For many years, I was sure that my suffering was because of my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take old wounds, hurts, and rejections with it.

Many obese(overweight)people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our worst mistake is believing that being thin means being loved, being special, and being cherished. We imagine what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal. We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there.

But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally realize its promise of happiness, and of course, love.

It took me a long while to know that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty standards are different with culture. In Somoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our body? Why not look inside? Many of us try hard to change our body, but with no result. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our body and make friends with and cherish ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves,  the whole world changes.

1.The passage tries to tell us the importance of ______.

A.body size

B.a(chǎn)ttitudes toward life

C.culture difference

D.different beauty standards

2.What does the underlined word “everything” (paragraph 2) mean?

A.All the problems.

B.All the bodies.

C.The whole world.

D.The truth.

3.What can be inferred about the author?

A.The author is a Samoan.

B.The author succeeded in losing weight.

C.The author has been troubled by her/his weight.

D.The author probably got wounded in wars or accidents.

4.According to the author, what is the common view of those who have lost some weight first and gained it back later?

A.They feel angry about the regained weight.

B.They don’t care about the regained weight.

C.They feel optimistic(樂觀的)about future plans on weight control.

D.They think they should give up their future plans on weight control.

第三節(jié):閱讀理解(共20小題,每題2.5分,滿分50分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項中,選出最佳答案

A couple of years ago, I received a $ 600 insurance dividend (保險股息).Sitting at the kitchen table, my wife and I discussed what we might do with the money. I realized now that the refrigerator overheard our talk. The very next day it went wrong. The repairman told us we needed a new unit. Cost:$600. Not long after that, we got a refund(賠償金)from the shop, enough to pay for a trip to Mexico. “I’ve something to tell you,” I said to my wife in a low voice. “How about the living-room?” she suggested. I remembered the color TV set was there. “No, not there. Let’s go out.” I showed her the check as we stood on the driveway. We held each other excitedly and hardly noticed the rain. My car was parked within5 meters. I didn’t think anything about it at the time. As I started for the airport the next day, the car began making strange sounds. Changing the engine cost about $ 1, 000.

Then I looked through our financial records. I discovered that during the last ten years we spent all our “found money” repairing a hot water heater, a television and a stove.

I never mention money in front of our mechanical equipment. But if this article is published and I am paid for, the word processor(文字信息處理機)is going to go for sure. It’ll know.

1. What went wrong first as the writer’s?

   A. The refrigerator          B. The stove

   C. The TV set              D. The engine of the car

2. What has been repaired and still remains all right?

   A. The car                 B. The color TV set

   C. The stove               D. The hot water heater

3. Which statement is wrong according to the passage?

A.There are many pieces of modern equipment in the writer’s home

B.The writer often discusses with his wife on how to spend their money.

C.The writer has gone into a lot of trouble to repair his things

D.The writer’s refrigerator can overhear him

Section C

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

(D)

A. the future of computer-human relationship

B. the programming system of the computer

C. the reason of the complexity of the human brain

D. the possibility of a real supercomputer

E. the way for computers to kill humans

F. the shortages of the computer compared with a human brain

76. ____________________

The difference between a human brain and a computer is more complicated than we can imagine. The large mammalian brain is the most complicated thing, for its size. Though the human brain only weighs three pounds, in that three pounds are ten billion neurons and a hundred billion cells. The many billions of cells are interconnected in such a vastly complicated network that we can’t begin to explore as yet.

77. ____________________

Even the most complicated computer man has yet built can’t compare with the brain.  Computer switches and processes number in the millions rather than in the billions. What’s more, the computer switch is just an on-off device, whereas the brain cell is itself possessed of a complex structure.

78. ____________________

It’s frequently said that computers solve problems only because they are “programmed” to do so. They can only do what men have them do, in which way it is like the human brain. We can also do what we are “programmed” to do. Our genes “program” us the instant the zygote (授精卵) is formed, and our potentialities are limited by that “program.”

79. ____________________

Surely, though, if a computer can be made complex enough, it can be as creative as people.  If it could be made as complex as a human brain, it could be the replacement of a human brain and do whatever a human brain can do. Then the real supercomputer comes along.

80. ____________________

In other words, once we pass a certain critical point, the computers will gain a dominating position and present a complexity explosion. In a very short time thereafter, computers may exist not only taking after the human brain, but far passing it. When the time comes, we might as well step aside and hand over all our work to them and really have them serve us.
