)絡(luò),聯(lián)系).

Link(聯(lián)系) each person you meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note:“Vicki Cheng — tall, black hair.” To reinforce (加強(qiáng)) your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.

Limit the number of new names you learn at one time.

When meeting a group of people, concentrate on(集中精力) remembering just two or three names. Free yourself from remembering everyone. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names. Last names can come later.

Go early.

Consider going early to conferences(會(huì)議), parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up(到場(chǎng)) on time. That’s fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others — an automatic (無(wú)意識(shí)的)review for you.

1...How will most people feel when you try hard to remember their names?

A.They will be moved.

B.They will be annoyed.

A.tell him the truth

B.tell him a white lie

C.a(chǎn)sk him for pity

D.a(chǎn)sk others to help you

3...When you meet a group of people, it is better to remember________.

A.a(chǎn)ll their names

D.a(chǎn)s many names as possible

4...What does the text mainly tell us?
