We all know that being grateful and appreciative is very beneficial. 1. Gratitude belongs to the category of advanced life skills because it can completely transform your life.

Help others turn away from negativity. If some people you know persist in talking about negative things all the time, find a wise way to tell them that you really don’t appreciate it. 2.

Look for reasons to say thank you. 3.They’ll be more likely to do nice things for you because you appreciate their efforts. In turn, you’ll have even more reasons to feel gratitude. When other people sense that you appreciate them, it changes your relationship with them.

4.When you find yourself in a difficult situation, look for the beneficial aspects created by that situation. Ask yourself: “What have I learned here? Will it benefit me in the future? When I look back on this experience a year later, what will I be grateful for?”

Have a gratitude review. Do this as soon as you wake up in the morning and before you go to sleep at night. 5. Think of all the things you have to be grateful for in your life. If you start and end each day with gratitude, your whole life will shift in a more positive direction. It only takes a minute or two to allow gratitude fill your heart and mind.

Does handwriting matter? Not very much, according to many educators. However, scientists say it is far too soon to declare handwriting is not important. New evidence suggests that the link between handwriting and educational development is deep.

Children not only learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand, but they are also better able to create ideas and remember information. In other words, it’s not only what we write that matters ---- but how.

A study led by Karin James, a psychologist at Indiana University, gave support to that view. A group of children, who had not learned to read and write, were offered a letter or a shape on a card and asked to copy it in one of three ways: draw the image on a page but with a dotted outline(虛線), draw it on a piece of blank white paper, or type it on a computer. Then the researchers put the children in a brain scanner and showed them the image again.

It was found that when children had drawn a letter freehand without a dotted outline or a computer, the activity in three areas of the brain were increased. These three areas work actively in adults when they read and write. By contrast, children who chose the other two ways showed no such effect. Dr. James attributes the differences to the process of free handwriting: not only must we first plan and take action in a way but we are also likely to produce a result that is variable. Those are not necessary when we have an outline.

It’s time for educators to change their mind and pay more attention to children’s handwriting.

Jennifer Lawrence, 25, is known for being down -to- earth and likable—she ordered McDonald’s on the red carpet at the Oscars.

And when she described her anger and disappointment at the fact that women are not equal to men in Hollywood, Lawrence “continued to make America fall in love with her”, said Business Insider.

Earlier this year, an E-mail from film company Sony Pictures showed that Lawrence and Amy Adams made less money for American Hustle(2013) than their male(男性) co-stars, even though both women played major roles in the movie.

In an article published in Lenny Letter, a popular e-mail newsletter, Lawrence wrote “I’m trying to find the ‘a(chǎn)dorable(可愛的) way to state my opinion and still be likable’!”

Lawrence joins a long list of actresses, including Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett, who have spoken up about Hollywood’s pay gap.

According to Forbes, the 10 highest paid movie actors in 2015, led by Robert Downey Jr, made $431 million. But the 10 highest paid movie actresses, led by Lawrence, only made about $218 million. The pay gap comes partly from the low number of actresses. According to a report in August, only 28.1 percent of characters in 2014’s 100 top grossing(高票房的) films were female(女性) and of them, only 21 percent had a female lead or co-lead character.

“People with more experience are paid more,” Nancy Dubue, the president CEO of A+E Networks, told Variety, “The problem is that the industry still gives too many men that experience.”

The pay gap is a problem that affects the whole US, The White House reported that women earn 78 cents to every dollar a man gets there.

“This is what made Lawrence’s piece powerful: it showed that women still experience pay inequality everywhere-whether you’re Hollywood’s top talent or you work in a retail store,” commented CNN.

As Lawrence points out, it’s not just about less payment for women; it’s also about women making sure that their pay shows their value.

1.According to Business Insider, Americans_____ Lawrence after she expressed her anger at Hollywood’s pay gap.

A. dislike. B. like

C. doubt D. forgive

2.From the passage we can infer that_____.

A. men earn more money for the same job than women because they are better than women

B. Lawrence is the leader of the 10 highest_ paid movie actresses

C. a great many actresses have spoken up about Hollywood’s pay gap

D. a White House report points out that men make twice as much money as women

3.The writer’s purpose of writing this passage is____.

A. to inform

B. to advise

C. to persuade

D. to argue

4.The best title of the passage can be____.

A. More Experience, More Pay

B. Asking for Fair Pay

C. Speaking up for Hollywood

D. Higher value, Higher Pay

In an effort to discourage people from using plastics, scientists have been hard at work inventing alternative packaging products.

The idea of using seaweed(海草) to make eco-friendly water bottles has been around for a few years. Recently, Ari Jonsson took his invention—a water bottle made from red seaweed—to show off at a festival. The bottles will only hold their shape as long as they are filled. As soon as these bottles are empty they will begin to break down, though they would be perfectly safe to eat. Ari Jonsson's bottles are a step closer to a widely used alternative to the current plastic ones.

The eatable water container is not the only product to add to our image of the future. Narayana Pessapaty has also created eatable spoons. After the success of his spoons, Mr. Pessapaty is ready to expand and introduce forks and chopsticks to his menu. His aim is to largely reduce the amount of plastic waste, which is a huge problem for waste sites all over the world, It is a product that may take up t0 500 years to break down, and recycling companies worldwide are struggling to deal with it.

Aside from the obvious benefits to the environment, this new packaging is also cheap to produce and therefore cheap to buy. Even better is the fact that similar eatable cutlery can be made at home, possibly a science project for children or just fun with friends. Why not experiment and create your own recipes?

1.Why do scientists invent alternative packaging products?

A. To make people's life more convenient.

B. To show off their inventive talents.

C. To change the way we picnic outside.

D. They will break down themselves when empty.

3.What do Ari and Narayana's inventions have in common?

A. They are convenient to carry.

B. They are safe to eat.

C. They can be used for a short time.
